Title: Recognizing biology's social structures: are some/most/all billionaires social cheaters? What to do? Presenter Michael Klymkowsky

Brief description: While evolutionary biology is often presented in terms of conflict between organisms, much that goes on involved cooperation. I will talk about the origins of cooperation both between and among species and individuals. When cooperation occurs, there is also the opportunity for cheaters, organisms (or cells) that take a selfish approach. I will consider how organisms and populations protect themselves against such cheaters, with perhaps some implications for our current state of affairs.

Speaker: Mike Klymkowsky is a retired professor of MCD Biology CU Boulder. He has earned degrees from Penn State and Caltech and completed postdoctoral work at University College London and Rockefeller University. His biological research has ranged from neurotransmitter receptor structure to cytoskeletal organization and function, and their roles in embryonic development. With collaborators, he has developed the NSF-supported Biology Concepts Instrument (BCI), a suite of FLASH-based “virtual laboratory” activities, and open education resources (OER), among others. He has won a number of teaching awards over the years, and he writes periodic Substack posts.
