About us
Welcome to Serious Board Gaming.
For people who take their board games seriously.
Meetups will be in locations around Milpitas and San Jose, focusing on old-school, interactive games and trick-taking games. None of this new-age, cozy, hyped multiplayer-solitaire Euro nonsense.
We have too many great older games and not enough people willing (brave?) to embrace them. The idea is to create a tight-knit and consistent group of people willing to try games that are overlooked and under-appreciated.
New to board gaming? That's fine.
Enthusiasm is mandatory; experience is not.
Rules will be taught for each game before we begin.
This is not a casual social meetup group where we spend three hours chatting and then squeeze in a party game. We're here to play games. Preferably good ones. Preferably ones where we're at each others' throats.
Games will be announced and planned in advance.
You'll know what you're signing up for.
No showing up and deciding what to play.
Finally, RSVPs mean something. If you sign up, you show up.
Cancellations require 48 hours' notice.
Games require specific player counts to work optimally.
No-shows and late cancellations will result in a ban.
Yes, we're serious about this.

Let's play Cavum @ Playback Coffee!
Playback Coffee, 87 N San Pedro St, San Jose, CA 95110, San Jose, CA, USCavum is an under-appreciated board game by the great German board game designer duo Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling. The game is an old-school network-building Euro game where players are building a shared underground mining network, rushing to compete for gem veins, piggybacking on opponents' tunnels and using dynamite to blow up parts of the network.
It's an unusually nasty, highly interactive Kramer/Kiesling Euro hiding a brilliant route-building puzzle under an oft-misunderstood ruleset. I'm always happy to prepare beforehand and teach the rules but I'm looking for a dedicated group willing to learn it well and look past its rough edges.
I'm still figuring out the ideal location to host these sessions moving forward. For now, let's meet at Playback Coffee in San Pedro Square. Since this is a small business, let's be sure to support them by buying their coffee etc. and keeping a clean space.
Please be on time and remember the group rules - give me notice at least 48 hours in advance if you need to cancel.
