🗣 NARROW ESCAPES: A StorySlam Competition About Cheating Fate -- Public Works Space

▪︎ The StorySlam competition a few months ago, on the topic of Manners, was a DELIGHT! We heard stories that were funny, poignant, and top-notch, so here's another Moth event. This time, the topic is Narrow Escapes. Expect an evening of captivating tales.

🔆 NARROW ESCAPES: Sit back and enjoy a storytelling competition of true, personal, five-minute stories about cheating fate -- just barely. Dodging disaster by inches, slipping through a closing door, or talking one's way out of a sticky situation. Heart racing, palms sweating, a big sigh of relief. The storytellers will recount the tight squeezes, last-minute maneuvers, and lucky breaks that left them thinking, “that was way too close!”

🔆 Six-time Grammy-winning composer and jazz pianist Billy Childs performs at SFCM in a special concert with Roots, Jazz and American Music faculty and students. This concert also features the world premiere of a musical work by Jordyn Davis, one of the winners of the Emerging Black Composers Project.

🔆 Celebrating their 40th anniversary tour — a k a four decades and 400 million plucks — this seven-piece orchestra began in 1985 as a counterpoint to that era’s mindless pop, with Leeds University students donning black tuxedos and doing shows in tiny rooms above old pubs. They’re still wearing the tuxes but have since traveled the world, engaging audiences from Tasmania to Carnegie Hall with an impressively rich orchestral palette using only ukeleles, their singing voices, and a wee bit of whistling.
