🔆 Bassist, composer, and arranger Marcus Shelby leads his New Orchestra, joined by guest vocalist Tiffany Austin, in a performance of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's Harlem Nutcracker Suite, alongside original arrangements of holiday music and black spirituals. Shelby modeled his ensemble after Ellington's own, making him an ideal interpreter of Ellington and Strayhorn's landmark 1960 jazz reimagining of Tchaikovsky's score. Though largely forgotten today, that original album remains a singular fusion of Tchaikovsky's enduring melodies with the orchestral language of two peerless jazz innovators.
▪︎ Meet at 5:30 sharp at Lers Ros (307 Hayes)
▪︎ PLEASE don't be a no-show. If your plans change, remember to update your RSVP prior to the event.
