Hilda and Jesse has been on a rollercoaster for the past few years, from a backlash due to their refusal to allow firearms into their establishment, which tragically impacted the San Francisco Police Department, but in the end it was sorted. Hilda and Jesse (ABC)

Hilda and Jesse was a foil for San Francisco Chronicle's Restaurant Critic MacKenzie Chung Fegan in their war against Tasting Menus, especially those lower priced also found at (San Francisco Foodie Favorites 7 Adams, Azalina’s and Mijoté). Dear Ms. Fegan Queer Icon Pee-Wee Herman's Playhouse had a different color scheme.

And I was not surprised when Michelin awarded them a star in 2024 (and again for 2025).

I read many reviews, I taste many menus. Hilda and Jesse is just the best Brunch in San Francisco.

Only accepting people who did not cancel at the last minute on my events during 2025, Let's begin 2026 with the best.

Minutiae
Hilda and Jesse is renown for their Buttermilk Pancakes and Avocado Toast (bread is substituted with a sweet potato tempera crisp). Some menu items had me ponder how anyone would consider making combining those flavors, textures in such a beautiful package. Hilda and Jesse is not micro gastronomy, but each dish fills you with wonder. Excellent execution, probably no one else would think of these combinations and few match their creation.

Started as a pop up in 2020 Breakfast for Dinner, Hilda and Jesse opened in 2021 at their current North Beach location.

From the Michelin website: Offering what may well be the Bay Area’s most creative and ambitious take on brunch, this disarming passion project from co-owners Ollie Liedags and Rachel Sillcocks gets its extra shine from the pair’s extensive fine dining experience—each also contributed a grandparent for the restaurant’s name. The hospitality is cheery and warm, matched by a winsome space that calls to mind a modernist diner, and happily the cuisine is every bit as finely tuned. There is nothing precious or manicured about the cooking here. It is often bold and brash, a total riot of flavors mixed with stellar ingredients, and dishes are equal parts unexpected and undeniably satisfying. At dinner, find a rotating, seasonal multicourse menu with a few optional add-ons.

Estimated Cost: Their Surprise Prix Fixe Five Course is 95$ a la carte and add-ons are about $20 each, see their menu for details. Alcohol can raise these estimates significantly.

Taxes and Restaurant Fees
Dining in San Francisco has a sales tax (8.625%) and probably an employee health mandate (3-10%), a tip (20%) may be automatically added, even on individual bills, if not we expect a 20% minimum tip to be paid for individual bills. We will try to get separate checks, but remember to bring cash.

Each diner is responsible for their own orders and costs but we will have to consolidate and divvy up the final bill accordingly.
