Humanism and Psychology

Details

Join us for a discussion on the intersection of humanism and psychology. Humanism is a philosophy that relies on reason and science for understanding of the universe, including ourselves. Psychology has played a role in the human effort to understanding the workings of our minds but, until quite recently, without much success.

Pre-requisite for the discussion is taking 2 free online courses produced by The Humanist Institute ( http://cohe.humanistinstitute.org/free-courses/psychology-humanism/ ). Both courses can be completed in about 2 hours. The first course covers the basics of scientific psychology, what alternative approaches have been used to try to understand human psychology, and why scientific methods have proven best. The second course examines scientific psychology in greater depth, and explores how we can begin applying this knowledge to gain even greater self-understanding and success in life.

We will gather at the home of Jim Barnett in the Upper Market area of San Francisco to discuss the courses on October 21 at 3 PM. Details will be provided for those who RSVP for this discussion.
