You Can’t Prove a Negative, Can You?
Details
Join us this Sunday, either in person or online, as we discuss “You Can’t Prove a Negative, Can You?”
We will have Werner Haag talking about this and taking questions:
Abstract: A common assertion when discussing religious labels is that one can’t prove a negative, and therefore one can’t prove 100% that no gods exists. Of course, one can’t look in every corner of the universe to be sure no gods are lurking there, so one can never be completely sure, and every self-respecting scientist must be open to changing their position if new evidence for a god suddenly appeared. This conclusion often makes non-believers concede that they must call themselves agnostic instead atheist, even if they don’t really believe in any god. Werner will discuss in what circumstances one CAN prove a negative, and what this means for religious labels.
Speaker biography: Werner Haag, Ph.D.: He has been a member of ACSJ (Atheist Community of San Jose) since 2013 and is the current President. He has a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry with 10 years experience in fundamental research and 35 years in applied chemistry. He recently retired from work and coaching high school wrestling, but still enjoys orienteering, ballroom dancing, traveling and reading about the history of science and religion. He is also a Vice President of the Humanist Mutual Aid Network (HuMAN), working with Hank Pellesier to fund atheist and humanist charities in developing countries.
