What we're about

Shut Up & Write!™ is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format
It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.
Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!™ format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

Shut Up & Write!™ Ohio City

Bookhouse Brewing

This location may be convenient for downtowners and westenders alike. The brewery encourages writers and readers alike. You may bring your own food. Occasionally, Mary Kate will host these Wed night groups. If you spot her, say hi! • WHAT WE'LL DO: Join us for an hour (or two) of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write (rather than talk) with other writers. See if it’s true for you from 7-9pm on Thursday nights. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking or talking about writing, come and get some real writing done! • SCHEDULE: 7-7:10 - SESSION 1: quick intros and setting hourly goals. 7:10: write WITHOUT TALKING for 50 min. 8:00 - SESSION 2: (intros for new folks; take off if you want to; goal updates) set second hourly goal. 8:10 (the end) write WITHOUT TALKING for 50 min. 9:00 pack up (or keep rolling - brewery closes at 10pm). • DON'T TALK: Writing requires not talking. Of course, connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing! Join us on the Third Thursday at the Bottlehouse Brewery to talk (sign up on our meetup page). Otherwise, if you must talk during our writing sessions please seat yourself away from writers and rejoin us when you're ready to silently write. • BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get seated without disturbing writers. We will do greetings/intros at the top of the hour. If you arrive early, please silently make room for friendly latecomers. • WHAT TO BRING - Whatever you need to be able to write! - Headphones/earplugs are recommended to block the cafe’s music and customer conversation. - Layered clothing is useful because cafe temperature can be unpredictable. - Your adapters (plenty of outlets near most seating areas). • IMPORTANT TO KNOW ACCESSIBILITY: there is one step to enter the front of the building but once inside, there is a ramp that leads to the main bar area. MASS TRANSIT: Walk from W.25-Ohio City Station, walk NW toward Loraine Ave. Turn LT onto Lorain and walk 486 ft. Turn RT onto W 25th St. Pass by Family Dollar on LT and destination will be on the LT. Or from W.25 & Lorain Av, take bus 51B Metro Health Line to Public Square direction 4 stops and get off at W 25th & Detroit Av. Continue walking in same direction 2 min to Bookhouse Brewing across the street. FREE PARKING: Brewery has an 18-car spot lot just north of the brewery at W 25th and Church Ave (look for the mural). Once that lot is full, there is street parking available on W 25th and Church Ave. NO SHOWS: Three "no shows" deletes your membership from this group so please sign up only if you know you can make it and cancel well in advance so that organizers can help manage the meetup.
