What we're about

For more virtual events, join our Online Events Meetup here: https://www.meetup.com/shutupandwriteonlineevents/

Shut Up & Write!® is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format

It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.

Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!® format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

Sunday Brunch Shut Up & Write on Zoom (10-12noon EDT)

Online event

We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with others, even if we’re all just hanging out online together. See if it’s true for you at late morning on Sundays. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. SCHEDULE: (based on US Eastern Daylight Time, GMT/UTC - 4) 9:55am - SET UP: You can sign up through your browser (zoom.us) or download the app. You may get better signal by accessing Zoom through your phone signal but you can use any device that has A/V and wifi. Log into the meeting with the Zoom link that appeared after you signed up for this meetup. At the Zoom site, make sure to enter your name before joining the meeting. You will be sent to a waiting room for the host to bring you into the meeting. Adjust your camera angle and in/out sound. If you sign in on multiple devices but make sure only ONE device has mic on. You can hide your unsightly background by clicking on the up arrow next to the video icon and choose a "virtual background." 10-10:10 - SESSION 1: We will go around and give quick self intros alongside our writing goals for the session. Ask the host to screen share writing prompts if you'd like. 10:10: turn off your mics and write for 50 min. Use that Chat message box for silent communication privately with one person or with everyone. Do not save your work in chat - it will be deleted when Zoom closes. 11:00 - SESSION 2: chat byes and leave OR share your goal updates for another round of silent writing (approximately 50 min). 12:00pm: wrap up and goodbyes OR stick around to talk about your writing, resources, etc. The host may or may not participate in the post-session chat but will keep the zoom room open if folks want to stick around afterwards to chat. WHAT DO I NEED? A computer with working camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and optionally, headphones. OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS: Technical difficulties are part and parcel of getting together online. If you’ve never used your computer for an online meeting, take a few minutes before we meet to familiarize yourself with how to use Zoom by reviewing the below tutorial: [ZOOM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VebiA5pGq0] If you run into technical issues, remember that this is the time you’ve carved out for yourself and your writing. Shut Up & Write!™ Cleveland Heights

3077 Mayfield Rd

Our midday Sunday group is back to the location that used to be Daylight Donuts. It is now Fawaky Burst - a fresh juice shop and Mary Kate is our host. We meet midday Sundays from 11:30-1:30 at 3077 Mayfield Rd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118. Free parking in the front lot. Big car shop lot in the back may also be used because Motorcars is the landlord to this shop. • WHAT WE'LL DO: Join us for an hour (or two) of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write (rather than talk) with other writers. See if it’s true for you from 11:30am to 1:30pm on Sundays. All skill levels, all types of writing welcome! No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking or talking about writing, come and get some real writing done! • SCHEDULE: 11:30-11:40am - SESSION 1: quick intros and setting hourly goals. Check in with Mary Kate, your host, and then sit next to a fellow writer! 11:40: write WITHOUT TALKING for 50 min. 12:30 - SESSION 2: intros for new folks; take off if you want to; goal updates. 12:40 (to the end) write WITHOUT TALKING for 50 min. 1:30pm: pack up or keep rolling. • DON'T TALK: Writing requires not talking. Of course, connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing! If you must talk during our writing sessions please step away from writers and rejoin us when you're ready to silently write. • BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get seated without disturbing writers. We will do greetings/intros at the top of the hour. If you arrive early, please silently make room for friendly latecomers. • BUY SOMETHING: Fawaky does not charge us for using their space and our meetup is also free. Please be a good patron and buy something so that our host continues to welcome us. They have a great vegan menu and the cheapest coffee in town! • WHAT TO BRING - Whatever you need to be able to write! - Headphones/earplugs are recommended to block the music and customer conversation. - Layered clothing is useful because cafe temperature can be unpredictable. - Electrical outlets underneath the bar and wall seating. Come early to find a good seat if you need to charge your devices. • IMPORTANT TO KNOW TRAVEL / PARKING: Lots of metered parking behind shops. RESTROOMS: door right next to the entrance and at the end of the long hall. ACCESSIBILITY: This is not a wheelchair accessible building. There is one step to get into the building. WARNING FOR NO SHOWS: We want to keep this group free which means three "no shows" deletes your membership from this group!
