What we're about

Shut Up & Write!™ is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format

It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.
Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!™ format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

The Digital World: Shut Up & Write!™ Online

Online event

Together we are strong. Together we are powerful force of creativity. Together we bring out the best in each other. Find a comfortable spot in your snuggly clothes and get ready for an hour of silent writing together. At this time, our writing group will remain online for the remainder of 2020. THE GOOD STUFF: We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with others, even if we’re all just hanging out online together. See if it’s true for you at 6PM (CT) on Friday evenings! Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. And don’t worry, no one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. ONLINE SCHEDULE: 6:00pm (CT) - Get settled, quick intros and Connection Maker. 6:30pm (CT) - Timer starts: write for 1 hour. 7:30pm (CT) - (The End) chat / sign-off / keep writing. UPDATES GUIDELINES (Please read): The rules of our world have changed and I am changing with them. I will be implementing a few steps to ensure the safety of our magnificent group of writers. 1. Please select a Zoom name that is similar to the name listed on Meet-Up. This will reduce your wait time to enter the writing room and make my life much easier. 2. The Zoom link and password to our group will be emailed to whatever email that is associated with your Meet-Up account at least 30 minutes prior to the start of our group. 3. Our RSVPs will close one hour prior to the start of our group. 5. Please, please update your RSVP if you are unable to attend. This will allow our writers on the waitlist to attend. Thank you all for your patience and understanding in this new digital world. I have no doubt that we will find our new groove very soon. WHAT DO I NEED? A computer with working camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and optionally, headphones. OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS: Technical difficulties are part and parcel of getting together online. If you’ve never used your computer for an online meeting, take a few minutes before we meet to familiarize yourself with how to use Zoom by reviewing the below tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VebiA5pGq0 If you run into technical issues, remember that this is the time you’ve carved out for yourself and your writing. Whether or not you were able to join our online meet-up, go ahead and get your writing started, then leave a comment below to let us know how it went for you. Thank you all for your support, understanding, and positive creative energy. I'll see you in the writing room this Friday. Happy Writing!
