What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

The Digital World: Shut Up & Write!™ Online

Link visible for attendees

Together we are strong. Together we are powerful force of creativity. Together we bring out the best in each other. Find a comfortable spot in your snuggly clothes and get ready for an hour of silent writing together.

At this time, our writing group will remain online for as along as we remain online. Helpful, isn't it?

THE GOOD STUFF:
We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with others, even if we’re all just hanging out online together. See if it’s true for you at 6PM (CT) on Friday evenings!

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. And don’t worry, no one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice.

ONLINE SCHEDULE:
6:00pm (CT) - Get settled, quick intros and Connection Maker.
6:15pm (CT) - Timer starts: write for 1 hour.
7:15pm (CT) - (The End) chat / sign-off / keep writing.

UPDATED GUIDELINES (3/18/22):
The rules of our world have changed and I am changing with them. I will be implementing a few steps to ensure the safety of our magnificent group of writers.

  1. Please select a Zoom name that is similar to the name listed on Meet-Up. This will reduce your wait time to enter the writing room and make my life much easier.
  2. Our RSVPs will close one hour prior to the start of our group.
  3. The link to the meeting will be emailed via MeetUp to attendees prior to start time. Double check your profile to make sure you've enabled email notifications. You can find it under your profile > Settings > Email Updates > updates about your groups.
  4. Please, please update your RSVP if you are unable to attend. This will allow our writers on the waitlist to attend.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding in this new digital world. I have no doubt that we will find our new groove very soon.

WHAT DO I NEED?
A computer with working camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and optionally, headphones.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:

Technical difficulties are part and parcel of getting together online.

If you’ve never used your computer for an online meeting, take a few minutes before we meet to familiarize yourself with how to use Zoom by reviewing the below tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VebiA5pGq0

If you run into technical issues, remember that this is the time you’ve carved out for yourself and your writing. Whether or not you were able to join our online meet-up, go ahead and get your writing started, then leave a comment below to let us know how it went for you.

Thank you all for your support, understanding, and positive creative energy. I'll see you in the writing room this Friday.

Happy Writing!

Shut Up & Write!®: In-Person Writing Group (Arlington, TX)

Inclusion Coffee

Join us for an hour of in-person writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 9:00 am on Saturday mornings.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem, or just plain work stuff -- you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

Location:
Inclusion Coffee, 101 E. Abram St. #110, Arlington, 76010
*We'll try to gather in one of the meeting rooms. Check the comment section right before the meeting for spot specifics -- or just look for the Shut Up & Write! sign when you arrive.

Schedule:
9:00 - Quick introductions (name and briefly what you're working on)
9:15 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
10:15 - The end: chat, take off, or keep writing
*you may want to arrive a little early to get your caffeine and nom-nom requirements settled before we begin.

Optional Socializing happens at 10:20-ish. Writing can be very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is an awesome thing.

Being late is okay: just show up and get settled, then check in with me after the session (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write.
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons.
There are sporadic outlets throughout the coffee shop, but you may want to be charged up just in case.

Other Important Details:
WiFi: Inclusion Coffee has free WiFi - no password required.
Parking: There is free parking all along the city streets (Mesquite, Abrams, and Center being the closest.) There is a free parking garage on Center Street between Division and Abrams -- just avoid the reserved spots.
Seating: There is ample seating, if our area fills up or isn't available, we can spread out for writing and then gather again for socials after.
Food/Drinks: Inclusion has a huge variety of yummy coffees and teas, and a selection of baked goods. Please support our local & awesome business owners by purchasing something.
Etiquette: If possible, please have cell phones on silent/vibrate mode. If you need to take/make a call, please momentarily excuse yourself from the writing group before doing so.

Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at Inclusion Coffee!

Shut Up & Write with Jalyn

Online event

Some are motivated by personal desire while others do just as well with guilt, fear of shame, and a sense of obligation. Of course, I lean towards the latter.

Shut Up & Write hosts in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. However, we welcome anyone in need of a quiet, shared space to work with others. This includes writers, students, artists, etc. As long as you're willing to be respectful, encourage others, and put in the work, you're welcome!

Join us at 8:00 pm CST Wednesday nights.

Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. And don’t worry, no one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice.

SCHEDULE:
8:00 - Quick introductions
8:15 - Writing Session
9:15 - Chat and Wrap Up
9:30 - We're Done!

WHAT DO I NEED?
A computer with working camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and optionally, headphones.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:
Feel free to drop in and drop out when necessary. We don't require your camera to be on during the writing session, but we do ask that you introduce yourself with the camera turned on. Since we're in the online world, it's always nice to link a face to a writing buddy!

We'll be using Google Meet for online sessions. The link will be posted and available prior to the meeting start time for all attendees.

If you’ve never used your computer for an online meeting, take a few minutes before we meet to familiarize yourself with how to use Google Meet by reviewing the below tutorial:
