What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write!® hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write!® H St NE D.C.

Solid State Books

(If anyone would be interested in hosting another monthly, in-person meeting of SUAW in D.C., please send me a message. Thanks!)

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it can be really helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 6pm on the first Monday evening of every month at Solid State Books on H St NE in D.C.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

NOTE: There are only 10 spaces available at the table. RSVPs are capped at 10, so please RSVP, and if you find you will not be able to make it after all, take the time to cancel your reservation so someone else can come off the waitlist to take your spot.

SCHEDULE:
6:00pm - Show up, say hello, have a seat at the big table and start writing. Take off whenever you need to--just try not to disturb the folks still writing.
7:00pm - (The End) chat/take off/keep writing (Solid State Books closes at 9pm)

OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 7:00pm. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

BEING LATE IS OKAY: Just show up, get settled and start writing. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the store’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Please come with laptops or other electronic writing devices pre-charged if you plan to use them.

Other Important Details:

TRAVEL/PARKING: Solid State Books is located at 600 H Street NE, next door to the Fancy Radish in the Apollo building. It is an approximately 10-15 minute walk from Union Station and accessible by several bus lines and the DC Streetcar. Parking is available on nearby streets.

SEATING INFORMATION: We will gather at the large table to the right of the front door. Look for the Shut Up & Write! table sign.

WIFI: readmore!

Please thank our hosts at Solid State Books by purchasing something while you are there. In addition to books, they also have a coffee bar that serves a delicious selection of pastries, snacks, beer, and wine.
