What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write!® in Koreatown

Cafe Loft

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 11:30 AM on SATURDAY MORNING.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

SCHEDULE:
11:30 - Quick introductions
11:45 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
12:45 - The End: chat, take off, or keep writing

OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 1:00 PM. Writing is very solitary. Connecting and sometimes even commiserating with other writers is a cool thing.

BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check in with me after the session. I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at LOFT CAFE!

What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. LOFT Cafe has wi-fi and it is very reliable but there is a shortage of outlets (nothing is perfect :-)) If you will be using your laptop, please make sure is fully charged, a tidbit of information that I wish someone would have shared with me before :-)

Other Important Details:
LOFT Cafe offers Wi-Fi, it has available designated parking spaces on the lot next door (please make sure you park on the correct spaces), and there is street parking but it is Koreatown and is busy, the Western-Wilshire Metro and several bus stops are one block away.
TRAVEL / PARKING: Please see above
SEATING INFORMATION: There is outdoor seating available if you are more comfortable with that, please let me know in your comments, and there is upstairs and downstairs seating. By experience upstairs provides more privacy, but let me know your preference and I will reserve that section.
GUIDELINES: The Cafe provides extensive coffee drinks (caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks) and small pastries. Please thank our hosts by purchasing something.

Shut Up & Write!™ West LA

The Coffee Connection

Join us for ninety minutes of uninterrupted writing!

Whatever you're working on, come do it at the Coffee Connection, alongside other likeminded writers. We'll be at the big table in the back room, past the courtyard. We start at 10:00 sharp, so try to come a few minutes early to grab a treat from the cafe counter and get settled. We stop at 11:30, and then we invite everyone to share (if they want) a few sentences, without any intro or explanation. After that, we're open for any kind of writerly questions, discussions, sharing of struggles or successes.

Please bring $1 - the cafe charges us a minimal fee for reserving the table, and we appreciate your contribution.

SCHEDULE:
9:45 - Intros / Greetings / Get Settled
10:00 - Timer starts: write for 90 minutes
11:30 - Share some sentences if you want, chat, take off or, if you're on a roll, stay for a while and continue to write.

BEING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY IS OKAY, no need to apologize or explain.

WiFi available

There is a parking lot for The Coffee Connection at the corner of Venice and Centinela. There is also street parking.

Please support our hosts by making a purchase. Everything is yummy.
