Shut Up & Write!™ is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format
It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.

Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!™ format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write!™ Montavilla

Gregory Heights Library

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 6PM on Monday Evenings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: Every Monday from 6PM to 7:15PM 6:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 6:15 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 7:15 - (the end) chat / take off / keep writing. Gregory Heights closes at 8PM. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 7:15. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. No plugs where we are sitting, so come with your devices charged. Other Important Details: Gregory Heights Library has WiFi. SEATING INFORMATION: There are two tables in the back of the library where we can sit. GUIDELINES: You can bring food and drinks but please only bring bottles so you do not spill.

Neighbour's Table

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10 AM on Wednesday Mornings! Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 9:45 AM - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10 AM - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:00 AM - chat / take off / keep writing. Neighbour’s Table closes at 12:30. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens from 9:45 to 10 and after 11. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) Whatever you need to be able to write! Neighbour’s Table is normally calm, but they sometimes show soccer or other sports on their TV. But there’s room to set-up outside of the sightline for the TV. Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. While there are outlets, coming with your laptop charged makes the most sense. Other Important Details: Neighbour’s Table has wifi (ask the barista for the login info). TRAVEL / PARKING: Neighbour’s Table has a free parking lot on the corner of NE 29th and Flanders. They’re also one block off of the #19 bus (stop: NE 28th and NE Glisan) and about five blocks from the #20 (stop: East Burnside and 28th). GUIDELINES: Neighbour’s Table offers coffee drinks, tea, breakfast sandwiches, and bagels. Please thank our hosts by purchasing something. Please note this coffee shop is located inside a church with its own entrance on NE Flanders. The church and coffee shop do not discriminate due to race, sexuality, gender, etc, and the coffee shop strives to create a welcome venue for all. This writing group does not support any particular religion and respects everyone's individual beliefs, and the organizer is not affiliated with the church in any capacity. Nectar Cafe

Arrive any time between 7:45 & 8:00am and join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it's true for you! Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. *Please note: According to "Yelp", the noise level at this venue is "average", so if you think background noise may be a distraction for you, please remember to bring ear buds/ear plugs. IMPORTANT: The host of this meetup has a varying work schedule, so please pay careful attention to the calendar to see which day the event will fall on each week. Arrive any time between 7:45 & 8:00AM. 7:45 - Intros. Great time to get your food or drink before we begin writing. 8:00 - Timer starts. Write individually for 1 hour. 9:00 - (the end) Chat / Take off / Keep writing. This venue closes at 8:00PM. SEATING: 4 GUIDELINES: This venue has plenty of coffee drinks, teas and other beverages. They also have, of course, a variety of desserts as well as meals. Please thank our hosts by purchasing something. This supports the business where we have our writing group and keeps a good rapport with the cafe. • This venue DOES have free WiFi, plus electrical outlets for charging computer. • Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block any background noise/music in cafe. TRAVEL / PARKING: Private parking lot for customers; also, free parking on side streets. Several bus/MAX lines stop near this venue, at Hollywood Transit Center (less than 1/2 mile from venue). OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 7:45-8:00am. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. NO SHOWS: People who RSVP "YES" but do not change it to a "NO" if they decide not to come, may be placed on "CAN'T GO" List in the future, so others on RSVP list can come first. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 2:15 PM - SESSION 1: quick intros. 2:30 PM - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 3:30 PM - chat / take off / keep writing. Natian closes at 10 PM. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens from 2:15 to 2:30, and after 3:30. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. Whatever you need to be able to write! Natian’s taproom will play music in the background, but it’s not particularly loud. Bring headphones if you’ll find noise and (potentially) the conversations of customers distracting. Please come with your laptop charged and the organizer will update this listing with plug-in information soon. Other Important Details: TRAVEL / PARKING: Buses #12, #20 stop less than 150 feet from Natian Brewing (you’ll want the stop at East Burnside and Sandy—use the trip planner on Trimet.org for your best mass transit route). Natian doesn’t have a parking lot, but there’s street parking in the area. GUIDELINES: Natian Brewing offers a selection of beers on tap, plus cans of hard cider and nonalcoholic drinks, and bags of chips. Please support them by buying something.
