What we're about

Shut Up & Write!™ is more than a movement, more than a good idea. We’re a method of writing that delivers. As an international organization, we are thousands of writers in a worldwide community, but most importantly, we are writers who write together in a local cafe. Join us.

We have events every week, all over. Sometimes we talk after. Whatever you’re writing, whatever form it takes, wherever you are in your process, you won’t be the only one.

And if you need help with your writing, we offer that too.

Meetup Event Format
It is an empowering and rewarding experience to write an hour each week, at the same time and place. It serves as powerful support for building your daily writing discipline.

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled. At the Meetup our Organizer will lead introductions and then everyone will sit down and write.

Afterwards, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. The Shut Up & Write!™ format brings a social facet to a normally isolated craft.

Our Meetups are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.“ - Gloria Steinem

This is your time to write.

Shut Up & Write!™ @ Thousand Oaks Public Library

Thousand Oaks Library

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:15pm - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:30 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:30 - (the end) chat / take off / keep writing. Library closes at 6:00pm. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens after the one hour writing session. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at the central library. What Should I Bring? Whatever you need to be able to write! Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block any overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Your laptop may have to be pre-charged as there are limited plugs or sometimes none available. Other Important Details: Library has WiFi. Look for the green water bottle and backpack on the table. I will be working on a laptop computer.

Write @ Copal

Copal Comida Mexicana

Join us for an hour of writing! I am trying a new location. It looks nice in the photo and I think it may be quiet at this time of day. Bring headphones so you can listen to music in the event that it is busy. Plenty of tables to choose to sit and work. I invite anyone who may want to join me and we can all work on writing our individual stories. Look for the green backpack and green water bottle on the table. I will be either writing on paper or drawing illustrations for my story on a laptop. We will meet, have some brief introductions about ourselves, or share developments on our story, and then work uninterrupted for a set time. See you there. SCHEDULE: 6:00pm - SESSION 1: quick intros. 6:15 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 7:15 - (the end) chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens after the one hour writing session.
