What we’re about
Shut Up & Write! is a global community that empowers writers to overcome procrastination, silence their inner critic, and make consistent progress on their projects. Our events provide a structured and focused environment where writers can come together, set aside distractions, and achieve their writing goals.
What to Expect
Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress. Once you arrive, our host will lead introductions, and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time. Afterward, we’ll have an optional time to chat and get to know each other. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

- **ONLINE** Shut Up & Write!™ Ballard - **ONLINE**Link visible for attendees
Since mid-August 2020, the chapter of Shut Up & Write based in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle has become national (and even international!) in its online incarnation. Our members continue to find it motivating and helpful, and we’re excited to welcome you to write with us. And so . . .
Join us at 9:30am (Pacific time) on Monday mornings for TWO hours of writing!
Whether it’s a book, blog, script, essay, story, dissertation, resume, melody, poem, screenplay or just plain work stuff, you are invited. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about it, come and get some real writing done.
Please reach out to me at dgurcaymorris [at] gmail [dot] com with any questions or suggestions.
9:30 a.m. ................ Brief check-ins to share goals for the session
9:35 ........................ Timer starts: write for 50 minutes
10:25 ...................... Short break
10:35 ...................... Timer starts: write for 50 minutes
11:25–11:30 .......... The end: chat / take off / keep writing
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens during the break and at 10:25. Though writing tends to be solitary, connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers often provides welcome levity.
BEING LATE IS OKAY, but . . . please sign in and enter the room without interrupting others if we’re in the midst of a 50-minute writing session.
LEAVING EARLY IS OKAY, but . . . wait for the break if you can; otherwise, please exit the room without interrupting others if we’re in the midst of a 50-minute writing session. A quick note in chat saying goodbye is always welcome, though!
What should I have handy?
Whatever you need to write :)

- West Seattle Shut Up & WriteBeveridge Place Pub, Seattle, WA
Please join other writers for West Seattle's Shut Up & Write!
Big thanks to Brooke for hosting!
Please consider cohosting if you'd like to ensure that this group persists, I have some health challenges so I will not be able to host as frequently as I'd like.
Beveridge Place Pub can be noisy - bring headphones if needed. They are not willing to change music type, sometimes they will lower the music. This is one of the few locations that has comfortable ergonomics for writing and is open late. They are super nice in letting us use their space!
ABOUT THE EVENT
No restrictions on genre, length, or writing stage, and NO readings or critique, just an hour of writing.
We will have MUCH shorter intros: first name + genre ONLY.
This group is focused on WRITING. If you'd like to stay afterward to discuss and network, please do so. While we recognize that writing can bring up a lot of deep feelings, no trauma dumping. Please don't disturb the group if you show up late, just sit down and start writing.
Here's the schedule:
7:00 - 7:15 VERY quick intros: name, genre (non-fiction, screenplay, fiction, journaling, etc) - DON'T get into details of why you're writing there will be time for that afterward
7:15 - 8:15 Shut Up and Write!
8:15 Come back, and check in to see how we did. We will go around the table and limit people to 3 minutes TOPS so everyone gets a chance and can leave after presenting if they want to. Please be self-aware and if you go over the 3-minute time, we will move on to the next person. For those who are not self-aware and as a result, negatively affecting the experience of the group, this won't be the right group for you.
