What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write Vancouver [In Person]

Vancouver Public Library, Central Library

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, poem, or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. This is about carving out quiet time for yourself and your ideas. After writing for a couple of hours, we chat and connect. There is no reading or critique, just an accepting, supportive, and judgment-free community of writers of all levels.
[VPL Central - 8th Floor - Pat Graham Reading Room]

SCHEDULE:
10:15 am – Start Writing (Don't worry about being late, this is your time)
12:00pm – Group Chat [Optional]
At social time, we typically discuss writing challenges and connect as a community on relevant topics of the day. You're free to chime in or just sit and listen.
Happy writing and I'll see you on Saturday!

Shut Up & Write!® Marpole in South Vancouver

Historic Joy Kogawa House

Join us as we write together! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you between 6 and 8pm on Tuesday evenings.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

SCHEDULE:
6:00 - Quick introductions
6:05 - Timer starts: write for 55 minutes
7:00 - Stretch and chat with refreshments
7:15 - Timer starts again: write for another 40 minutes
7:55 - Questions and conversation
8:00 - The End: chat and sign off

OUR METHOD:
Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

BEING LATE IS OKAY:
Just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
If you bring a laptop, you may also bring along a charger. When we meet in-person, we gather around a large dining table set in the bright sunroom at the front of the historic house. We have two outlets adjacent to the writing table, if you need to plug in your laptop.

Other Important Details:
TRAVEL / PARKING:
Historic Joy Kogawa House is located two blocks east of Granville Street on West 64th Avenue. Take the 10 Granville bus from downtown or from Canada Line Marine Gateway station. Free parking is available on West 64th Avenue in front of the house and also around the corner on Cartier Street.

REFRESHMENTS:
Bring along a snack to share. We'll provide tea and coffee.

ALSO ON ZOOM:
We also host writers online on Zoom at the same time as writers gather in-person at Historic Joy Kogawa House. Email [masked] for the Zoom link.

Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at Historic Joy Kogawa House, 1450 West 64th Avenue, Vancouver!
