About us
Side by Side is a local-but-international creative community formed of artists, writers, academics, filmmakers and creatives that call the greater Tokyo area their home.
We gather to make together, in-person in Tokyo. We aim to empower each other to overcome creative blocks and procrastination, silence the feelings of "not good enough" and make steady strides in our projects. The structured enviornment of our events becomes a model that people take away with them to make progress between sessions as well.
Our events are often sessions of making sandwiched by socialising. In our weekly writing sessions, we follow the Shut Up & Write methodology: writing or making for a focussed period of time in silence together. Our events are a safe space to work on your craft. No one will read, critique or judge what you make.
All our events are free or not-for-profit.

Write Separately but Together in Tomigaya

Join us in person for 90 minutes of productive writing at Letterpress Letters Café in Tomigaya, an unassuming neighbourhood on the edge of Shibuya and the University of Tokyo's Komaba Campus, where there's an air of something special going on.
This is one such place: a working underground print studio-shop with a café.
We find it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers, in silence together (the Shut Up & Write methodology). See if it’s true for you from 08:30-10:30 on Thursday morning.
Whether you're working on a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem, or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.LOCATION

10:30 Wrap up: Tell us how your writing went, chat, leave, or continue writingOptional socializing happens at the beginning and end of the session. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
Being late is okay. Just show up and get settled – we'll be inside the front door – then check in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the lanyard badge.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to listen to your own music or block out background noise or music playing in the cafe.
If you're writing on your laptop, be sure it's fully charged, as there's no guarantee you'll have an outlet nearby (at the discretion of café staff).The café does not have free wi-fi, I will provide internet via tethering. Please refrain from downloading, uploading and/or streaming large, high quality content.
Please be prepared to order a beverage and/or snack to thank our hosts and support an independent business. Order at the counter once you pick your seat. Please let me know if this is an issue.OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS
While the venue itself is accessible, the restroom is up one flight of stairs on the mezzanine level.
We will consolidate in 2–3 tables on one side of the space in order to allow the flow of regular customers and takeaway orders.The space has one type of seating (backed wooden chairs) and desk-height tables. If you have specific accommodating do let me know and we can figure something out.
Parking can be tight and/or expensive here, so consider other options than driving. Bike parking is available on the street in the segregated bike lane.Happy writing, and I look forward to seeing you there on Thursday morning.
