INTRODUCTION
The Selantai and Pulau Mawar hike in Mersing, Johor is a scenic coastal trail known for its dramatic rock formations, clear blue waters, and quiet, untouched beaches. The route passes through coastal shrubs, sandy stretches, and rocky outcrops before reaching the iconic “Heaven’s Gate (天堂之门)” rocks at Pulau Mawar—one of the area’s most photogenic spots. It’s an easy-to-moderate hike suitable for beginners, offering beautiful sunrise views and a peaceful, nature-rich escape by the sea.

People flock to Pulau Mawar undoubtedly for the Heaven’s Gate view – a huge rock arch that opens to the view of the South China Sea. In Malay, it is also known as Gerbang Laut or in Chinese, “天堂之门”, which means “Door to Heaven”. Don’t be deceived by the photo; the actual rock arch is a lot bigger than it looks.

Pulau Mawar is located at the tip of Pantai Mawar beach, just a 30-minute drive north of Mersing Town/Jetty. Many years ago, it was indeed an island separated by a small strait from the mainland. However, after years of alternating high and low tides, a sandbank forms, connecting Pantai Mawar to Pulau Mawar. So, it is not a Pulau, an island anymore – totally accessible on foot!

Bukit Selantai is a short but rewarding coastal hill hike known for its sweeping sea views and peaceful natural setting. The trail climbs gently through light forest and rocky terrain before opening up to panoramic vistas of the coastline, offshore islands, and turquoise waters. Suitable for beginners with a moderate fitness level.

Local breakfast - offers a variety of stalls with local Malaysian eats — similar to other food courts in Kota Tinggi.

Dinner: We will explore Century Street Food Court as it is Full of Choices. This is a Relatively New Food Court/Hawker Centre. It is located about 600m away from KSL City Mall. Really Big Place, this is an open-air modern-style Hawker Centre with Plenty of seating and Plenty of Stalls that are more focused on Familiar Local Malaysian Cuisines. Many stalls with a myriad of food. Clean, airy and spacious. The stall owners were mostly friendly. It opens till 2 am.

1 foodie commented, "The food prices here are comparable to those in KL and PJ. Feeling glad that they sell Carlsberg here at RM19 per bottle, reasonable."
"This location is cool and breezy. There is such a wide variety of food that I have difficulty in choosing what to eat." => "ordered Family Ong Ban Mee soup. Their herbal soup is cooked with Angelica sinensis - Dang gui, goji berries and mani cai. Herbal soup tastes strong, not bitter. Their pork is well marinated and tender. Their ban mee is cooked al dente and tastes QQ."
