Bukit Payung, which literally translates to “Umbrella Hills” in the Malay Language, is a small hill in Batu Pahat. With an elevation of less than 300m, the hills on this part of the trail are overshadowed by the many other popular mountains in Johor. The 5 bukits are: Bukit Botak, Bukit Berdiri, Bukit Alam, Bukit Bandkuit, and Bukit Payung. Though only ~300 m tall, the route along the ridges provides excellent views of the surrounding terrain and towns.
Though the trek may sound daunting, many hikers have reviewed it as beginner-friendly, thanks to the gentle-sloping terrain. Consider it just the right amount of cardio to work up an appetite for a lok lok feast after. Suitable for active beginners looking for new hiking challenges.
- Trail Features:
The route features a mix of forest paths and open grasslands, providing varied terrain and rewarding scenic viewpoints. - Total hiking distance 8 km +-, elevation 400 m+-, 5.5 hours
- Difficulty:
The hike is generally considered easy to moderate and beginner-friendly, but it requires a good level of fitness to complete in under half a day. The last section to Bukit Payung includes some scrambling, but nothing too difficult.
Local breakfast - Yong Peng’s Culinary Pit Stop with Heart
This Coffee Shop is a nostalgic culinary landmark that locals love, and travellers can’t resist. Foodies stop by for the hearty fare, old-school charm, and authentic Malaysian flavours that hit all the right notes. This humble, no-frills coffee shop is the kind of place where the clink of ceramic cups and the aroma of kopi-o set the tone for a classic Malaysian dining experience. Simple plastic chairs, tiled floors, and the buzz of friendly chatter give it a comforting, time-travel kind of atmosphere. It’s where tradition lives, and taste leads.
It’s where generations of locals have gathered over breakfast or lunch, where travellers can mingle with regulars, and where the soul of Yong Peng’s food scene truly shines.
