We are going to hike the East Palisades Trail on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, climbing to beautiful views from towering bluffs and hiking through a small bamboo forest. This is one of the most scenic in-town hikes in Atlanta. Other points of interest in this hike is a high-elevation overlook as well as a cave!

Meeting time: 8:15 am (a bit earlier so hopefully we all get legit parking)
Meeting Point: Parking lot off of Indian Trail Road
Note: Parking at the lot is limited, and there are "No Parking" signs along the Indian trail road, however last few times I was there I noticed tons of cars parks on the road anyway.
Parking Fee: $5; NOT CASH, paid thru park services website
Elevation Gain: 703ft

Beginners and/or kids (with parent/s) are welcomed, provided you keep up with the pace and do not slow down the whole group.
Dogs are OK while on leash.

Bring: water, snack
Wear: hiking shoes or regular boots; moderate hike; hiking poles are useful

1. No smoking or vaping while you are with the group.
2. There is no optional portion of the hike. We all go on the same route.
3. No shortcuts please!
4. We will walk at a pace of around 2.5 mph, please do not join if you cannot keep up.

The Sawnee Mountain Preserve in Cumming is 963 acres with hiking trails, Indian Seats, a tree canopy classroom, playground, two picnic pavilions, climbing area, amphitheater and visitor center. The trails and visitor center are open daily.
The preserve contains several trails:
Indian Seats Trail
Hilltop Trail
Mountainside Trail
Church Access Trail (we will be on an uphill side road for around 3/4- 1 mile) (Optional)
Ridgeline Trail
We will start from Indian Seats Trail hike to the summit of Sawnee Mountain, an outstanding overlook with beautiful, long-range views of the North Georgia mountains. It’s easily one of the best views in North Georgia. The Indian Seats Trail hikes over and around the sheer face of Sawnee Mountain, exploring breathtaking views of the distant rolling ridgeline of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Coming back down from Indian Seats trail, we continue to hike the Hilltop Trail, Mountainside Trail, Church Access Trail and finally come back from Ridgeline Trail.

NOTE: it is 2500 and NOT 2505! If you are coming from Cumming, once you see the sign for the Sawnee Preserve, you need to turn RIGHT. If you see a playground in the parking lot then you are in the wrong parking, just cross the road to 2500!

This is a beginner/intermediate hike. A couple of baby hills and a few steps but otherwise flat along the Chattahoochee River but I'd like to go at a moderate pace between 2.5 - 3.0 mph. It is not a run. 5.1 miles. You can find a copy of the trail map here:

We'll start with the little loop to see the old Jones Bridge and then walk along the water, loop back around the field and retrace our steps to get back to the car.

We'll meet in the parking lot at the very end of the entrance road. Restrooms are open/ Please remove all valuables visible in your vehicles because there have been acts of vandalism. There are 2 entrances to Jones Bridge coming from Holcomb Bridge. The first is the environmental center....don't turn here. Go to the next one. Go all the way to the end.

If you don't have an annual pass I suggest buying one on line. At Jones Bridge and all CRNRA parks there are no longer any envelopes and or normal credit card registration. You have to scan the bar code and enter your license plate, etc. etc. It doesn't work on all browsers so you may be doing a little downloading. Come early and be prepared or you won't be able start on time.

NOTE: Powers Island NOT Island Ford

This is probably one of my favorite hikes.

We'll meet at 9:45 to use facilities and get parking pass. You are late if you get there after 9:45. Introductions at 9:55. But if you are late wait near the bathrooms on the road as we will come through.

We will park at Power Island as more spots available and meet at the bathroom...closer to the road not the trail. We will hike Interstate North /cochran shoals then through cochran shoals and to the columns drive bathroom. Maybe we will then climb into the woods abd walk to the sope creek bathroom...so 4 bathrooms and lots of trails. We will return a different way.

This hike is definitely not one for beginning hikers or for folks who have done only relatively flat hikes. I won't leave people behind, so the entire group will have to wait for very slow hikers. Please respect others and don't overestimate your ability to handle this hike.

5450 Interstate N Pkwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 is the exact address for Powers Island. The pin on the map is correct.

$5 parking daily pass is needed, unless you have an annual Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area.
