• Sketch the Elizabeth Street Sculpture Garden!

    Elizabeth Street Garden

Tucked away in SoHo/Nolita is a hidden gem - a beautiful sculpture garden with all sorts of diverse art and plants and structures. Let's meet there and sketch! We'll meet up at the entrance on Elizabeth Street, between Prince and Spring. You can't miss it. The Garden is actually just about the only green park space throughout the whole area. But what's a shame is that the city is working to replace it with new fancy-schmancy apartments. This event is free, but while we're there, if you want to donate to support the park (their legal fees fighting the development), I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it. Likewise with signing their petition, and even by promoting this event and posting photos, etc. You can learn more here: https://www.elizabethstreetgarden.com/ . Again, that part is all totally optional. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. Looking forward to sketching with you! ---------- IMPORTANT: In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day. ---------- What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome! Don't be shy to ask anyone anything! • We sketch for a bit, usually 45 minutes or so, and then get back together and share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc. There's usually time for 3 or 4 sketches. • Please bring your own supplies - anything you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, iPad, whatever suits you. • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another! • We take photos to share on the site later. Take a bunch! • Sorry, but please leave the dogs at home; they tend to step on the artwork. Thanks. • This Meetup is FREE and everyone at all skill levels is welcome! ---------- Please note that if you add a comment below it will spam everyone with an email, so please use your judgement.

  • Sketch Madison Square Park and the Flatiron!

    Flatiron Building

One of the most beautiful spots in the city and one of the places that made me first fall in love with the city when I first moved here. We'll meet in the plaza north of the Flatiron building, draw there, and then move into the park near the fountain, too. And then maybe we can get some Shake Shack afterwards if the line isn't insane. Oh man, their chicken sandwich is so good. Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. Looking forward to sketching with you! ---------- IMPORTANT: In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day. ---------- What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? • Sketch First Park & the First Street Art Park!

    First Park

First Park - on First and First - is one of my favorite little parks in the city, with a beautiful pagodish kiosk and strung lights and a nearby rainbow fruit stand. It's tiny, so we'll do a quick sketch there and then walk down the street to the First Street Art Park (no relation). That's a long space along Houston St. with rotating street art under shady trees. Some great surprises are there waiting for us to sketch! • Sketch the Village: Father Demo Square, Bleecker Street and more!

    Winston Churchill Square

This is one of my favorite areas of the city, in the heart of the Village: Father Demo Square, Winston Churchill Square, and Bleecker Street. We'll be sketching in this whole area. A beautiful fountain, sculpture, greenery, lots of seating, lots of nice architecture and interesting stores. And Grom gelato! Let's meet in front of Winston Churchill Square, which is a tiny spot and not crowded. This will make it easy for everyone to find us. Then we'll spread out to sketch and then meet back up. Take a look at the map to see where we are, and text me if you have any trouble. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Sketch the historic Morris-Jumel Mansion!

    Morris-Jumel Mansion

Built in 1765, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest house in all of Manhattan. It was a base for both sides at different times in the Revolutionary War, and among its guests has hosted John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and John Quincy Adams. And now you! The grounds are what initially drew me to this spot to sketch - they are beautiful. But we will also have access to the historic house itself. And it's right next to Sylvan Terrace, a fascinating street. Lots to draw! Admission is $10, or $8 for seniors and students. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Sketch Gantry Plaza State Park!

    Pepsi-Cola Sign

If you haven't yet been to all the beautifully new and well-designed nooks of this long park, now's your chance! So many things to see and do - not to mention the amazing skyline always waiting to be drawn. This park is the gem of the booming LIC. We'll meet in front of the giant Pepsi-Cola sign. You can't miss it, it's one of the largest Pepsi-Cola signs in the area. • Special sketching day trip to Grounds for Sculpture

    Needs a location

One of my favorite artistically inspiring places happens to be in my home town of Hamilton, New Jersey. As a sculpture park, Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) isn't as famous as Storm King, but it's arguably better: easier to get to from NYC, and more dense (more stuff) so there's less walking. One of its unique appeals is a series of life-size statue scenes replicating famous Impressionist paintings, like the one above. But the other sculptures and scenery are also endlessly beautiful, and there are indoor exhibits as well. Also, there are peacocks walking around. (You can see a map here: https://www.groundsforsculpture.org/userAssets/file/GFS_2017_Map.pdf ) ---------- There's a lot of detail below, so PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: This is a special trip since it requires a NJ Transit train ride. (But it's worth it!) We'll meet in Penn Station (now the least artistically inspiring place ever created on earth) at 10:00 near the NJ Transit ticket machines/restrooms. The 10:14 train ride is little over an hour. The sculpture park is right near the Hamilton train station, and some cars will take us the 5-minute drive. (Don't miss the train. But if you do, take the next one, nbd.) GFS Tickets are $20 adults, $17 seniors. One-way train tickets are $16.25, $7.35 for seniors. Please pay me in person for the GFS tickets, but buy your own train tickets. We'll get lunch together, but lunch is not included in the cost above. Currently, I'm thinking we'll aim for the 4:24 train back, but perhaps we could leave in more than one group, as well. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Learn to sketch from your imagination!

    Needs a location

Pretty much every art class helps us draw from life: figures, landscapes, still life(lives?), more figures ... but that's not the only purpose of art. Abstraction and imagination are just as important to learn, and just as much fun - and rarely taught. We've done an event like this once before, and it was very popular. This is a placeholder here - stay tuned for more details like location and everything! Thanks for your patience. - Jesse ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked].
