What we’re about
Howdy. MJ here. I'm a Chicago fella now +21yrs in Sydneytown living in the CBD (Central Business District)... NOBODY knows Sydney better than I do, cause she's my girl / my lover... Cool bars. Amazing hikes. Great places to eat. Yup. I know it and love it all.
Let's share it together... Perhaps your style is:
*I like long walks on the beach... "*NO. That's so cliche on Bumble."
*I want to hike 30kms on rugged terrain... "*Nah. Too much."
*I want to do a pub crawl... "*F that. I'm too old."
Or?
"I fancy time in Mother Nature exploring beautiful hikes / walks in Sydney while meeting cool people. I want to check out some new bars and hydrate myself with a wine, beer or cocktail at the finale."
If the final statement suits your style??? Welcome to the group. Let's have some fun. See you soon! MJ
(The leader of "We Hike... to the Bar" is an experienced walker / hiker but he is not a professional hiker [less "Bear Grylls" and more "Beer Grills"], and he does not hold himself out to be a professional. Whilst it is his intention to run each event at the highest possible safety standards ultimately the responsibility for your safety and well being will at all times be up to you. Pack wisely - sunscreen, water, First-Aid supplies, etc... When you RSVP for an event, you declare you are fit, healthy, and able to hike that event. When you RSVP for an event with "We Hike... to the Bar" you are automatically agreeing to indemnify the organiser from any liability for yourself and/or your possessions. Hiking is an inherently risky activity and you participate at your own risk.)
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- 5 WATERFALLS & 2 HIKES! Lawson to Emu Plains to The Log Cabin for drinks & food!Lawson railway station , Lawson
Besides meeting you ratbag-degen-loose units and talking shit and laughing away, the best thing about our hiking group… clearly is the hikes. Third would be the super cool bars we’ve found.
Last… (yet perhaps should be first) is the three variables above combining to get us going to NEW LOCATIONS in Sydney that I’ve never been to nor would go to if it wasn’t for you all. So? Thanks for that. And? Here’s another “new hike, new destination, and new bar” in The Wild, Wild West of Sydneytown. Some of you have asked for “a hike out west” so anybody living west of Pyrmont: I expect to see you on this one!!!
THE HIKE(S).
LAWSON WATERFALL CIRCUIT (Map to the left)
Sheez how am I just learning about this one? It’s a 5kms, 1.5hrs hike with 5 Waterfalls! Amazing. We start at Lawson Station and complete this loop circuit which features Adelina Falls, Junction Falls, Federal Falls, Lower Cataract Falls, and Upper Cataract Falls. The pics look amazing.EMU PLAINS TO PENRITH (Map to the right)
We’ll take the train to Emu Plains (if driving, park somewhere around there to meet us as we move towards Penrith), depart there, and check out the Nepean River Walk… which has great reviews as well. 3kms, 4kms? Something like that ‘til we hit The Log Cabin to re-fuel.THE FOOD & DRINK.
The Log Cabin (EST. 1826) in Penrith looks looooovely… right on the water. Huge beer garden. And it’s Legend Member Kylie’s recommendation. We’ve got a 245pm booking.THE TIMING.
Train 1: Central 824am, arrives Lawson 1009am
(Drivers can park at North Honour Avenue Car Park)
Hike 1: 2hrs to Hike Lawson Falls Loop
Train 2: Lawson 1157am, Penrith 1252pm
Hike 2: Penrith River Hike 1pm to 245pmIt's a lot of moving parts, but the timing will work! If anything goes tits up in Lawson with the hike, “The Henry Hotel” is there for a beer / catch the next train (they run hourly). We’ll still make our 245pm lunch and drinks. Our Penrith River session would be abbreviated / perhaps a bit of a post-lunch hike too. Can play by ear.
THE OTHER STUFF
a) Be on time / Honour your RSVP. No shows get banned from the group. I put my credit card down for a reservation – your reservation.
b) $10 Cash or PayID.
c) Be reasonably fit. Both hikes are meant to be “easy” but the waterfall hike will have some incline – be sure you can smash it so we make our train time.
d) Bring mates, dates, etc...See you for a beautiful (new) hike, (new) food & drinks, and (more) laughs. MJ
- WHALE HIKE! Mona Vale Beach to Long Reef Headland, Lunch & Some Beers!!!Mona Vale Hotel, Mona Vale, NSW
Turimetta Beach. Warriewood Beach… So. Damn. Beautiful. If these are new to you as they were me a couple of weeks ago (I took the pics below), ready yourself for a beautiful experience. The whales will be running south too. And the finish at Long Reef Headland (240million years old) is nothing short of spectacular. This hike is tops!!!
MONA VALE TO LONG REEF HEADLAND (12kms)
Looks hard to get to? It’s so easy and quick to get there with the B1 Bus - I love that sexy banana-double-decker-people-mover. Let’s between 11am and noon (I'll be there early) – I know some of you loooove a sleep in. Grab an early beer or lunch. We start hiking at noon. Keen to just hike? Cool. Meet us in the covered beer garden in the back at 1155am. The Mona is a GREAT pub. The hike...Mona Vale is a lush beach town, and we’ll hike around a beautiful golf course right on the coast, climbing to Warriewood Beach – shockingly beautiful, and the Sunrise Kiosk is one of the coolest beach cafes I’ve seen in Sydney. It’s here where we saw a whale pretty close up. We’ll hike into Turimetta Head lookout then to Turimetta Beach – another hidden gem that you can only hike to. Narrabeen Lookout offers views all the way down the coast… then we’ll descend onto Narrabeen Beach for a bit of beach walking / view, but we’ll rest the legs and head down Ocean St as well as this sand is pretty soft / tedious to hike on.
Collaroy Beach (another beaut) is home to a very cool pub, The Collaroy Hotel… it’s hard not to stop there for a beach beer. We continue on past Collaroy Rockpools which are lovely, then up and around Long Reef Headland. You won’t forget this spot – great views, as it’s the highest point on the Sydney coast. A hike with pics galore to Long Reef Beach & Surf Club is where we finish (if driving, I think you can park there, then jump on the 199 bus to The Mona to the start – please do your research).
The 199 bus is right there which is a quick transfer to the B1 (back to the city) or stay on the 199 to Manly Beach. Shall we get a beer on the way? I’m keen.A few weeks ago, we hiked this in the opposite direction (Long Reef to Mona Vale), so I’m equally excited to see the views from the Mona to Long Reef journey! Feel free to join the Whatsapp Chat for updates, pic sharing, etc...
THE DETAILS.
a) Fitness. I’ll put this in the mid-challenging range. Not easy. Not hard. So, please be fit and able.
b) $10 for this one.
c) Be on time / honour your RSVP. No shows on days like these are… well, not on at all. It's anti-social. You’ll be nudged out of the group.
d) Have a profile pic up, eh? It shows the group you’re real – and real people show up to hike.
e) The Mona. Google Maps it. It’s at the B1 “last stop” – the pub is literally 30metres away.See you Saturday! MJ
