What we’re about

Hello everyone! Thank you for your interest in The Art of Photography - Tampa/St. Pete Chapter.
We are a Community for higher level Photography from the Tampa Bay area and beyond.

The purpose of The Art of Photography - Tampa/St. Pete Chapter is to help you elevate your creative and artistic skills and then translate those skills into compelling photographic work.

We do this by

Sharing our work with our members
Providing constructive commentary and critiques
Offering weekly photography review sessions (online)
Offering photography and post-processing classes (online)
Organizing interesting photo shoots
Conducting photo contests and challenges

All of our activities are FREE of charge and offered by our members - people like you and me who want to share their passion for artistic photography.

This waterfront bar/restaurant is a hidden gem here in St Petersburg. It is located on Gandy Blvd heading East to Tampa. The picture above I took this week from the dock looking back to the waterfront and dining, and as you can see this is a unique waterfront place to visit. We are starting at 7 PM to give us a chance to have dinner and a drink before the sunsets at 8:26 PM. Keep in mind this is a business and private property and if you arrive to take pictures, it is expected you will at least be dining, otherwise, they could tell us to leave. The Hungarian-born André Kertész wasn’t always regarded as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Revered for his advancements in photojournalism, the photo essay and composition, Kertesz was largely unknown in the art community, save the belated attention he received in the ‘60s, and again in the ‘80s.

Perhaps he’s best known for his sensitive images of the everyday. And though he considered himself a realist and documentarian, he was informally associated with the surrealist movement, and also leant on the teachings of cubism.

Freud once said reality is that which ‘gets in the way’ — that which disrupts or shackles our fantasies and dreams. In the case of photo realism, it’s argued what is considered ‘real’ in photography isn’t just formal technique or objective style.

This take on realism defined Kertész early on in his career as one of the founders of photojournalism. As a young man he photographed Hungarian peasants on the streets, pioneering the use of a small camera. His snapshots reveal moments, or surprises, in every day life. He was a mentor to Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and Brassai — a look at their oeuvres hark back to Kertész.
