Fort Yargo Full Moon Hike (Super Moon)

Monday, October 6th is a full moon. Further, it's a super moon, meaning that the moon is at it's closest point to the earth and will appear ever so slightly larger in the sky than normal. Lets take it in with a hike around Fort Yargo Lake.

FORT YARGO STATE PARK REQUIRES A $5 PARKING FEE, UNLESS YOU HAVE A STATE PARK PASS, WHICH COVERS THE FEE.

The hike will be mostly in the dark. So, bring a light source (headlamp, flashlight, etc.). DO NOT RELY ON YOUR CELL PHONE FOR LIGHT. We'll hike 6 miles around the lake with minimal elevation gain. Some of this will be in the woods, but we should get multiple great views of the moon. Moonrise occurs at 6:55 pm. WE MUST EXIT THE PARK BY 10:00 pm (when they lock the gates) and so, we'll be maintaining a pace of around 2.5 mph with a few stops to enjoy the event. Make sure you can keep up.

As always, inclement weather may force me to cancel the hike. I will be monitoring the forecast closely and will post a cancellation (if appropriate) by noon on the day of hike. Please ensure you check this event in Meetup, prior to heading to the trailhead.

Directions:

• From the I85/I285 Junction northeast of downtown, follow I85N for 11.3 miles.
• Exit onto GA316/US29/University Drive towards Lawrenceville (there are multiple combined exits - watch the signs carefully)
• Continue on GA316/US29/University Drive for 15.4 miles and then take exit 5 and turn left onto Hwy 81/Loganville Hwy
• Drive 2.7 miles until you reach Fort Yargo Ave
• Enter the park, pay your fees or show your state parks pass and find parking near the visitor center
• We'll meet just outside the main entrance to the visitors center

We will leave promptly at 6:30 pm. Don't be late.
