    Meet up & Social Time: 8:15 a.m. Walk Time: 8:30 a.m. These trails combine beautiful photographic views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island, with the opportunity for a vigorous 1 1/2-2 hr. hike. There are various trails on the preserve, so depending on the group, the walk can be moderate or strenuous-- or both. Hikers can go at their own pace. Expect a good work out as we follow trails down to the water and back up to the main trail. There are various trails, so we don't have to do the same ones each time. After our hike, we usually meet for brunch and socialize (optional). Our favorite eateries are Yellow Vase, Tomatillo or Poke Me in the Golden Cove shopping center at Hawthorne and Palos Verdes Blvd. South. You can also just have coffee, etc. on the patio in front of the golf club. Please join us for great morning exercise and good company!

  • Thursday Pelican Cove Walk

    Pelican Cove Park

    Gathering time is 9:15am. We'll start the walk right at 9:30am. The Pelican Cove Parking Lot is 1200 feet to the west of the intersection of Terranea Way/Palos Verdes Drive South. To access the lot, from San Pedro, drive past the intersection of Terranea Way/Palos Verdes Drive South to Point Vicente, turn left into the Point Vicente Parking Lot and then turn around to exit the lot right (traveling south), back onto Palos Verdes Drive. The Pelican Cove Parking Lot (a right turn) is the next lot you come to as you travel back toward San Pedro. From P.V. (driving south) turn right into the parking lot just past Point Vicente. Leave yourself some extra time to find us the first time you walk. The Trail Head is at the far end of the lot at the Terranea side of the lot. Look for us at the Pelican Statue. We go for coffee after the walk at the Sea Beans Coffee Shop near the Lobby of the Terranea Resort, this is in the middle of the walk and not near the parking lot, so bring some money with you. This is an easy walk that is mostly flat and takes about 1 1/2 hour to complete. Plan on extra time to socialize at Sea Beans. View of the Pelican Cove Parking Lot, traveling south toward San Pedro Detailed Route: From the South End of Pelican Cove Park by the statue of the pelican, we take the Terranea Trail south towards Nelson's and Long Point. Then we take the short section of Beach Trail right to the water's edge and to the rocky "cave." Here we usually socialize and take pictures for a while; so, if you are ever late, this is the place to catch up with us. Next we take the Beach Trail back to the Terranea Trail and continue south along the bluff to the Vanderlip Park Trail, which we follow until it ends at the fence at Coastal Drive. From there we head back on the Vanderlip Trail to the Terranea Trail, but this time we swing into Terranea Resort and usually socialize at the Sea Beans Coffee Shop on the 4th floor (the Lobby Floor). When done, we pick up the Terranea Trail and head back to the Pelican Cove Parking Lot and our cars. If you measure the distance on the map, it is about 2 miles for the entire walk.

  • Kayak or SUP in Huntington Harbor (OEX Sunset Beach)

    We kayak at OEX in Huntington Beach once a monh on a Friday, so be on the look out for the exact dates. Your choice whether you want to kayak or stand up paddle. (This kayaking events alternates every other week with another one we have at Kayaks on the Water in Long Beach (near Ocean & 54th.) For those of us wanting to improve our skills and stamina -- and maybe embark on a full weekend of kayaking and hiking -- twice a month makes sense. Meet up and Social time: 10:00 a.m. (Note: We meet 30 minutes before the start signup and pay, get our kayak ad paddle, get the group assembled and launch together.) Kayak and SUP launch: 10:30 a.m. You can paddle in a single or tandem kayak with a buddy. We'll plan for 2 hours of kayaking around Huntington Harbor. Even though life jackets may be used, you must know how to swim to participate in this activity. This is a really enjoyable activity that burns up lots of calories. This activity is cancelled in case of rain or bad weather. Note: Make sure to use sunscreen and quick dry clothing if possible. Bring a towel and if you want to be totally dry afterward, a change of clothing.   • Let's Walk (8,000 Steps!) at Gorgeous Pelican Cove

    Meet up and Social Time: 8:45 a.m. Walk Begins: 9:00 a.m. (Call if you are running late; change your RSVP to NO if you change your mind. Thanks.) This walk is suitable for ALL LEVELS of walkers, beginning to strong! Note: If this is your first time, and you have trouble finding Pelican Cove, call NOTE: If you want to add 2000 steps, Melody starts the walk from Point Vicente at 8:45 a.m. and then meets the rest at the Pelican Cove parking lot. Please meet Melody in front of the Pt. Vicente Museum (by the amphitheater style steps. (You can park in the lot behind the museum; then walk around to the front.) Walking Pelican Cove you will discover a beautiful ocean trail with wildflowers and jack rabbits . You will experience an absolutely breath-taking walk along the cliffs of Palos Verdes with glorious morning views of ocean, bluffs, pelicans, and even sometimes dolphins and whales. We incorporate socializing into the walk. There's a stop for coffee, drinks, snacks, etc. at the Sea Bean, a delightful spot on the Terranea Resort. This is truly a wonderful walk to start the day and have as part of your week! The Pelican Cove Parking Lot is 1200 feet to the west of the Terranea Way/Palos Verdes Drive South intersection. To access the lot traveling from San Pedro, first turn left into the Point Vicente Parking lot, turn around and exit the lot to the right. Go back along Palos Verdes Drive South to the next parking lot (Pelican Cove). From P.V. go past Point Vicente to the next lot. Once you find it the first time you'll be fine. Leave yourself some extra time to find the trail head which is located at the Pelican Cove Parking Lot on the Terranea side. Look for a statue of a Pelican at the trail head. P.S. - We have been enjoying this walk every single walk for at least two years, and one of our greatest joys on the walk is seeing the marine life, and specifically the pelicans perched on the rocks at Pelican Cove and flying in formation along the gorgeous coastline.   • Hills, Hills & More Hills

    Meetup time is 9:15am and the walk begins at 9:30am. The walks will always include hills, but may be at different places each week. So keep watching for changes. The regular route will be 3.5 miles, 450 ft gain, and take around 1-1/2 hours. An extended option is also available to those interested: 5.5 miles, 800 ft gain, 2-1/2 hrs total. If you're going on the extended hike, you need to find parking that is not restricted to 2 hrs. There is unrestricted parking on Via del Puente. Enter from PV Drive west in front of the fire station. Also on PV Drive west in front of the shopping center.

  • 1st Friday Bike Ride -- Torrance Beach to Playa del Rey and back

    We'll ride along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail to the Pacific Ave. bridge, the bridge that goes over Ballona Creek into Marina del Rey. If the group is adventurous, we could even continue into Marina del Rey. It's 24 miles roundtrip to the bridge and back, basically flat, with a few inclines around Dockweiler Beach. We'll ride past the Redondo Beach Pier, Hermosa Beach Pier, Manhattan Beach Pier, LAX, and Dockweiler Beach. We'll leave at 9:30am, so plan to arrive about 9:15am. There are no bike rentals available on this section of the beach, but you can rent bikes in Hermosa Beach at Hermosa Cyclery. If you're going to rent a bike, send me a message and we'll meet you by the surfer statue on the Pier in Hermosa Beach. Bring water and a snack. Depending on how the group feels, we can stop for lunch along the way, perhaps at Playa Provisions in Playa del Rey.
