What we're about

Welcome to The Ohio River Rat Society. If you decide to join this meetup, you're not only joining a group, but yet a family of kayakers/rats all with one focus in mind; and that's having fun. From the first paddle you'll feel like you've been with this group for years; as we are the most nonjudgmental group of misfits you'll ever grow to love!

This is a group for anyone interested in kayaking central Ohio and surrounding areas. The trips will provide opportunities for paddlers of all skills levels to get their "paddle on"; from passive river and lake trips to adventurous whitewater excursions. Please do not let the name deter you as we offer trips for all ages and skill levels as stated. With the exception of a few higher classed rivers, all the rivers we paddle can be enjoyed by even beginner paddlers. If you have a special need just let us know and we'll see what we can do to accommodate your request.

In addition, we enjoy group gatherings at our homes, around campfires, a local pub or even a popular movie. In other words, we enjoy multiple activities as a "family of rats"

Bottom line is this. If you are looking to have a summer of fun and excitement on the water, exploring new things and in different areas, be yourself and act like a kid again; then you need to join the River Rats.

We look forward to seeing you on the river.

8th Annual River Rat Anniversary Party

2692 Jordan Rd

It's hard to believe that a year has almost passed since the celebration of our 7th Anniversary, and this Feb 6th will be our 8th year as a family. We'll gather for food, drinks and merrymaking this night in hopes we'll be able to have a bonfire out back, so be prepared to bring a chair as well as your favorite dish. For the rest of us, Rosemary Wallace had a great idea a few years back and that was to allow the alphabet to determine what people brought. Meaning all last names starting between A-M brought some sort of main-course/side dish, and those from N-Z brought desert. BYOB Looking forward to another great gathering as we have in years past.

Volunteers needed for the 2nd Annual DeFuniak Springs, Florida Lakefest

NOTE: Due to the Corona Virus this event has been postponed until 2021. Therefore I'll be removing the names of those who signed up for this year in order to give people the opportunity to check their schedules and sign up again if they're able. Either way, it's the thought that counts and I appreciate all that were committed to making this happen. Second Annual DeFuniak Springs Paddlefest! Hey guys, you read right. We have an opportunity as the AKA/River Rats to head to Florida for a 3 day Lakefest, again this year. We'll be conducting a night paddle and parade on the water on Friday the 21st, an all day come as you wish to explore paddling the second day, and finally on Sunday we'll hold a skills course. Volunteers will be asked to assist with getting paddlers in and out of the boats, paddling along side them to insure safety and simply just having fun on the water. We will be holding ACA L1 SmartStart Courses of which you're more than welcome to participate in or help in conduct should you hold an L1 or higher certificate. However, certification is not required to join us. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THESE EVENTS ON EVENTBRITE. This is just to show you what's going on the 3 days we'll be there. NOTE: Unless you are driving with us, volunteers aren't required to be there until 4pm on Friday the 21st Myself and whoever rides me will have to be there roughly 30 hours prior to the event to set up and assure all systems are a go. Therefore, I plan on getting there around 4pm on Weds the 19th Let me know if you're interested in going to Florida for the weekend? Also, I've been ask to clarify, This is a WORKING trip. Everyone will be expected to provide manual labor related to boats of course. We do not expect you to dig a canal, just a ditch. :) Ask those who went last year, it was hot and tiring, and the days were long; so like other such adventures please know what you're getting into.. However, as you saw by the pictures we did reward ourselves.. :) Primitive camping will be at Grayton Beach State Park, in the same spot we were in last year. However, there are obviously hotels in the area if you wish to get yourself a room. PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS YOU ARE 100% POSITIVE YOU CAN GO!

Ironman Ohio 70.3 - 5th Season - Pre-Party

Delaware State Park

Well here we go again with one of the many events we host each year thanks to your support. Last year we had over 70 amazing volunteers come out to join us for what has become the second largest Ironman in the country. Yep, the country! This year proves to be even bigger and better so don't miss out. If you ever wanted to join us come on down, if you're a seasoned veteran you know this is one of the funnest events of the season. We'll be kicking it off on Sat with another water safety course if people would like to participate as we did in year 2. Camping will be allowed again this year because we have been good stewards of the beach and are welcome. Night paddles and BBQ goes without saying. Here's the link to sign up as in years past. Find Kayak, Canoe & SUP and sign up under that section. Note: The registration link isn't active yet, so you'll have to sign up online as well once I get the link. That must mean summer is coming! Think warm thoughts! :) Thanks again everyone, you guys rock! Sami
