What we’re about
Welcome to the Tokyo Gaming Discussion Club (TGDC)—something akin to a book club, where gaming fans spread across the 23 wards of Tokyo and Kanto beyond can come together to discuss what they’ve been playing and share their passion for it. The hope for the club is to bring together all corners of gaming fandom—whether you make games, write, read, or simply enjoy playing them, but with at least some hot takes on what you’re playing—to have a freewheeling conversation and hang out for a few hours every few weekends. Conversations will likely be held in English but Japanese speakers are more than welcome to join as we should be able to accommodate translation with multilingual speakers.

Tokyo Gaming Discussion Club IS BACK (were we ever gone?) Even more anticlimactic, we’re back every once-a-month at this current pace of cadence as the only Meetup group in Tokyo that lets you share, pontificate, proclaim, anything within the bounds of gaming to a seated audience in a freewheeling roughly 2-hour conversation. Or, just imagine your favorite video game podcast show. We're the amateur hour simulator experience of it!
Our next session will be held July 19th from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at Italian Tomato Caffè Vigore, Komaba, the University of Tokyo. No RSVP limit here, although our groups have been totaling around 5 to 6 per meeting if you’d be curious how many people to expect. If we eventually reach around 8-10 that be pretty cool.
For those looking to learn more or attend their first session, this will be our fourth held session with now a few members joining regularly, so we’re finally building, bundling up the community with the conversation.
Past discussion topics have included:- Our watershed moments in gaming
- Is Animal Crossing just a low-key job simulator?
- When will we stop calling games “retro”?
- The real-life spelunking history of Castlevania
- The ethics of “save scumming”, i.e., how are games meant to be enjoyed?
- How gaming has shaped other aspects of our lives
And dozens more already inscribed into the TGDC archives!
If any of this sounds good, please come join us for TGDC4 or feel free to comment below for any questions about the event.
And just a smidge of brass tacks:
- Attendance is FREE.
- If you purchase food or drinks from any TGDC-seated venue, you are responsible for collecting a single individual receipt for your own purchase and paying it yourself at the cashier. TLDR: No group table ordering, no split-the-bill shenanigans. That’s why we’re setting up shop at a cafeteria (vs coffeehouse)
- Please try to arrive at the venue on time. 5 minutes early, big love to you.
Hope to see new and old folks there!
