Understanding Java with Simon Ritter

A recognized expert in Java and open source, he is passionate about advancing developer productivity, application performance, and innovation throughout the software ecosystem.
**Agenda**
**Keeping Your Java Hot by Solving the JVM Startup and Warmup Problem**
Java bytecodes and class files deliver on the original vision of âwrite once, run anywhereâ. Using a Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler allows JVM-based applications to compile only the code thatâs used frequently and optimise it precisely for how it's used. Using techniques like speculative optimisation can often deliver better performance than static, Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compiled code.
However, this flexibility and performance come at a cost. Each time the JVM starts an application, it must perform the same analysis to identify hot spots in the code and compile them. This is referred to as the application warmup time.
In this session, weâll look at several approaches to alleviating or even eliminating this problem. Specifically:
¡ Static compilation of Java code ahead-of-time (AOT). Specifically, the Graal native image approach
¡ Generating a JIT compiler profile of a running, warmed-up application that can be reused when the same application is restarted, eliminating the need for much of the JIT compilation. This will include details of the work of the OpenJDK Project Leyden.
¡ Decoupling the JIT compiler from the JVM for a Cloud environment. Providing a centralised JIT-as-a-Service allows caching of compiled code and offloading the compilation work when new code must be compiled.
¡ Creating a checkpoint of a running application. This includes all application state (heap, stack, etc.) in addition to the JIT-compiled code. Project CRaC will be used as an example.
At the end of the session, youâll be all set to keep your Java hot!
**Modern Java Puzzlers**
Since JDK 9, Java, as a language, has evolved faster than at any point in its 30-year history. For developers, this is great, as it means we get more new features that make our code more concise and, hopefully, easier to read and understand.
All new language features also bring their quirks and possibly unseen consequences.
In this fun interactive session, weâll examine a range of recent language features and pose questions to the audience about how the code works and what it does.
Weâll cover many of the new language features from recent releases, including switch expressions, sealed classes and pattern matching. Weâll even look at some curious ways special characters can be used in unexpected ways.
The answers will most definitely not always be as you expect!

Aikido Group Class (Adults & Teens, All Levels)
**For ages 12 and above.**
Aikido provides the Practitioners with knowledge and skills that will enable them to defend themselves against an opponent of superior size and strength through the use of smooth, fluid and circular movements. It emphasises blending with an opponentâs force rather than meeting it head on. Through the practice of Aikido, individuals can develop character qualities and values such as self-confidence, discipline, respect, and a sense of care and concern for one another.
The class also aims to help Practitioners to better manage stress, violence or even work-related issues with a calm, peaceful and a more harmonious approach/mind-set. Thus, the benefits of Aikido go beyond merely physical fitness and can contribute towards the overall development of an individual.

Move To Regulate- Dance Movement Therapy Workshop for Nervous System Reset
In a world where stress, overwhelm, disconnection, and constant stimulation have become common, many of us are moving through life without truly listening to what the body is holding.
**Move to Regulate** is a therapeutic dance & body-based healing workshop designed to help participants slow down, reconnect with themselves, and explore nervous system regulation through movement, dance, rhythm, grounding, and embodied awareness practices.
Drawing from **Dance Movement Therapy** principles, somatic approaches, nervous system education, grounding techniques, and body awareness work under the specially formulated R.I.M Integrated Dance Wellness Method- this workshop invites participants to understand how stress and emotions can live within the body and how movement can become a pathway toward release, regulation, expression, and connection.
Through specially designed stress release and body awareness sequences, participants will be guided into noticing sensations, patterns, breath, posture, rhythm, tension, activation, and ease within the body. The workshop will also include somatic and vagal toning exercises that support grounding, safety, co-regulation, and nervous system awareness.
Participants will explore different nervous system states through movement and experiential activities while learning how the body responds to stress, shutdown, overwhelm, safety, connection, and regulation.

Systema is a Russian Martial Art founded by the late Colonel Mikhail Ryabko and Vladimir Vasiliev. Systema was designed to develop individuals in a combative style which upholds the intrinsic value of all human life. This is why it is non-destructive â even of oneâs enemies. Through the use of simple exercises, breathing techniques and massage work, Systema helps you to build a strong mind and body.
Here is what you can expect:
**Warm ups**
Class begins with warming up each of the systems of the body â from the breathing, muscular and nervous system, each component needs to be properly engaged.
**Thematic studies**
Fetching from a huge pool of drills and sometimes even crafting specialized ones, our instructors format a logical progression of the concept being shared. Depending on the ability of the class, the drills are modified to be at the optimal level for learning, with suitable modifications given to students based on their individual performance.
**Application of concepts**
After the thematic studies, some time is given for the students to apply the training â the intensity is decided upon by the students under the supervision of the instructor. At times, the instructor will request for the students to push themselves, while at other times they are there to taper in the sparring to a productive level.
**Cool downs**
The cooldowns are usually done in a way both the help the class recover from the higher intensity application section as well as to revisit the concepts again in a calmer manner. This helps to ensure everyone is reminded of the key points. Sometimes we do a little massage.
**Training circles**
At the end of every training session, we circle up to share a few words about the training. This tradition was handed to us from our founders and is an integral part of our training.

Join us for an hour of writing! Weâve discovered that itâs strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if itâs true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing.

Bondage Photography Demonstration
**The event has been canceled.**
*Note: this is a demonstration event only, you **will not** shoot you own images. However, if you bring your camera we can test it for compatibility with the studio lights.*
Bondage elements can add an extra layer of emotion and artistry to your images. Sample images on the internet are however dominated by BDSM style shots that are often sexualized and emphasize the model being in distress. In this demonstration Rachel and I show ways to use bondage elements in an artistic way. We explore the types of accessories that work best in artistic images and the best way to photograph them.
Our model is Rachel Adams, an internationally known fetish model with many years of experience in this genre.
