The Question of Freedom: What Does It Mean to Be Truly Free?
The Question of Freedom: What Does It Mean to Be Truly Free?
### The Question of Freedom: What Does It Mean to Be Truly Free? Freedom is one of humanity’s most powerful and contested ideas. We celebrate it, fight for it, fear it, and sometimes misunderstand it. But what does freedom really mean? Is it the absence of limits, the ability to choose, or the courage to live in alignment with who we truly are? From ancient philosophy to modern society, freedom has taken many forms. For the Stoics, freedom meant inner independence — mastering one’s reactions rather than the world. For political thinkers like Rousseau or Mill, freedom was tied to rights, responsibility, and social structures. Existentialists such as Sartre pushed the idea further, claiming that we are “condemned to be free,” burdened with responsibility for our choices whether we want it or not. Spiritual traditions often point inward, suggesting that true freedom arises not from control, but from letting go. In everyday life, freedom feels paradoxical. We desire autonomy, yet we are shaped by culture, relationships, economics, technology, and expectations. More choices don’t always make us feel freer — sometimes they overwhelm us. At the same time, moments of genuine freedom often appear quietly: speaking honestly, setting boundaries, creating something meaningful, or choosing differently than before. So where does freedom actually live — in society, in choice, in mindset, or in action? In this session, we’ll explore freedom not as a slogan or ideal, but as a lived experience that unfolds between inner life and outer reality. Together, we’ll reflect on: * How have philosophers, cultures, and political systems defined freedom? * Is freedom primarily external (rights, choices) or internal (attitude, awareness)? * Can freedom exist without responsibility — or are they inseparable? * Why can too much choice feel restrictive rather than liberating? * How can we experience more freedom in daily life, even within limitations? * What does freedom mean in a world shaped by pressure, speed, and constant comparison? Join us for an open, thoughtful conversation where ideas meet personal experience — a space to question assumptions, share perspectives, and reconnect with what freedom means for *you*. 📅 **Event Details** đŸ—“ïž Date: Saturday, 17 January 2026 ⏰ Time: 14:00 📍 Location: Hardenbergstraße 10, 10623 Berlin đŸ“± WhatsApp (for prep materials and directions): 👉 **[Join Group Chat](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ba8ZAaH2Yuk6FGmD3LLO7H)**

Conflict to Connection: A Queer Zine workshop
Conflict to Connection: A Queer Zine workshop
**Conflict to Connection: A Queer Zine workshop** with SarĂĄ KrĂĄl event for **LGBTQIA+** **[Free event with registration](https://wearevillage.org/en/shop/zine-workshop/w03-2026)** To conclude the Conflict & Resilience project, we invite all participants from Radical Empathy — Queer Storytelling, the working group Conflicts as Opportunities, and anyone interested to come together and create a conflictual zine. This workshop has a hands-on, collective, and experimental character. Queer lives are shaped by tension – between belonging and exclusion, visibility and erasure, intimacy and distance. Instead of smoothing over these contradictions, we want to make them visible and work with their energy. Conflicts become starting points for creativity, connection, and shared learning. Together, we’ll create a zine that captures our experiences, questions, and frictions. Words, texts, fragments, collages, drawings, or notes – everything can find its place in this collective process. We’ll exchange ideas, tell stories, and weave individual voices into a shared expression. It’s going to be a collective zine – each participant will make a certain number of pages with their contribution. Zine-making is more than an artistic practice – it’s an act of self-empowerment and community building. By sharing our stories, we create space for diversity, contradiction, and mutual inspiration. Open to all ages and backgrounds – whether you’re making a zine for the first time or already have experience. Bring your ideas, your questions, and your conflicts – and let’s turn them into something new, together. Participants are invited to prepare a small contribution for the zine — such as a conflict story, poem or crossword — and bring any visual materials (magazines, stickers, cut-outs, photos) to support it **General information** **Participant**: this workshop series is open to LGBTQIA+ people. **Language**: Depending on the group’s needs, sessions will be held in German and/or English. **Cost**: Free of charge, registration required.

18.30 Uhr Philosophie Party Thema Gier
18.30 Uhr Philosophie Party Thema Gier

Consent / Learning about boundaries and communication
Consent / Learning about boundaries and communication
**Embodied Consent in ENGLISH** **Learning about boundaries and communication** with ***Karl-Henrik SahlĂ©n*** fĂŒr **LGBTQIA+** **English** **[free event with registration](https://wearevillage.org/en/shop/embodied-consent/w03-2026)** Being aware of your boundaries and expressing your consent or non-consent are essential skills in life, but we don’t often get a chance to actually practice consent skills in the same way we practice other skills, like singing, playing sports or learning a language. Consent is about much more than a simple yes or no. When we deconstruct consent, we discover how to communicate our true desires and stop choosing the things we don’t. Through discussion, movement and partner games, we will build tools to express and negotiate physical desires and set boundaries through the use of practical exercises. This workshop is inclusive and welcoming to individuals of all body sizes, genders, and background. This is a non-sexual workshop, and great, low pressure situation in which to practice communication and touching. It’s as much about how to truly say yes and mean it as it is about saying no! If you’ve not yet taken a consent workshop at the village, now is the time! This experience will not only help you navigate within the we.are.village community, but it will also equip you to carry these values into your life. Together, we aim to nurture a consent-centered community with shared values, emphasizing individual responsibility in upholding these principles. Our ultimate goal is to foster healthy relationships and create an inclusive community for a better, more connected future. **General Information** * **Registration**: max. 18 participants with registration. Limiting the number of participants is necessary to ensure the quality of the process. * **Language**: This workshop is conducted in **ENGLISH**. To ensure a better understanding of the subject, it is led alternately by a German-speaking teacher and an English-speaking teacher. Please select the workshop that best suits your language needs.

**Living in Color: Queer and Confident at 50+** with *Jörg Wellenkötter* for **GBTQ men\*** **[Free event with registration](https://wearevillage.org/shop/men50plus/w03-2026)** Queer people over 50 face a range of challenges in a society shaped by youth, physical attractiveness, and heteronormativity. Even within the queer community, there can be ageism, where older individuals are seen as less relevant or interesting. A lack of family structures or close friends can also lead to isolation in midlife. In this group, you’ll meet like-minded people who are also navigating the challenges of getting older. Here, we support and empower one another, share our experiences, and learn from each other. Together, we want to embrace the challenges of aging — and enjoy life to the fullest! **General information** **Language**: Depending on the group’s needs, sessions will be held in German and/or English. **Cost**: Free of charge, registration required. The First Table
The First Table
This is the first in-person meeting of Uncomfortable Conversations – Berlin. We’ll meet in a calm, sit-down setting to explore one central question together; slowly, honestly, and without rushing to conclusions. This is not a lecture, not a debate competition, and not a networking event. It’s a shared thinking space for people who are curious, willing to listen, and open to challenging their own views. To keep the conversation meaningful, participation is limited. Come if you’re interested in depth over comfort and questions over quick answers.

Software ate the world, Agents are eating Software Engineering
Software ate the world, Agents are eating Software Engineering
2026 may be the last year many developers write code by hand. We need coding agents to solve complex problems in production codebases, but vibe coding alone won’t get us there. Vibe coding is all gas, no brakes. It burns up the context window until the agent slips on its own slop. You can go fast at first, but the more you stuff into the context window, the more tangled its outputs get. While the industry is rapidly increasing code generation speed, we still have to understand, review, merge, and maintain what gets shipped. This talk featuring Michael Geiger will outline how coding agents (Claude Code + Gas Town) work and a framework for orchestrating them to solve complicated problems in complex codebases. It’s about steering the model: doing the research to align intent, planning the approach up front, implementing in parallel steps, and breaking early. Human judgment still matters, but it should be spent on high-leverage decisions: what to build, what to forbid, and “what is quality?”, not cleaning up slop. Attendees will leave with a checklist to identify workflow and environment gaps that hold agents back, so you and your team can ship higher-quality software starting tomorrow.

**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** GitHub Copilot is rapidly changing how developers write, understand, and maintain code. Powered by generative AI and deeply integrated into modern development environments, Copilot acts as an intelligent coding assistant, helping developers move faster while maintaining quality and focus. In this session, we’ll explore what GitHub Copilot is, how it works, and where it fits into a real-world developer workflow. We’ll break down what Copilot can (and cannot) do, where it can be used, and how licensing differs for individuals and organizations. Most importantly, this talk goes beyond theory with a live, hands-on demo showcasing Copilot inside the IDE and on GitHub, demonstrating how it can assist with code generation, refactoring, learning new APIs, and accelerating day-to-day development tasks. Designed for developers, technical leads, and engineering managers, this session provides a practical introduction to AI-assisted development, highlights best practices for getting value from Copilot, and closes with guidance on how to continue learning and evolving alongside this rapidly advancing tool. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how GitHub Copilot can enhance productivity, improve developer experience, and fit into modern software teams today, not someday. **YouTube Link** TBA
In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them. Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance". Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation of Central Ohio and Church of Scientology of Central Ohio.
Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream?
Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream?
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Optional topic for this meet up: Is life a dream? Dreams feel real while they last. Could life work the same way? How do we know we’re awake, and what follows if we can’t be sure? Let’s kick that around over a around of drinks: ‱ What makes something feel real: continuity, shared evidence, or meaning? ‱ How would you tell you’re awake (reality checks, memory, other people)? ‱ If life is dreamlike, what becomes of free will and responsibility? ‱ Is identity a story we keep telling—who’s the narrator? ‱ Are we author, actor, or audience in our dreams and how would you tell? ‱ Does art/film reveal reality or replace it? No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it’s fun.
