Kant’s Cave: Christian Michel - What are values?
**Christian Michel - What are values?**
‘Value’ is one of those loaded words we encounter every day. Value pops up in conversations between mathematicians (‘the value of x’), priests and philosophers (‘moral values’), politicians (‘British values’), economists (‘value as distinct from price’), artists (‘is beauty a bourgeois value?’) ...
Across its countless uses, does the word refer to a common quality? If it exists, where is the ‘valueness’ in value – as there would be a Hegelian ‘redness’ in all the appearances of red in the world? Is value a subjective judgement, anything that floats my boat? Or do values exist independently of any valuer’s opinion, for instance residing in nature, or in God’s plan for it? Or are values constructed, arising from human practices, conventions, and rational agreements? If so, could we ever construct a set of values around which to reconcile humanity?
We live in a time when the most established values our parents and grandparents lived by – human dignity, individual rights, democracy, social justice, truth and beauty… – are contested or ignored. Does it mean that the notion of value itself is obsolete, or that we simply don’t understand it?
**Christian Michel** is a journalist, essayist, who teaches economics at City Lit and has been a frequent speaker at Kant’s Cave over the years.

Can We Separate the Art from the Artist?
This session examines the status of the artwork when its creator becomes morally or politically contentious.
We’ll explore the thought that art may be autonomous from its maker, while also asking what happens when biographical knowledge reshapes our interpretation of the work.
We’ll examine whether moral criticism has a legitimate place in aesthetic judgment, and whether we can meaningfully separate the experience of art from the behaviour of the artist.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussion → share insights with the whole room
**Keep in touch:** Join our Philosophy Café Discord to continue the conversation anytime → https://discord.gg/UGxBqJXM

National Gallery Picture Hunt
Please register with the Gallery and pre-book your visit. This lets you enter quicker, bypassing any walk-ups queue. Aim to turn up for 1pm.
**We now meet outside the Sainsburys entrance further down, as the Gallery have issues with payments being taken inside the building. I’ll be wearing a red Meetup cap. If you’re late, we’ll be in rooms 27-32.**
The National Gallery was founded in 1824, after the British government bought a collection of 38 pictures from the banker and collector John Julius Angerstein, consisting of Italian, Dutch and English works.
We have a unique take on Treasure Hunts that broadens your art knowledge while sleuthing around gallery rooms.
You are all presented with a sheet of 20 part images taken from paintings in a few adjoining designated rooms.
You will also have a map of the Gallery. The selected adjoining rooms are listed P, Q, R and S. The clipboard holder enters the room letter to note the image location.
Your collective mission is to find them. Usually it’s groups of three to four depending on numbers.
Or bring a team of up to three guests with you! Check previous winners and Hunt sheet in the pics below.
Dead simple, right? Well, yes, if you can spot them all. Generally though, results are always close.
Check photos for the previous Hunt sheet. If you’re new, you can see what your team has to do. Stella said " I was apprehensive about trying this, but once I did, I loved it, our team was great fun".
We are a happy and friendly group whose membership for some now goes back ten years.
It’s very addictive wandering around looking at famous artwork. Our events make you see new parts of a painting you hadn’t noticed before. Or that fresh work has been introduced.
We’ve done quite a few in the last two years and feel very much at home here. There's plenty of seating around to take the odd rest and look at the same time.
Our Treasure Hunts are interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
**Just to repeat: Please pre-book if possible. You know it makes sense!**
We meet outside by the Sainsburys entrance. Look out for me under a red Meetup cap!
The starting process is as follows. The earlier your team sets off, the more time you have. So turning up early ready for a 1.30 start is a bonus.
Team answer sheets have to be back by 3.15.
We meet back in the area next to the Espresso cafe where we mark up. In case of a tiebreak, there will be a general art knowledge numerical question where the “nearest to” wins.
First team prizes are interesting varieties of chocolate. There is also a prize for the funniest/outrageous team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant.
So there’s everything to play for. Some players are thinking of team names before they turn up!
We always pop into the local Montague Pyke Wetherspoon or the Chandos across the road for a quick drink after if anybody so wishes.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
**There is a £7 cash/card charge on the day. I supply a pen and clipboard but it helps you to bring a pen as well to mark your own sheets.**
**Rucksacks now have to be worn front of body.** Items left in the cloakroom are charged at £3 per item.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed. If texting leave your name.
**Don’t forget to cancel via the “Edit RSVP” button if you can’t make it. Please do this well in advance when you know, so it allows good notice for someone else to take your place, and minimizes waiting time for non-attendees.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

The Psychology of Stupidity by Jean-Francois Marmion
In this event, we will discuss about a science or philosophy book chosen by London Science and Philosophy Book Club. The attendees will be divided into groups and each of them will focus on a chapter in the book. This month we will discuss about a fascinating book called The Psychology of Stupidity by Jean-Francois Marmion. If you haven't read the book, it's no problem. I will bring you up to speed with the discussion materials.
We will meet in a nice lounge area at 6 p.m for introductions. Please come on time so you will not miss out on valuable discussion midway. If you end up in the waitlist, feel free to show up.
Book Description:
Stupidity is all around us, from the colleagues who won’t stop hitting ‘reply all’ to the former school friends posting conspiracy theories on Facebook. But in order to battle idiocy, we must first understand it. In The Psychology of Stupidity, some of the world’s leading psychologists and thinkers – including a Nobel Prize winner – will show you . . .
· Why smart people sometimes believe in utter nonsense
· How our lazy brains cause us to make the wrong decisions
· Why trying to debate with fools is a trap
· How media manipulation and Internet overstimulation makes us dumber
· Why the stupidest people don’t think they’re stupid
As long as there have been humans there has been human stupidity, but with wit and wisdom these great thinkers can help us understand this persistent human affliction.
Agenda:
6 p.m to 6:30 p.m: Introduction and Socializing
6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m: Book Discussion
8:30 p.m to late night: Drinks, Dinner or Feel free to go home.
Culture War: "Go to Ya'nan" & "On the Phenomenology of Giant Puppets" (Graeber)
"In those exploratory early years, cultural organisations of all kinds were formed, merged, re-named, and dissolved. Artistic and literary groups were set up in factories, schools, military units, and rural bases. Street poetry groups were established, with one collective’s manifesto stating, ‘do not let a single wall in the countryside or a single rock by the side of the road lie free and empty… Write… Sing – for the resistance, for the nation, for the masses’. Theatre troupes, which emerged earlier in the 1930s as a powerful force in the resistance to Japanese imperialism, were particularly well received by a largely illiterate rural population. They were able to orally and accessibly communicate the most urgent problems of the day, explain the communist programme, serve as counter-propaganda, and, most importantly, win the confidence of the people."
Welcome back readers! This time we're in for double trouble with two fairly short readings taken together. In this special LMRG meeting, we're asking ourselves some important, occasionally uncomfortable questions about aesthetics and politics - a combo which, if you ask certain Marxists like Walter Benjamin, could equal fascism. That's right, we're talking about art, culture, and the strange power of myth, symbolism, imagery and the imagination.
Wait! Stop! Isn't this anti-materialist? Don't fundamental economic forces shape everything, and shouldn't our political activity focus on educating workers as to that fact? Aren't we getting dangerously close to [Sorelianism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorelianism#Individualism_and_myth) and idealism with all this? Isn't it a slippery slope to ["God-building"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God-Building)?
In asking these questions I'm obviously putting words in the mouth of a rather unfair caricature of a fusty old-minded Marxist. As we'll see with our two readings, politics and cultural practice go together hand-in-glove, at least philosophically. Gramsci's thought on these subjects is well-known, and has been adapted far and wide, [including on the extreme right.](https://jacobin.com/2025/03/right-gramsci-de-benoist-trump) Even the Fabian Society, founders of Labourism, got their start with a little outfit called the [Leeds Arts Club.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_Arts_Club)
Our two pieces demonstrate this from two very opposed ends of the left spectrum, from the strident Marxism-Leninism of the Tricontinental Institue with their dossier on the Ya'nan Soviet's 1942 [Forum on Literature and Art](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan%27an_Forum) (chaired by Mao Z) on the one hand and the late, great anarchist anthropologist David Graeber's *On the Phenomenology of Giant Puppets* on the other.
Find them here:
https://files.libcom.org/files/puppets.pdf
https://thetricontinental.org/dossier-yanan-forum/
Both essays detail the concrete practices and theoretical underpinnings of two distinct movements: education, propaganda and mass mobilisation during China's Civil War and Anti-Japanese War, and the street theatre tactics of the 2000s-era alter-globalisation movement, respectively. Graeber's essay details the now only partly-remembered practices of building and fielding "giant puppets" - floats, papier-mache beasts, large-scale imaginative constructions, etc - and asks the question of why they seemed to have such a hold on the minds of the police from Seattle to Milan. Forget homo sapiens - [homo ludens](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_Ludens#) needs to play to learn.
Both will be starting-points for what will no doubt be a wide-ranging discussion on the topic of how art, culture and symbolism fit into anti-capitalist political practice. We'll ask where we stand today on the left in the Englishs-speaking world with regards to these matters, what we can learn from the past, and what we might do going forward.
Take care and happy reading!

*Thirst* explores humanity’s ancient, urgent and intimate relationship with freshwater.
With only 3% of the world’s water being freshwater, this exhibition dives into how our bodies, communities and ecosystems depend on this precious resource, and what happens when we mismanage it.
Travelling from ancient Mesopotamia to Victorian London, and from Nepal to Singapore, Thirst brings together 125 fascinating objects, including historical artefacts, contemporary materials, environmental data, and artworks.
Expect:
💧 Exquisite medieval water-filtering vessels carved with animals and inscribed with words of wisdom
💧 A Mesopotamian wedding blanket whose floral patterns reappear in a modern wastewater garden design
💧 Atmospheric photographs and films revealing communities’ relationships with water
💧 Striking large-scale models showing the impact of groundwater depletion in global megacities
Immerse yourself in a sweeping story of culture, climate, health and survival, and our shared future.

Solopreneurs Drinking Coffee — First Event
First attempt at this. If it's good, we'll do it again. If it sucks, we tried.
(Event photo is from a recent trip to Flagstaff. Stock photos of fake people drinking coffee are the worst.)
**Why I'm doing this:**
You're the average of the people you spend the most time with. Running a business solo means I've been spending most of my time with myself. And AI tools, which are great for thinking through business problems, but terrible for actual human connection.
I want to raise that average. Looking for people who want real conversations. Not networking, not pitches, just the kind of talk that makes you think differently about what you're building and why.
If we all end up making a few friends along the way, even better.
**What to expect:**
Coffee. Conversation. No pitches, no elevator speeches, no going around the table introducing ourselves like it's a corporate icebreaker.
Just show up and talk like a normal human.
**Ground rules:**
* No pitching your business
* No recruiting
* No MLM talk
* No hustle porn
**RSVP cap:** 6 people max so it doesn't turn into a crowd.
**Location:** Transcend Coffee & Roastery in Grove City
**Time:** Friday, January 16th at 11 AM.
See you there!

Come join us for an enlightening evening of language, culture, food, of course, and connections!

Humanist Program
Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below:
Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
