The Sheep Detectives
Hi all,
This week's film, The Sheep Detectives, will be screening at 6:40pm in cinema 6. I was sceptical of the idea of putting a wolverine in charge of a flock of sheep but the trailer allayed my fears.
Lisa will be hosting and will be in the usual meeting spot [read on for details] from 6:30pm.
Cheers!
**--=>+ Meeting Spot +<=--**
Outside the clothing store Black Orange. It is inside Lygon Court next to Brunettis. Join the group at the meeting spot 10 minutes before the start time or see us in the movie.
**--=>+ The Film +<=--**
In this irresistably witty mystery, shepherd George (Hugh Jackman) reads detective novels to his beloved flock every night, assuming they couldn't possibly understand him. But, when a mysterious incident upends life on George's farm, the sheep realise they must solve the crime. Summoning the knowledge they've learned from listening to George's stories, the animals begin to investigate their human suspects.
Starring Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine and Hong Chau, THE SHEEP DETECTIVES features the voice talents of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Brett Goldstein, Patrick Stewart and Chris O'Dowd.
**--=>+ Tickets +<=--**
Everyone will need to buy their own ticket online and in advance. If you want to sit with other group members, there's a tendency for us to pick seats in the back two rows. Those who feel comfortable can catch up in Nova's bar afterward.
**--=>+ Afterwards+<=--**
We meet in Nova's bar after the movie. Look for us in the area to the left as you go down the steps. Share your thoughts about the film with the group over a drink of your choice.
If the bar is closed we typically head across the road to the Wolf's Lair which is out the back of Jimmy Watson's.

Brunswick Scottish Party and Dance - BYO drinks etc
Please Note: Due to renovations of our normal hall we have a new place for December and the first 6 months of 2022. This is a smaller hall so numbers are limited.
A ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a night of traditional Scottish dancing. Join with the Brunswick Scottish Society and learn how to do fun dances, and have some BYO drinks. Don't worry if you don't know how to dance -- the lovely people will teach you. This is the best $5 night you'll ever have!
This is like a big party in a hall with BYO drinks, BYO glass/cup, BYO food and lots of Scottish Dancing. Most of the dances are like square dances with everyone being told or shown what to do. A few of the dances are similar to those done at ballroom places such as the Pride of Erin Waltz, Parma Waltz, Charmain Foxtrot or Evening 3 Step. Don't worry if you don't know any, they teach you.
It finishes early, about 11pm, which is good as it's cheap drinks (BYO) you are probably best to use Public Transport. The 96 Tram gets you back to the CBD quite quickly. Some of us pop around the corner after and go to the Lomond Hotel on Nicholson St. The Lomond Hotel normally has a good band and dancing with free entry. Note: The number 96 tram just outside the hotel is one of the trams that is now running all night.
It is a family event so you can bring children who might enjoy learning to dance. There can be six or seven other children there or there may be none.
FAQ:
COST: $5 tickets at the door
TIME: 7:45pm for an 8pm start
LOCATION: 21 Harding St, Coburg VIC 3058
Note our normal hall is under renovation. Please don't go to Fleming Park Hall, 104 Victoria St., Brunswick East (the building just east of the Brunswick Bowls Club - 96 tram, stop #26. Note: If you end up at the tram terminus you have gone one stop too far.
FOOD: Normally we bring food for a shared dinner - such as pasta, a salad, or cupcakes. Due to covid we are currently not having a shared dinner but you can bring snacks for yourself or immediate group at your table.
DRINKS: bring your own + bring glasses/cups
WEAR: plaid/tartan if you have it. It's not required, it's just way more fun!
AFTER: drinks at the Lomond Hotel on Nicholson
Note: This is being placed on a number of meetup groups and similar. We feel that having around 50 people dancing is quite good for this hall but previously had months with it going towards double this. Consequently we're now setting maximum RSVP numbers with the maximum being shared between groups. We monitor the total RSVPs over all groups and when we get enough people we cut off each group's maximum so that further RSVPs go onto wait lists.
Estuary on Affect and Music
**Music Soothes the Savage Beast**
How do we measure the affect of a person and their work on people?
How did Mozart affect his generation and future generations?
What is Elvis’ affect?
Why is Taylor Swift so popular?
**1\. Music and affect**
Read part of the article by Reimer.
“When I was sixteen, a junior in high school in Brooklyn, I auditioned for the City High School Band of New York and was placed as first chair clarinet. First rehearsal, a piece we played (I don't remember what it was except that it was new to me) had a long, melodic clarinet solo, with accompaniment. When we finished playing it the director stopped the band and said, "Very nice, first clarinet. Let's do it again, this time with more feeling."

1. What does it mean to “Play with Feeling”?
2. Which music has moved you? Was it how it was played, the person playing it or the music itself?
3. What sort of emotion did you feel when moved by music, can you label the emotion?
**2\. Mozart and Affect**

0:00- 3:00 - 7:20- end
1. What were your impressions of the person of Mozart versus the music of Mozart?
2. What emotions were present in the room?
3. What context did knowing that Salieri was the court composer and the king himself playing the music have on the affect/feeling in the room?
**3\. Theories of The “Mozart Effect” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLASrOujkGw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLASrOujkGw)**
a) Why do you think people thought Mozart made people smarter?
b) Has music ever contributed to better study or cognitive effects for you?
c) Why do we feel that classical music is more “virtuous” than pop or rock music?

**5.b Article**
“We’re in a log cabin replete with open fire, the kind of warm Romantic environment
where one imagines Thoreau writing into the evening. On the wall hangs a faded portrait
beside an oil painting of a rustic country cottage. It’s early in the morning, or late at night,
and a singer, wearing what appears to be an antebellum nightdress, is serenading us on
a battered old piano, before suddenly she opens the top of the instrument and climbs in,
all the time enveloped in an enchanted golden powder. She reappears in a mythic forest
imbued with vivid green hues and vibrant, saturated moss. We’re watching the music
video for Taylor Swift’s first single “cardigan,” from her 2020 album folklore.1 Like Lewis
Carrol’s Alice or the children in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia, Swift opens the piano lid and enters
another world (Figure 1). The fantastical folkloric quality of this setting in the Arcadian
woods, what Vernallis would call the “implied geography of the video” (258), is reinforced by emotive lighting and majestic waterfalls (Figure 2). Next, the piano stool acts as a portal, transporting Swift to sea, the instrument itself acting as life raft in a scene not unlike one from James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), before finally taking her home. The drenched protagonist comforts herself with the eponymous cardigan upon her return, in a significant teleological moment of audio-visual synchronization (Figure 3). What is being mediated here? Why this turn to folklore and indie-folk esthetics in Swift’s work? I suggest that this single and, indeed, the album folklore provide a peak example of a societal search for foundations during the pandemic”.
McGrath, J. (2023). The Return to Craft: Taylor Swift, Nostalgia, and Covid-19. *Popular Music and Society*, 46(1), 70–84. [https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2022.2156761](https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2022.2156761)
1. What is Swift evoking in her video? Do you agree with McGrath that she's evoking a sense of a more magical world?
2. Why do you think this song had such an impact during the pandemic?
3. Does Swift remind you of other artists or evoke another time that's nostalgic to you?

What is your favourite music?
Do you use music to soothe yourself or psyche yourself up to anything?

Jules and Jim, the Book!
By popular demand, the group wanted to read and discuss the semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roche, that inspired the Truffaut movie we watched last year.
The book is available through the Columbus Library's interlibrary loan system. They reported there are twenty-eight copies available in the state of Ohio. If you have a library card, you can file an interlibrary loan request here: https://www.columbuslibrary.org/library-services/ . There are also used copies available on Amazon and eBay for under twenty dollars.
You may want to rewatch the movie after reading the book, so we can compare and contrast in our discussion. The Columbus Library has four copies on DVD, and it's streaming on HBOMax.
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish
IMPORTANT INFO: I strongly suggest not reading anything about it online before seeing it. It's best viewed with no previous knowledge. This documentary contains crude terminology and deals with cyberbullying, which may be a trigger for some folks.
AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT EVEN READ ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU SEE IT.
A very unusual choice for his group... Unknown Number: High School Catfish is an American [true crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_crime "True crime") documentary film directed by [Skye Borgman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skye_Borgman "Skye Borgman") and released to [streaming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media "Streaming media") on [Netflix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix "Netflix") on August 29, 2025.
The documentary explores the events and investigation into an unknown person [cyberbully](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberbullying "Cyberbullying") and [harassing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harassment "Harassment") teenagers in [Beal City, Michigan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beal_City,_Michigan "Beal City, Michigan") using an unknown number via insults and sexual claims. It also explores the increasingly great impact of the harassment on the community, the eventual reveal of the culprit, and the trial that followed.
Please be ready to discuss the movie by 7PM. We suggest arriving early enough to order and get food beforehand. Thanks.
Unfortunately, it is only available on Netflix. If you would like to attend but do not have Netflix, say so and maybe we can figure something out.

CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1
week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to all of YOU for volunteering at this (and any of our previous) CMG Gives Back events!
Should be another good/fun/meaningful time together, Dan
