š **About Your Host - Matt**
I work as a doctor in A&E and Iāve always found that time spent outdoors helps me recharge, especially with the pressures of city life and work. I grew up in rural Devon and have spent thousands of hours immersed in nature - and I love showing others how even a short walk can shift your mindset, boost your mood, and help you feel more present.
No need to be a wildlife expert ā Iāll point out birds and other wildlife along the way, and youāll leave with a few simple tips to help you enjoy your own walks even more in future.
This is a welcoming group ā whether you come solo or with a friend ā and a great way to combine light exercise, real conversation, and a bit of calm in your week.
**Hope to see you there!**

š„¾ **Hike Description**
This is Outdooraholicsā most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs formed at the end of the last Ice Age by glacial meltwater. Erosion has since created an āeighth sister,ā and today the cliffs stand as one of Englandās most iconic landscapes.
We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.
Our route follows the **South Downs Way**, passing through **Birling Gap** and past the striking **Belle Tout Lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.
We finish in **Eastbourne**, statistically Englandās sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

There are sheer drops off the cliffs and some of these soft chalk cliffs are crumbling at the edges with chunks regularly falling and no fencing in place. Please keep at least 3 metres away from the edges. If you fall, or the ground at the edge of the cliff collapses it will almost certainly be fatal.

A very picturesque route from Burgess Hill via Ditchling Beacon to Brighton.
Ditchling Beacon commands a place as the third highest point on the South Downs at 814ft (American designations define a mountain as 1000ft!, getting close) with panoramic views, because of its defensive position it was also the site of an early Iron Age Hill fort.

We pass Brighton station on the way to the seaside and at Brighton you have the option of seeing the seaside, shopping or having a social drink and maybe having a swim!

Seven Sisters the Britannia way- (14 or 18 miles)
On William Camden's birthday in 1551, this walk to hikers' favourite Seven Sisters adopts a course from his chorography of this country *Britannia:*
*"From Lewes, passing by a large lake well-fill'd with fish, near Furle, the seat of the Gages (who, advancing their estate by marriage with one of the heirs of the house of St. Clare, became a Family of good note) we come to Cuckmer, a pretty good Harbour. Then, having pass'd the promontory, call'd from the beach, Beachy."*
The ancient town of Alfriston will have thrived in Camden's day. Perhaps he visited the 15th-C *Star* one of England's oldest inns with its magnificent carved woodwork. Look out also for the remains of the medieval market cross, and 14th-C Priests' House.
Then we'll enjoy Seven Sisters sights, and Birling Gap with its beach.
Two options for finishing: Inland from Birling Gap is East Dean from where a regular £3 bus will take you to Eastbourne - 14 miles. Or continue along the coast to Eastbourne is 18 miles for those wanting a longer walk.
16th-C antiquarian, writer and traveller for inspiration beats AI any day š

Ivinghoe Beacon Trail - Saturday 2 May
Join us as we head to the Chilterns where we will explore fields and forests on our way to the high point of Ivinghoe Beacon. With views stretching as far as the English Midlands, the beacon lit here provided, over the centuries, speedy communication across the country in times of crisis. The beauty of the area is such that in the 1960s it was frequently used as an outdoor location for action-adventure television shows including 'The Avengers' and 'The Saint'.
Our hike will take us along the Ridgeway, a trail located at the top of the steep scarp slope of the Chilterns that has been in use since the stone age. Along the way we shall find Grim's Ditch, an ancient fortification dating back to before the arrival of Romans.
On our return we shall pass by the Bridgewater Monument, built in honour of a duke whose Lancashire canal was the earliest of its kind and made him the richest noble in the country.
We will also walk through the woods of the Ashridge Estate, famed for having some of the largest displays of bluebells anywhere in the south of England.
**Meeting place**: Euston Railway Station - in the centre of the station, in front of the outlets marked as 12-13-14 on the station map - see the following link: [CCS0723844574-001_London Euston Map 2023](https://assets.nationalrail.co.uk/e8xgegruud3g/5gcSgkwWx5WJL0KctzneMM/e1d2ccd9465097ce5bfb391a5c33d19a/CCS0723844574-001_London_Euston_Map_2023v3.pdf) It's not far from platforms 7 and 8.

LONDON: Nature Sketching & Wander in the Lee Valley
Join Hannah, Rob and London Wildish Club as we head out into the Lee Valley Regional Park, a 26-mile corridor of waterways, wetlands and open space stretching from the Thames all the way up into Hertfordshire.
We'll start and finish at Cheshunt Station, crossing straight into the River Lee Country Park and its lakes, wetlands, locks and big skies. May is a lovely time to do it; hopefully we'll see nesting birds, hawthorn coming into blossom and the reed beds waking up.
Along the way we'll stop for 20-30 minutes to have a go at sketching. We'll find a comfortable spot by the water, pick a natural focus point (a reed bed, a lock, a heron if we're lucky) and take a slower, closer look at what's around us before gathering to share and heading on.
No artistic experience is needed, and no one will be judging your heron. The point is the looking, not the drawing.
This is a slightly longer wander at 10.3 km, but genuinely easy going with barely any elevation. [See the route here.](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/custom-route-c977093?u=m&sh=pv1y6m)
Optional toilet breaks should be available at two points along the route. There are no cafƩs on the walk itself, but there are pubs nearby the station if you fancy something afterwards, and we welcome members of the group suggesting somewhere to head after the walk.
**PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVPs AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IF YOU CAN NO LONGER ATTEND.**
Any questions, just give us a shout.
**What to Bring**
* A pencil to sketch with ā some spares will be available, and small pieces of card will be provided to sketch on
* Comfortable walking shoes or trainers (paths are well-surfaced but can be muddy near the water)
* A light layer, as May can still surprise you
* Water + snacks
* Binoculars if you have them, genuinely worth it here
* A dog friend, if you have one
**Route Info**
* Circular route, starting and finishing at Cheshunt Station ([https://share.google/HiRebm6USByDXXU2l](https://share.google/HiRebm6USByDXXU2l)) (what3words[///toned.notion.clouds](https://w3w.co/toned.notion.clouds))
* We'll meet at 13:15 for a hard start at 13:30 ā please do try to be on time. We'll share our live location via the WhatsApp group on the day.
* Distance: 10.3 km / 6.4 miles
* Duration: approx. 2 hrs 30 mins (steady pace, plus sketching stop)
* We'll walk rain or shine ā come prepared š¦ļø
**Getting There:**
Cheshunt is on the Liverpool Street to Hertford East line, around 30 minutes direct. Check your journey before you travel as weekend services can vary.
