**š£ļø Jacob Wang: A comprehensive tour of error handling in Scala**
Errors are part of life - But how best to work with them in our code?
In this talk, I'll take you on a tour of various typed error handling approaches within the Scala ecosystem,
as well introduce a new one for cats/cats-effect ecosystem!
ā Jacob Wang ā
Jacob has been writing Scala for close to 10 years. He enjoys creating programs that mostly
behave, as well as sharing this joy via open source & teaching.
**š£ļø Jack Higgs: Starship Enterprise: Functional Programming at Huge Companies**
Practicing functional programming inside a Fortune 100 enterprise can feel like flying the Starship Enterprise through asteroid fields of legacy code and bureaucracy. This talk shares hard-earned lessons from the Information Engineering team at JPMorganChase, which runs a production Scala codebase powering a novel metadata platform. We'll explore the political, cultural, and technical friction of pushing functional programming in a Java and Python dominated environment. We'll introduce the domain we work in, the techniques that have worked (and those that haven't), the compromises we've made, and why - despite it all - we still think it's worth it. If you've never tried to run cats-effect in a place where Spring Boot is king, add this talk to your battle log.
ā Jack Higgs ā
Jack Higgs is a technologist with fifteen years of experience in investment banking, including the past decade at JPMorganChase. He leads teams building metadata platforms using Scala and functional programming techniques. Over the past six years, Jack has worked at the intersection of software engineering, data architecture, and large-scale enterprise systems. Passionate about type safety, functional design, and making abstract ideas practical, he thrives on applying elegant code in messy real-world environments.

7:00 PM: Why it's worth implementing passkeys in Android - even though it's hard! by Tom Colvin
With passkeys, you can secure user data with your phone's fingerprint scanner, facial recognition or screen lock. No more passwords or third-party auth!
In this talk, I hope to convince you that passkeys are worth implementing in your app, even though it's hard to do so. And I will demonstrate how to do that in Android.
You will learn:
- Why user behaviour makes passwords insecure
- How passkeys solve this, by being inherently immune to phishing, credential stuffing and data breaches
- How to authenticate users using passkeys in Android using Jetpack Credential Manager

Woodland Cacao with Mantras, chants & Flame ritual (for Shivarathri)
Join us for the first of our Cacao circles of this new year 2026. We begin witrh a very auspicious Shivarathri themed Ceremony! We gather on Friday the 13th February, for this special event.
* *\*We are using Organic, Vegan, Ceremonial grade Cacao, grown by the Ashaninka Tribe in Peru\**
* **Spaces strictly limited - please use our eventbrite link to book spaces. Thank you.**
This Cacao circle will have all our usual ceremonial aspects - smudging & purifying our selves and altar area, then each person adding a spoon of ritual grade Cacao to vegan-friendly milk - speaking positive intentions for eco-magic. While cacao is heating up, we drum, dance, chant, and movement around the cooker/ cacao, as we raise energy. Then Cacao shared out and drunk by each person.
**Cacao drinking in a ritual circle.**
It is an old tribal practice that works gently in heartcentre and energy openings in people. It takes time to work. It's effects are subtle, and can include a good feeling of wellness, connection, love, gratitude, mindfullness, positivity. So starting with groundedness, stillness, and balance is importrant in order to feel its effects.
**Flame ritual & Mantra Meditation** -
we commence with personal chakra opening with their relevant mantras. A small ceremonial fire is created in a container representing the Infite Flame of Lord Shiva. While listeining to 108 mantra chants music, we offer flowers & herbs to the flame of Shiva, while silently meditating.. (or inwadly chanting the same mantra). . .
**Mantras to be used / listened**
* Shiva Mantra - "Om Nama Shivaya "
* Chakra mantras **-** Lam (root), Vam (sacral) Ram (Solar), Yam (heart), Ham (throat), Om (throat), Aum (crown- or silent Om)
**Candle magic**-
while people are seated and allowing the Cacaco to work, the myth of Shivarathri will be told. Following this, each person lights their own candle (provided) from the central Flame. These candles are for people to take home, to light when they are in need of this magic.
No experience necessary. You will be fully guided in this adapted Hindu-pagan ceremony, facilitated by Mani.
