The Sonnets: The Dark Lady poems: (Discussion)
The Sonnets: The Dark Lady poems: (Discussion)
Come and idle away the winter months with **Shakespeare’s Sonnets**! It’s never too late to discover, or rediscover just how dazzling, intimate, and endlessly surprising Shakespeare’s incredible body of 154 sonnets can be. Over the next three months, we’ll wander through some of the most beautiful, piercing, and emotionally complex poems ever written. Think of it as falling in love with Shakespeare all over again one cluster of sonnets at a time. **In March:** We enter the world of the late sonnets; the so-called “*Dark Lady*” poems, where passion becomes more complicated, desire grows knotted and sharp, and Shakespeare confronts the darker edges of sexuality and self-knowledge. These poems are bold, unsettling, and unforgettable. **Our cluster**: Sonnets 127–152 (the full Dark Lady sequence), with optional additions of 129 (“Th’ expense of spirit in a waste of shame”) and 138 (“When my love swears that she is made of truth”) for special discussion. Across the winter, we’ll read, explore, puzzle over, and simply enjoy these poems together tracing how Shakespeare moves from youthful radiance to emotional turmoil to the shadowy brilliance of his final sonnets. Hope you will make it! Maryama Antoine

Books & Coffee: Passion as a Choice
Books & Coffee: Passion as a Choice
This book club event's theme is about art, writing, and one's passion to create! It encompasses a lot of literature surrounding *Writing, Artistic Passion, and the cost of an artistic life.* Many questions can be addressed, amongst them: \- What is it to write\, to create? \- Whether to make the choice to follow our passion and our calling\. \- What would be the cost of such a choice? \- How do artists navigate through life? \- What does it mean to write? This is a themed book club with no required reading! This topic is a wide topic and can include many books that relate to the theme, or explore ambition, creativity, purpose, or the tension between desire and duty, etc. Bring your favorite book(s) that feel close to the topic and discuss your reflections, favorite quotes, and engage in cozy conversations. (You’re also welcome to bring a physical copy for our group book photo tradition.✹📖📚) If you would like to take reference, here are some suggested books that would fit within this topic: – *Letters to a Young Poet* by Rainer Maria Rilke – *A Room of One’s Own* by Virginia Woolf – *Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man* by James Joyce – *The Cost of Living* by Deborah Levy – *Just Kids* by Patti Smith – *The Writing Life* by Annie Dillard – *On Writing* by Stephen King – *Big Magic* by Elizabeth Gilbert – *The Artist’s Way* by Julia Cameron (And you can refer to many more!) P.S. I’ll reach out before the event to confirm attendance. Please cancel in advance if plans change so I can adjust the reservation accordingly. Thank you\~

Spring Swap (Books & More)
Spring Swap (Books & More)
Note change in time to 1:30pm. This will be the 4th bookswap and this time it will have a twist. We will be exchanging books/media as well as other gently used items such as clothing, accessories, and boardgames. Please be mindful not to bring any super fancy items or any items you would not be comfortable gifting a friend or neighbor. This is NOT a yard sale. Please only bring items you’d like to give away. Please do not bring your whole closet and please launder any clothing. Please consider donating (locally) any leftover items. If weather is bad, event will be cancelled or rescheduled. So that we can find each other easily, we will meet in front of Cabin John Ice rink entrance at 1:30pm and then move next door to Cabin John Park at around 1:45pm.
Trade Seeds, Question Everything
Trade Seeds, Question Everything
**In a bold departure from our usual articles and short stories, this month we will be exchanging... seeds.** Bring what you’ve saved, thinned, or over-ordered. Trade, collect, compare notes on seed-starting setups, and swap stories about last season’s triumphs and failures. If you don’t have seeds to share, come anyway. You can learn, collect a few, and hang out with people who get genuinely excited about planting things. * Will we accidentally discuss the nature of generosity? Possibly. * Will someone bring up gift economies? Perhaps. * Will you leave with tomato seeds? Very likely. **Where:** This year we’ll be hosting at [Nova Labs](https://www.nova-labs.org/). Nova Labs is a local maker space—a collaborative workshop with tools, equipment, and creative people building everything from art to prototypes. (I'm a new member. It's a fantastic space!) We can mayyybe sneak in an impromptu tour. And if there’s interest, we can grab a drink afterward and keep the conversation—horticultural or otherwise—going. **Optional inspiration:** The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, a short reflection on abundance and reciprocity in the natural world. Read it if you like. Or just come for the squash. **Bring:** Seeds, small envelopes or bags, and something to label your seeds with. And a seedy snack if you feel so moved!
