Backstory Talks: Seth Insua
Backstory Talks: Seth Insua
**[BUY THE BOOK HERE!](https://backstorybookshop.shop/product/8-lives-of-a-century-old-trickster/)** We're thrilled to welcome Seth Insua to Backstory for an evening dedicated to his debut novel *Human, Animal*. This is a rare chance to hear Seth speak about the book, the writing process, and the stories behind it — followed by an open Q&A where the audience leads the conversation. Come with your questions, your thoughts, and your copy to get signed! ### **About the Author** Seth Insua is an Anglo-Spanish writer and artist, born in Kent in 1989. He graduated from the University of Oxford with a First in English Language and Literature. His debut novel *Human, Animal* was published by VERVE Books in 2025 and by Letras de Plata in Spanish the following year. He lives between Newcastle upon Tyne and Madrid. ### **About the Book** Dairy farmer George Calvert is fighting to keep the family business afloat. Resistant to change, he refuses to face the reality of his failing farm, his elderly mother's declining health, and his troubled relationship with his youngest son Tom. Newly returned from university, Tom is quietly guarding the truth of his gender identity. When animal rights activists break into the cowshed and Tom appears to side with the protesters, father and son lock horns — and a decades-old secret begins to surface. *Human, Animal* is a deeply moving story about a family struggling to find connection in a changing world. A BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick with Sara Cox, shortlisted for the inaugural New Adult Book Prize and for Book of the Year at the British Book Awards, it has been praised by Russell T Davies as "beautifully, skilfully told — remarkable, inspirational writing."

Hikoustics con Mike Rauss - Urban Jungle Hike + Música en directo & senderismo
Hikoustics con Mike Rauss - Urban Jungle Hike + Música en directo & senderismo
**A short sunset hike through Barcelona’s wild side, ending with an intimate live concert in nature by Mike Rauss.** *Una ruta corta al atardecer por el lado más salvaje de Barcelona, terminando con un concierto íntimo en la naturaleza de Mike Rauss.* **Ver Castellano abajo**⤵️ Hey music and nature lovers 🌿🎶 Hikoustics is back: a simple but magical Yepalo format where we combine a short hike through Barcelona’s urban jungle with an intimate live music session. ***In short*** * Sunset easy hike + intimate live concert by [Mike Rauss](https://www.instagram.com/mikerauss/) in a secret spot * Duration aprox: 1h30 hike + 1h live show * Distance: aprox 5 km * Elevation gain: aprox 200 m * Difficulty: easy * Price: €16 * Bring: comfortable shoes, water, warm clothes, picnic/snacks, and a blanket or towel, headlamp or phone light. * Book your spot [here](https://www.yepalo.com/events/hikoustics-with-mike-rauss-urban-jungle-hike-live-music) ***About Mike Rauss*** Mike Rauss is a singer, guitarist and songwriter. His music blends folk, funk, flamenco guitar, groove and world music influences, creating something warm, playful, soulful and deeply human. Live, his music feels especially powerful: intimate, rhythmic, improvised, full of feeling and impossible not to smile with. [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/user/mikerauss) [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/mikerauss/) [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/intl-es/artist/15URpU4gE26vY1FCItg5gu) [Deezer](https://www.deezer.com/en/artist/60800782) ***Now the detailed plan!*** We’ll meet in metro Guinardo (L4) in Barcelona and go for a short sunset hike through one of the city’s green, wild and less obvious corners. Think hidden paths, urban hills, nature inside the city, good views, a relaxed group and that peaceful moment when Barcelona starts changing light in the evening. The hike will be easy and accessible, but we’ll still walk on some uneven paths and go slightly up and down, so please wear comfortable shoes. At the end of the hike, we’ll sit down together and enjoy an intimate live concert by Mike Rauss in a secret corner. Bring your picnic, something to drink and a blanket or towel to sit on. This Hikoustics feels extra special for us. We discovered Mike’s music almost by accident on Spotify and instantly fell in love with his universe. Then we saw that one of his live songs had been recorded in Spain and thought: “Wait… maybe this guy plays here sometimes?” A few clicks later, we found out he was playing in El Masnou just two weeks later. So we went. And honestly… the concert was incredible. We met him after the show, became friends, and now we’re super happy to bring this Hikoustics session with someone who, for us, started as a little Spotify discovery and quickly became one of our musical crushes. **PRICE**: €16 Includes: Guided hike Live concert by Mike Rauss Insurance in case of accident + civil liability VAT **How to book your spot?** Step 1. Make the payment on our website: [https://www.yepalo.com/events/hikoustics-with-mike-rauss-urban-jungle-hike-live-music](https://www.yepalo.com/events/hikoustics-with-mike-rauss-urban-jungle-hike-live-music) Step 2. Sign up on meetup Feel free to WhatsApp us if you have any question! No pasa nada. Yepalo +34 699 444 539 Moshe

Coffee Connections
A casual (but coordinated) coffee break to meet new friends, take a Zoom break, and get your AM caffeine fix. Stop by for a few minutes or stay the whole time. Bring a friend or wander in solo. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop! Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs.

Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!

Our June read is ***Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible*** ***Voyage*** **by Alfred Lansing.** A work of nonfiction, and one of the most astonishing survival stories in history, we follow Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew after their ship is crushed by Antarctic ice. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the men endure months of isolation, freezing temperatures, and near starvation—yet refuse to give up hope. Lansing brings their ordeal to life through vivid detail and firsthand accounts, capturing both the brutality of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the story is a powerful testament to leadership, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to survive against impossible odds. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **all** **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! 📖
