**This jovial jaunt is a** **paved** **3.8mile mostly easy walk with some hidden hills & full of stairs (270 in total). Pace: 3mph.** The trek traverses embassies as well as academic campuses in D.C.'s Van Ness neighborhood... *Can you enumerate all the embassies?* The walk first frolics about the University of D.C. (UDC) with an 'amphitheater ascent' that leads to the [Henderson Sports complex](https://www.udcfirebirds.com/general/2021-22/releases/20220219d185lb), which was named after the "Father of Black Basketball". The circuit then embraces enigmatic embassies that are collectively known as the International Chancery Center [(ICC)](https://www.state.gov/international-chancery-center/). After ambling through alleys the trek pauses parallel to International Park. Latter of the circuit descends a snaky staircase then creeps by an eerie alley of eyes before encircling new & old Howard University (HU) School of Law buildings, including a Kennedy Center look-a-like known as the [Allen Mercer Daniel Library](https://www.tumblr.com/dcsojourn/137654182949/howard-universitys-bizarre-abandoned-allen); enjoy a vacuous vista of D.C. here. Join us for a training walk on the WO&D. For this initial walk, we'll strive to maintain a 20-21 minute mile pace. The goal is to begin ramping up in order to maintain a 16 minute mile pace with minimal stopping for 90 minutes. **Meeting Time & Location:** Meet us at 6:30 PM near Isaac Newtown square. We'll start at mile marker 17. **Distance:** 4-4.2 miles for this session. **Elevation Gain:** minimal **Difficulty:** slight elevation on paved paths. **Estimated Duration** This hike is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours. **Pace:** Brisk (but not powerwalk) Pace We'll walk a brisk pace, but as this is a training walk, we'll make sure people don't fall too far behind. **Parking** Park in the park and ride parking lot. **Dog Attendance** For everyone’s comfort and enjoyment, we kindly ask that you leave your dogs at home for this hike. Thirsty Thursday is about trying a solid Medium Level ("B" group) ride in an encouraging, structured environment. We welcome strong Beginner Level riders that are willing to push themselves to become better cyclists. This is a NO DROP ride so you will not be left behind but you are expected to really try to keep pace. The lead will go no more than 16mph and other organizers/helpers will attempt to "fill the gaps" as we ride. This is a mostly flat ride from Jones Point to Fort Hunt. Of course the "price of admission" for this ride is a hill that presents itself as soon as we enter the neighborhood across the GW Parkway... we have named it "The PUNISHER". If you successfully climb that hill, you are officially a CBG "B" group rider. Once we get to Fort Hunt we will do laps (or you can rest) for a bit before heading back the way we came. If you normally ride faster than 15mph you are welcome to practice your "keeping pace" skills. Come join other guys in their 20s and 30s for a friendly group run. This run is not competitive and all skill levels are welcome. See the pin below. Parking at the mall is only $1.00 after 6:00 PM. Next Sunday the 28th we’ll walk from the Dupont Circle Metro Q Street exit west to the Rock Creek Park Trail, where we will proceed northbound to Peirce Mill, where restrooms and water will be available. We will then proceed northbound on the Valley Trail (a dirt trail) to West Beach Drive and use that to access North Portal Drive. At 16th Street we will walk into Montgomery County and take Colesville Road to 2nd Avenue near the Silver Spring Metro, the official end point for our 9,5 mile hike. Optional beers/pub food will be available at the Silver Branch Lagerhaus & Biergarten at 8401 Georgia Avenue, the corner of 2nd Avenue. C&O Canal at Big Slackwater Hike
The Big Slackwater section of the C&O Canal south of Williamsport, MD was completely closed for more than 20 years because the towpath, squeezed into an incredibly narrow corridor between the Potomac on one side and high cliffs on the other, got flooded out once too often. This section has reopened after a $15 million restoration project that should solve the flooding problem. Starting from the Canal's Dam #4, we will head upstream and soon reach the inlet lock that marks the lower end of the Big Slackwater section. The next few miles should be both unusually scenic and unusually interesting as we admire the sturdily-rebuilt towpath beneath our feet. We continue past quaint McMahon Mill and Howell Cave (no relation that we know of) to Lock 41, where the Canal as we usually think of it resumes, with a prism and berm as well as the towpath. Total length of our easy stroll is about 8 miles. Bring beverages, lunch, and about $15 for transportation and trip fees. We'll meet and form carpools from the Grosvenor-Strathmore metro station at 9am. RSVPs close at 8pm the day before to allow for logistical planning. The water lilies and lotuses are blooming at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens! Let's explore the gardens and go for a walk on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail! ❶ **What we'll do:** * From 9 to 10 am we'll do about 2 miles of unstructured wandering around LBJ Memorial Pond to enjoy and photograph the aquatic plants and the boardwalks to the west. If you arrive later, which is fine, just come on in and join us in the gardens! * At 10 am, we'll reconvene in front of the Visitor Center and go for a 1.9-mile walk on the Anacostia River and back along the Anacostia River Trail. The River Trail is paved and fairly level. * The total walk is about 4 miles. If you like to sleep in on Sunday mornings, this magnificent hike at Catoctin Mountain Park close to Camp David in Thurmont, MD is for you. Our moderate-to-strenuous 8.5-mile circuit with 1370 ft. in elevation gain includes some spectacular views and attractions. Some of the sights we’ll enjoy along the way include Cunningham Falls (highest in Maryland), Hog Rock overlook, Blue Ridge vista, Thurmont vista, the Wolf Rock formation, and the Chimney Rock overlook. Meet at the Grovesnor-Strathmore Metro station by 1:30 p.m. and please answer the Meetup questions so we can organize carpools. Bring snacks, beverages, sunscreen, bug spray, sturdy hiking boots, the $5 Adventuring fee, and $10 to reimburse your carpool driver. We'll make a stop at Sheetz on our drive up.
