Mountain Skills 1 Course
Mountain Skills 1 Course
***Mountain Skills for Only €120 / course*** Ever wanted to learn the skills you need to become a competent navigator in the Irish mountains, the UK, the Alps or beyond! As a fully qualified mountain guide and course provider for Mountaineering Ireland and the UK, I run Mountain Skills which is a nationally accredited course and is delivered in an upland environment. Hiking in Ireland can be challenging not only because of its wilderness, but the island has very little sign posted hiking trails in the mountains or hills. In addition to this, as being an island in the Atlantic we experience the forces of nature; storms and weather events. In other words, Ireland is probably the best place in Europe to learn a new outdoor skill like Mountain Skills. The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to get out hiking in the hills and mountains independently, safely and responsibly. You will learn how to navigate with confidence by any type of weather conditions. A Mountain Skills course is run over 2 days in an upland environment and covers: Map reading, map description, map scale, contour lines, land and ground features, navigation legs, simple navigation techniques, setting the map, the 5 D, estimation of direction & destination, grid reference, mountain hazards, hypothermia, mountain environment, timing, pacing, route planning, route card, emergency procedures, personal equipment, safe movement skills, river crossing and much more… Some level of fitness is essential in taking part in this course. Each course (MS1 / MS2) is a 20 hour syllabus which includes indoor and outdoor sessions and night navigation (MS2) **A course includes:** Maps and compass provided, tea breaks, course notes, 3 route cards, a free hiking day practice as part of a weekend. **For Only €100 for under 18 and students and €120 for adults.** Accommodations can be provided Her are few additionnal dates: Jan 24-25 MS2 Glenmalure, Co.Wicklow Feb 11-12 MS1 Comeragh, Co.Waterford March 21-22 Glenmalure, Co. Ward River Valley and Swords Castle walk
Ward River Valley and Swords Castle walk
On Sunday 19th April we shall have a walk in the Ward River Valley to Swords Castle. **Meeting Location** Swords Express bus stop on Eden Quay which is next to stop 135351 and Meaghers Pub. From O'Connell St head towards the River Liffey and when you get to the river, turn left. The bus stop is a short distance on the left hand side. The Swords Express bus takes Leap Cards (please ensure you have enough credit) and is scheduled to depart at 10:45. If it's easier for you to catch a different bus to the walk's starting point then please let the organisers know. **Route Description** From the meeting point on Eden Quay we will take the Swords Express bus to near the Windmill Lands area of Swords from there we walk through the park and along the Ward River into Swords itself to see the historic round tower of St Columba's Church, the holy well and the lovely Swords Castle. The distance is approximately 5km. There will be time to look round the castle which is free to visit. After maybe a cup of tea or a pint of beer, we will take the bus back into Dublin. Or alternatively if people wish, we could have a further walk to Malahide Station via the lovely Malahide Estuary. This is approximately a further 5.5km. Some paths can be a little muddy, but the chosen route should avoid the worst sections. If it's dry and warm enough, we'll probably have a picnic in the park. There are no shops on the walk, but there are many shops, cafés and pubs in Swords itself. \*\*\* If you wish to wander off during a break then it's probably OK but please agree with the organisers a time you'll return so we're not waiting for you \*\*\* We hope to see you there! Feel free to come on the walk even if you haven't been to a meet up before. This is a great way to meet new people and see new places. **\*\*\* Important, please click on Attend if you wish to join this event. If you can no longer make it then please change your RSVP or send a message. Don't be a no-show - the organisers reserve the right to remove people from the group who have multiple no-shows. \*\*\*** Host: Tim (085 718 5658) On the day of the event, if you need to contact the organiser then please send a WhatsApp message is the best way. Before the day you can send a message via Whatsapp or leave a message below. FAQs 1. Is there a charge for this event? No, this is a free event. Sometimes we have events that involve a visit to a museum or garden with an entrance fee - but this will be clearly marked in the details 2. Is it OK for people on a short visit to Ireland to join this walk? Yes both visitors and residents alike are welcome to join our walks. 3. How easy/difficult is this walk? Most walking groups would classify this as an easy walk, but having a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. 4. Why are there only a limited number of places for this event? To ensure the best possible experience for the people attending it is necessary to limit the numbers, especially as the chosen route may not be straightforward and along narrow paths. 5. Why is it necessary to book on this event if you wish to attend? This is because there are only a limited number of spaces (see point above) and to ensure the fairest allocation of spaces, we kindly request everyone to book a place. It's OK to change your mind about coming but please change your RSVP as soon as you have for someone else to take the place if they wish to. PLEASE NOTE: Walking like many outdoor activities carries an element of risk. People who take part in our meet up activities do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own actions and involvement. If you register to join our meet up walks you agree that you wish to take part in the activities despite these risks. Please wear boots, shoes or runners that you find comfortable, provide suitable support and have good grip as some of the paths may be uneven or steep. It is also recommended to bring water to avoid dehydration. Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket or umbrella in case of inclement weather. Seapoint on Sunday
Seapoint on Sunday
Join us for a swim at Seapoint on Sunday @ 12p.m. Regulars and newcomers are welcome to join us. You have the option to swim, paddle around and have a chat, or just dip your toes, the choice is yours. We recommend that you don't stay in the water too long as it's still quite cold this time of year, and please stay within your debt - we do look out for each other but we are not lifeguards. And remember to bring warm clothes for after the swim and keep warm, and maybe a hot drink too.. **We meet at the Lifeguard hut on Brightonvale road, or if it's raining we will meet at the shelters.** Afterwards we usually go for a coffee at cafe du journel - join us if you want to, the option is yours. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in! We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind. If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
