Square Tomatoes and Robot Bees - Who decides?
You don't have to sign up-just stop by. Tea, coffee, water, beer, wine, and pizza will be available throughout the evening.
---
--
Most conversations about AI skip the part that is crucial: **who it's built for, who pays for it, and who doesn't get a say**.
âThis evening goes exactly there.
âWe start in 1960s California, where scientists bred a new kind of tomato: square, hard, machine-ready, and wiped out 82% of the state's tomato farms in the process. Farmworkers and small farmers sued the university behind the technology, arguing they were being forced to fund their own replacement. They lost. But the questions they raised never went away.
Today, researchers are using AI, robotics and gene editing to create tomatoes that can be pollinated by robots, crops designed for automated production systems, and even new traits engineered for consumer preferences. AI is having an impact on agriculture, food production, and labour, often with public money, rarely with public input. Sounds familiar?
â**What to expect**
âA 90-minute interactive evening:
* â**Opening talk** connecting the tomato harvester story to today's AI developments
* â**Live audience polling**
* âConversation with **Ildi Carlisle-Cummins** (California Institute for Rural Studies): storyteller, oral historian, and director of the Cal Ag Roots project, one of the organisations that grew out of the original lawsuit
* âOpen audience **discussion**
* â**Informal networking** to close
â**What you'll take away**
âA sharper way to think about who controls the technologies influencing our food, our work, and our world, and what citizens can actually do when change feels inevitable.
If the phrase "square tomato" sounds too strange to be true, you're not alone. Even the TV detective [Mr. Monk couldn't believe his eyes](https://youtu.be/VtO-97pl7cA?is=VnMxtacAwL1IChub)!
**âFree to attend, free of jargon, no expertise required.**
**Just bring your curiosity.**

Reading in Companionable Silence on tour: DomÀne Dahlem (breakfast/farm/museum)
We are coming to DomÀne Dahlem, an organic farm based in a manor house in the heart of Berlin Steglitz-Zehlendorf. It includes a blacksmith's workshop and an agricultural history museum, along with many animals and harvest spots. They also serve a breakfast buffet on weekends and holidays, with 100% organic and farm-to-table food.
And... we have a table booked for a limited amount of people at the Landgasthaus đ
The plan is to enjoy a top-tier breakfast from 10:30 am, catch up on some reading, and then move along the DomÀne, checking the animals, the crops, and the local exhibitions.
Itinerary:
10:30-11 am: We arrive at the Landgasthaus and order from the breakfast buffet. Note that the buffet costs EUR 25 per person, serving all-you-can eat farm-to-table food. Drinks are not included in this price. If you come, make sure to be on time as to avoid missing the buffet window đ
11 am - 12 pm: We sit and read for one hour while enjoying our hearty breakfast.
12:00-12:30 pm: We share our reading impressions.
12:30 - \~15 pm: Optional: We walk around the farm, check out the crops and the animals and/or visit the local museum. Museum tickets cost 5 EUR per person, 3 EUR reduced.
Hope to see you there!
@ Anna Blume - A cozy book swap and chat meetup!
The "classical" bookswap is simple:
* We meet in a café and put the book(s) we brought down on the tables.
* We go around to browse and discuss the books with one another while sipping coffee or hot chocolate, or eating cake.
* We write our names down on any books weâd like to take home (post-its and pens provided).
* At the end of the evening, negotiate any books that are contended and take a new-to-you book home!
Books/happiness shared are books/happiness multiplied! A Bookswap is 10 times better than a Book Club because you can talk about ALL the books instead of just one!
This is a great way to give your books a new home and make room for new books: that book you feel guilty for not having read even though it's been sitting on your bedside table for the last 5 years, the book you liked but didn't love, the book you loved so much you want everyone to read it, the book you somehow own three copies of, that book you absolutely hated even though everyone else loves it, and so on.
Moreover, you will meet fellow readers, get a new book or two, and several book recommendations. Weâve often had readers experience books they wouldn't normally buy and enjoy it.
GROUP EXPECTATIONS for PLEASANT SWAPPING
* Please bring a book! It's not that you bring one you take one, but do try your best to bring something.
* Books stay on the tables, open for sharing, until you are ready to leave so that everyone can have a look. We are notably not first come first serve. Please wait until you are leaving to bag the book.
* If two or more people want the only copy of a book, negotiate. Maybe one of you reads it first and then gives it to the others. Or perhaps they have found another book instead. Or leave it to fate and toss a coin. The best part: now you have found somebody whose taste you can really admire. In any case, please don't walk away with a book with several names on it without letting the others know.
These negotiations are fun and easy, so don't shy away from a book because there's already a name on it, and feel free to put your name on as many books as you find interesting. It's not that you bring one you take one; you may take as many as you can negotiate.
* Political discussions with consent: make sure the people you are talking to would like to have a political discussion with you.
* Please respect this space as first and foremost a community for connecting readers over their love of books and reading, stories, and narratives of all sorts. Please be respectful of tastes and opinions.
* If something is bothering you, please reach out to the organizers, and we'll do our best to resolve it.
* Lastly, don't expect your book back. It will find a new home. If you love it, let it go.
Major LANGUAGES (and genres) of this meetup: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian; Fiction, Non-Fiction, Serious Reading, Light Fun, âclassics", Krimis, Booker winners, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Self-Help and more. You never know who can read what languages, and there's no accounting for taste.
We are a delightful and international group of readers.
We look forward to swapping with you!

Wine Tasting - Newcomers Night
This is "***New Members Night***." If you are one of the many folks on the fence about coming to your first wine tasting with the *Hilliard Wine Club*, this is the night to come. There will be many other new people, so you won't be alone. And the regulars will be there to help make you feel welcome. We're a relaxed and warm group. We hope to see you.
**New Venue:** After more than a year on Norwich Street in Old Hilliard we have found a new home at The District's Club House. It's about 3 miles from the former location but is brighter and more spacious. See photos and map.
**SIDE NOTE:** New members are welcome to ALL our Friday night wine tastings, but this night is a special overture to those who don't want to feel that they are the only new person in the room. Don't worry. You won't be. And don't hesitate to RSVP to other events.
**OLD MEMBERS NOTE**: Hey Old Members! You're not excluded from this event. We expect to see you there to help make the new members feel welcome.
**Sample 4 different wines** this Friday for $15 (*Cash or Venmo only please*). Glasses are provided. Bring a snack to share. Bring a bottle to share if you care to. See all the details below for the Hilliard Wine Club Wine Tasting. In Person. In Real Life. Actual Wine from glass bottles with corks and everything.
**Wine**: Tastings will be $15 for four samples as always. And you are welcome to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with others. Participation in the wine tastings is optional. But since youâre going, I will buy enough wine to cover you. If you bring your own wine and do not participate in the tasting you will only pay $10 to cover the door charge.
**Parking**: There are 15 visitor spaces along the North curve if you make a right hand turn after the first stop sign when you are facing the clubhouse. If all of those spaces are taken, there are 30 more visitor spaces across the back of the community (westerb edge) where the concrete wall separates the world from I-270. It's only about a 100 yard walk back to the clubhouse from there.
**Glasses**: âŠwill be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, itâs still worth mentioning. We donât have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please donât mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**Extra Wine**: After everyone has had their samples, we remove the pouring spouts and any remaining wine is poured freely to whomever wants it. I hate having leftover wine.
**Queen of Hearts**: The Queen of Hearts raffle is a fundraiser for the club and a Barnum and Bailey type extravaganza - minus the dancing ponies, clowns, and actual circus. Bring your ***cash*** as the Queen does not accept American Express or other plastic.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,
**Red 1 Realty**
