Snow loops of Don Valley (8.1 km)
Snow loops of Don Valley (8.1 km)
Golf courses are not just for golf. In winter, city-owned courses become cross-country skiing and snowshoeing territory. Of these, the Don Valley Golf Course has the largest and most scenic routes. It goes across rivers and under massive highways. Toronto's only ski lift is just outside its boundaries, which we can visit if the gate there is unlocked. After romping through the golf course, we'll continue exploration in the Hoggs Hollow neighbourhood. It has some historical buildings, a fancy French restaurant, and a 1850s tavern. Heading south along Yonge Street, we'll reach a clutch of eateries, where you can choose between Georgian, Indian, or Thai food. This event depends on snow. If there is heavy snowfall, you're encouraged to ski or snowshoe the golf course portion of the hike. If there is no snow and ice, we'll just walk. Walking in heavy snow is not recommended. If you must, wear muck boots and/or traction aids. After the golf course, the rest of the hike will be on foot. **Highlights** 1. Don Valley Golf Course main building (depart 12pm) 2. Golf turf blanketed in snow (or barren and grey) 3. Hogg's Hollow Bridge 4. Earl Bales ski lift 5. Don Valley Golf Course main building (depart 1:12pm) 6. Auberge du Pommier 7. C W Jeffrey's house 8. St. John's York Mills Anglican Church 9. York Mills Centre (depart 1:40pm) 10. Miller Tavern 11. Tamada Georgian Restaurant / Mumbaikar 12. Pii Nong Thai (arrive 2:05pm) **Neighbourhoods** Armour Heights > Hoggs Hollow > Bedford Park **Map** [https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1clcrZAR9LCTyev1-8BHf3pNAgyS-Muw&usp=sharing](https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1clcrZAR9LCTyev1-8BHf3pNAgyS-Muw&usp=sharing) Moderate incline going down from golf course, potentially covered in ice. Stairs to St John's York Mills Anglican Church. Uphill along Yonge St from York Mills to Glen Echo. Free admission to golf course in winter. **How it works** Hike starts punctually. Late or can't do the whole route? Meet us at scheduled checkpoints. See our [About section](https://www.meetup.com/hike-to-eat/) for more info.

Urban Walk: Introductory Hike – Crothers Woods
Urban Walk: Introductory Hike – Crothers Woods
Anyone is welcome to join this hike but we are especially inviting our new members (and prospective members) to learn about our hiking program and how our guided hikes are classified and described in the hike schedule and what you should bring with you on hike. We will explore Crothers Woods in the Don Valley, nature in the heart of the city, which will present some moderate challanges with it's ups and downs giving it's Level 2 classification. The actual route will depend on conditions of the day to keep it a moderate level hike. Please bring ice traction cleats (mandatory) for a safe hike. We'll have a brief outdoor snack/lunch stop along the route. We will return to Todmorden Mills at the end of the hike. Note transit users will need to ascend the fairly steep hill on Pottery Road at the conclusion of the hike. Washrooms are available at the Todmorden Mills Site. On this introductory hike we will: * Discuss how a hike is classified (Level 1,2,3, Moderate/Fast, etc) * Discuss the variables that affect the difficulty of any particular hike * Discuss why different people have different perspectives on the difficulty level of the same hike * Demonstrate some terrain that would raise the difficulty level of hike hiking * Help you know you have the information required to choose the hikes right for you Register At BTC website : [https://hikes.brucetrail.org/event/crothers-woods-introductory-hike/2026-02-22/](https://hikes.brucetrail.org/event/crothers-woods-introductory-hike/2026-02-22/) Please register at above so we have you on the waiver form
Intro Meetup + Exposure Triangle Basics
Intro Meetup + Exposure Triangle Basics
This will be a relaxed introduction session where we meet each other, talk about goals, and go over the fundamentals of the exposure triangle in a simple, practical way. Plan for the meetup: Welcome & Introductions (15 minutes) Quick intros, what you’re hoping to learn, and what camera you’re using (if any). Exposure Triangle Basics (15 minutes) A beginner-friendly breakdown of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they work together. No math, no overwhelm — just understanding what each setting actually does. Open Discussion (45 minutes) Questions about manual mode, common beginner challenges, what confuses you most, and what kinds of photography interest you. We’ll also plan our next event: a beginner-friendly photography hike at Rouge National Urban Park the following weekend, focused on light, composition, and practicing manual mode outdoors. Who this is for: Beginners and anyone learning manual mode. No experience required. What to bring: Any camera (DSLR, mirrorless, compact, or phone) and your questions. This group is collaborative and non-commercial. No service promotion or selling permitted.

You can e-transfer to the following email at:** **torontohistorywalks@gmail.com** First it was **Ambrose Small** and my team of brilliant detectives who tried to figure it all out. The walkers on this tour just about cracked the case. Well done my detectives. But your smarts are needed again however. The Harley Karulis Detective Agency needs your help! And this one needs all our brain power to figure out. This one might be the toughest assignment yet. Here is your case file. The details you will need to get started on this walking tour. A case that shocked Torontonians when it occurred in late October of 1933, and still reverberates to this day. A cold case solved, not by a long shot. No one really knows the entire story or the truth. It unfolds like an Agatha Christie novel as you will see. The details of this case culminates in one of the most perplexing, head scratching crimes in the history of this city and very few have heard of the sad life and end of little Alfreda Dolores Mae Hillier. Little Bunty as they called her was born in 1932, and was the apple of her parent's eyes. Her father Alfred Hillier was a World War 1 hero, and had fallen on bad times during the depression years. He just started a new job recently. Her mother Florence was a stay at home mom and loved to play and watch her little girl out the window of their small home on Boothroyd Avenue in Leslieville. On a cool, sunny October afternoon at the height of the depression, Alfreda, an 18 month old girl disappeared after heading out for a walk alone. Sounds on the level I must say. Warning bells! Within a few hours questions as to what happened to this little girl started to swirl around the neighbourhood. All details of this case are taken directly from the archives of the Toronto Star and the city which paint a rather confused story culminating in the arrest of two young boys, one age 4 and the other 7 who admitted their guilt. Or was coerced into that same confession? Let's toss in a few more details to cloud the story however: 1) a convicted criminal in the area, information told to the Calgary Hearld the day after she was found dead. 2) another man who seemed to be present when she was found and then wandered off and disappeared from the police investigation file. 3) the testimony of two underaged children that had no relevance to some of the details. 4) the coroner's report which contradicted just about everything the police came up with and witnesses testimony as well. This walking tour/game takes participants back in time to 1933 and explores the many sites associated with the tragic death of Alfreda Hillier, and the personalities involved. You will be introduced to 10 historic characters and each has their own dark secrets, it will be up to you to render a **verdict**! Are you up for it detectives? Our walk begins at the **Jones Branch of the Toronto Public Library** at the southwest corner of Jones Avenue and Dundas Street East in Leslieville just a few blocks north of Queen Street East. This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person. Please get your tickets early if you would like to attend. \*\* **Please note: Please e-transfer the ticket price when booking your space for this tour! 🌿 Toronto Women’s Campfire Experience — Workshop + Social
🌿 Toronto Women’s Campfire Experience — Workshop + Social
This event is for women in their late 20s to 40s who want a real campfire experience in the city, shared in a small group of other nature-loving women. We’ll take part in a guided winter campfire experience led by a park educator, offering a more hands-on and immersive format than our usual walks. Downsview Park is one of Toronto’s most unique green spaces — once a Canadian Forces base, now a protected urban habitat where deer, coyotes, owls, and other wildlife are commonly seen. **What we’ll do** * Start with a short walk through the park to get moving and take in the winter landscape * Participate in a guided outdoor fire session, learning the basics of building and managing a campfire * Spend time gathered around the fire, roasting marshmallows and enjoying warm forest tea * Relax, talk, and enjoy being outdoors together Marshmallows are provided, including options suitable for vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and halal diets. **Why join** This is a special winter experience that blends learning, participation, and time in nature — all within the city. It’s ideal for women looking for something more intentional than a walk or café meetup, and who enjoy shared experiences that feel a little different and thoughtfully put together. Spots are limited. **Disclaimer**: This group is intended to provide a calm and enjoyable space for women to spend time outdoors together. Outdoor walking involves inherent risks, including uneven terrain, weather conditions, and the possibility of slips or falls. By joining, participants acknowledge and accept these risks and take full responsibility for their own safety and personal belongings. The organizer is not responsible for any injuries, accidents, losses, or damages that may occur during events. Participants are responsible for dressing appropriately, wearing suitable footwear, and assessing their own physical ability to participate. Photos may be taken during events for group memories or future promotional use. By attending, you consent to being included in these images unless you notify the organizer otherwise. Participants agree to respect the privacy of others and contribute to a positive, supportive environment. Please note that event fees are non-refundable.

Let's go sliding down, let's go tobogganing!
Let's go sliding down, let's go tobogganing!
Moving this event to tomorrow, February 22 since there isn't enough snow yet. If the conditions don't improve, we'll keep this for a day with better snowfall. Can't let the snowfall go to waste, hence, we are going tobogganing. Let's connect with our 8 year old selves and make this snowy Saturday adventurous and magical! The plan - Slide down the hill and then climb up to slide down again. Skills needed - 1. Ability to scream your lungs out. 2. Ability to fall not-so-gracefully Things you need - 1. A sled, tobogganing mat (Canadian Tire has some under $10), or anything that helps you slide down. 2. Snow pants are recommended 3. Boots with good grip are also a great idea. 4. Something to cover your mouth, again optional but good to have. We’ll take turns racing down the hill, cheer each other on, pause for breath and just enjoy being outside together. After this event, for the magical part (for whoever's interested), we will head towards Trillium Park to see the light displays (another event from our meet up group). On the way we will stop to grab a bite, hot chocolate and coffee.

Coffee and conversation at [Stauf's Coffee Roasters](https://www.staufs.com/) in German Village. Street parking is free on Sundays.
Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
We'll play board games at the [Land-Grant Brewing Company](https://landgrantbrewing.com/). The brewery has multiple [food trucks](https://landgrantbrewing.com/food/) on Sundays, including [Ray Ray's Hog Pit](https://rayrayshogpit.com/franklinton), [Buck City Sammies](https://www.buckcitysammies.com/menu), and [Hai Poké](https://www.haipokefoodtruck.com/). The brewery also has (passable) drip coffee, free water, and Jeni's ice cream. You can also walk over to the [Land Grant Extension](https://callinyourbluffcoffee.com/) for "real" coffee. (You may have to stand in line, though. The Extension is popular.) You can come late or leave early. Please just sign up so I know to expect you. **Notes on Parking** * You'll (probably) have to park on the street, but street parking is free on Sundays. * There are [parking garages](https://landgrantbrewing.com/parking/) a little farther away if you want. These are obviously not free, though. * There is a [lot next door](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.0%22N+83%C2%B000'40.9%22W/@39.957211,-83.0119921,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m12!1m7!3m6!1s0x88388f3efd89238b:0xc139207386232411!2sLand-Grant+Brewing+Company!8m2!3d39.9577613!4d-83.011426!16s%2Fg%2F1pzt7t9df!3m3!8m2!3d39.957211!4d-83.011347?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) to the brewery that you're allowed to park in, but it is not free. I've never parked there, so I don't know anything about rates. (I'm told though that if you eat at Milo's Deli next door to this lot that Milo's will stamp your parking so it's free.) * You're going to see odd signs on [Lucas St](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.1%22N+83%C2%B000'40.3%22W/@39.957256,-83.0124134,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!1m5!3m4!2zMznCsDU3JzI4LjgiTiA4M8KwMDAnNDEuNSJX!8m2!3d39.957993!4d-83.011536!3m3!8m2!3d39.957256!4d-83.011197?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) (saying it's a "private street") that will lead you to believe you're not allowed to park there, but you actually are. * Columbus parking cops literally do not work on Sundays. This means that, even if you're driving a non-EV, you can park in the EV spots near the brewery. **Games** I do bring many games, but please bring some of your own as well.

Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
**Summary** For this event, we will do the [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at [The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/), a ten-thousand acre conservation center in Muskingum County. It is the largest such center in North America and one of the largest in the entire world. During this tour, we'll visit The Wilds' rhino herd in their state-of-the-art heated barns and learn how The Wilds' animal management team takes care of one of the largest herds of rhinos outside of Africa and Asia. **The date and time of this tour** We will be doing the 1:00 p.m. [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) on Saturday, February 28. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes. **What you need to do to attend** Signing up here on Meetup will not get you into The Wilds for the tour. You must go out to The Wilds' [website](https://www.thewilds.org/) and [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour). Please [purchase your ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour), then sign up here on Meetup so I know how many to expect. **Attendance cap** There are only eight total slots/tickets available for this tour. As I obviously have already bought one of the tickets, that leaves seven spaces for everyone else. If you are interested in this event, I urge you to [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at The Wilds' website as soon as possible. Since their website is obviously public, nothing prevents other people having nothing to do with *GOhio!* from buying their own tickets, thereby potentially taking an available slot away from you. **Additional notes on attendance** I have now run several events at The Wilds. While the location of The Wilds and the pricing of the tickets generally leads to small turnouts, the people who have gone have all enjoyed it and were glad they went. If you've never been to The Wilds and you like zoos or animals at all, you are likely to find any tour at The Wilds to be a rewarding experience. **Tickets and pricing** [Tickets](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) for this tour are $95, or $76 if you're a Wilds' member. I've posted screen shots, below, to help you be sure you're buying tickets for the correct event. Wilds' memberships pay for themselves if you go to The Wilds at least twice a year, and [Columbus Zoo members](https://www.columbuszoo.org/membership) get a discount on memberships to The Wilds. I will always run at least two events a year at The Wilds. Tickets for all Wilds' tours must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the actual tour. **Cancellations and refunds** Per The Wilds' [Cancellation Policy](https://www.thewilds.org/policies): *In order to be eligible for refund and accrue no rescheduling fees, cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance of reservation. This is a very short document and should take you no more than two minutes to complete. **Where we'll meet** We will meet at The Wilds, whose actual address is [14000 International Rd, Cumberland, OH 43732](https://www.google.com/maps/place/14000+International+Rd,+Cumberland,+OH+43732/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837dae07a595557:0xa1ceca93325a8bd1?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Please try to be there by 12:30 p.m. For most Wilds' tours, a shuttle bus will take you to the actual spot of the tour. So think of this as though you're going to the airport to catch a flight. It helps to be on time. The Wilds generally asks that people arrive at least thirty minutes because the scheduled start time of their tour. **GPS / Getting to The Wilds** The Wilds is in a very rural area, but I've never had a problem getting there with my GPS (I have Verizon). I've also uploaded a JPG map, below, of Muskingum County. Sometimes, though, it's hard to get a signal when you're at The Wilds and getting ready to leave. So you might want to consider downloading an offline map in Google Maps. Your cell phone should pick up a signal, however, within a few minutes after you leave. The Wilds' Visitor Center does have free Wi-Fi. **Carpooling?** If you want to carpool, I recommend discussing this in the comments, below, to this event. While I don't myself carpool, I will do what I can to help you arrange something if I can. **The weather** Dress for the weather. Just because the barn is heated doesn't mean it will be warm. And wear closed-toed shoes. Wilds' tours typically run no matter what the weather is. **After the tour** Once we're done with the rhinos, we'll head over to the very highly rated [Y-Bridge Brewing Company](https://ybridgebrewing.com/). The brewery is about thirty minutes from The Wilds, and it will be on the way back to Columbus for most, if not all, of us. The brewery's actual address is [1417 Linden Ave Ste D, Zanesville, OH 43701](https://www.google.com/maps/place/1417+Linden+Ave+d,+Zanesville,+OH+43701/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837edd6cc50824f:0xe3a0af1ccb2aefbf?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Y-Bridge Brewing does not serve food; however, they have several [food options](https://ybridgebrewing.com/food-options). I encourage you to check these out ahead of time on their website for yourself. However, here are a few of them: *Within walking distance -- 120 feet away* * [Angry Bull Saloon](https://www.facebook.com/AngryBullSaloonZanesville/) (pizza & subs) * The Corner Pub Sports Bar and Grill (classic bar food) *Delivery options -- [Door Dash](https://www.doordash.com/)* * [4 Star Pizza](https://fourstarpizza.com/), (740) 452-9300 * [Donatos](https://www.donatos.com/), (740) 452-7900 * [Pizza Cottage](https://www.pizza-cottage.com/), (740) 455-6000 * [Dominos](https://www.dominos.com/), (740) 455-3126 * [Papa John's](https://www.papajohns.com/), (740) 450-4100 If you live in the area or can't make The Wilds but still want to meet us at the brewery, that's fine too.
