Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe & Hellfire – Country Hike
Walk length 10miles/16km. Circular. A scenic walk exploring the countryside close to Hughenden Manor and West Wycombe with a combination of woods and fields. Hughenden Manor was the home of the famous Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli from 1848 until his death in 1881. He entertained Queen Victoria here in 1877. The house is now owned by the National Trust. The historic village of West Wycombe is largely owned by the National Trust and features many interesting buildings built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Mausoleum and Golden Ball above West Wycombe village are impressive local landmarks, visually dominating the village and can be seen for miles. The old village of West Wycombe and Wycombe Hill supports around 8 ghosts wandering the graveyards, caves and pubs! West Wycombe hill has been used for a quarry for centuries for roads and houses in the area and the quarrying was extended in the middle of the 18th century to help employ local workers after serious crop failures by Sir Francis Dashwood for his notorious Hellfire Club that may have involved Satanic or Pagan rituals but also a lot of partying! Lunch & Finish Please bring a snacks and water for the walk. The walk should finish about 4pm and include a pack lunch stop and optional pub at the end, however the time may be earlier than this depending on the weather and pace. We will go for optional drinks at the end of the walk at High Wycombe, the pub is very close to the station. Meeting The walks starts outside High Wycombe Rail station at 10.45am after the train from London arrives. We will have a snack lunch stop at West Wycombe village before the return leg to High Wycombe. Walk Cost: ÂŁ7 cash on the day organizer fee. If coming from London I suggest meeting close to the WHSmiths from 9.30am to give you time to get tickets as you may have to queue (see picture below). Car: Car parking at High Wycombe is charged but free off street parking is available 10mins walk away (Rectory Avenue or adjacent roads, please check for restrictions before parking). Today we walk through the contrasting scenery of Crystal Palace Park, Biggin Woods, Norwood Grove and Streatham Common **WALK START:Crystal Palace Park Railway Station** (National Rail - Travel Zone 3/4) WALK ROUTE: From Crystal Palace Park Railway Station we walk across Crystal Palace Park and then enter Westow Park, Upper Norwood Recreation Ground, Biggin Woods, Norwood Grove and Streatham Common. WALK DISTANCE: Approx 6.5 miles. WALK FINISH: Streatham Station ( National Rail. We always end the walk at a pub where the socialising can continue. Take this opportunity to visit green parts of London, unknown to most people, and that you would not otherwise have an opportunity to see. RISKS:Please dress appropriately for weather conditions and carry a bottle of water and necessary medication. You need to be moderately fit for this walk and be able to walk for four miles without a break. In these walks we use; pavements, cross busy roads, public parkland, towpaths alongside water, other public paths, and tracks through woodland and countryside. Please only wear good sturdy shoes, trousers are recommended, and take care as surfaces may be uneven, and some paths are also used by joggers and cyclists. Our guide and driver will meet you at the airport and take you straight to the South Coast where we’ll spend two days exploring all the exciting sites and landscapes. Highlights include Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skogarfoss Waterfall, Dyrholaey Peninsula and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach by Vík Village. **Overnight at Hotel Kria** ## **29th DECEMBER** **GLACIER LAGOON** Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading over to the Glacier Lagoon where we will see the famous icebergs floating on the lagoon. If we’re lucky we might spot some seals. Afterward, we’ll go on an exploratory hike. When the sun goes down we should be able to see the northern lights if the skies are clear. **Overnight at Hotel Kria** ## **30th DECEMBER** **FROM THE EAST TO REYKJAVIK** After breakfast, it’s time to head back to Reykjavik. On the way back our guide will show us some of the highlights of the South Coast before taking us to Reykjavik where we’ll spend the next four nights. **Overnight at Hotel Island** ## **31st DECEMBER** **NEW YEARS EVE** We have a free day to explore Reykjavik on our own. At night we’ll have our New Years’ dinner together at Hotel Island. We will enjoy a leisurely walk (approx 45 mins - 1 hour) along Regent's Canal from Angel station and ending at the fabulous Victoria Park Market. This event usually runs on the 4th Sunday of each month, unless there is bad weather or exceptional circumstances. There is a wondering food market in Victoria Park, and most of us will get something to eat together. We usually sit on the grass or public benches (if available) near the Bonner Gate entrance, behind the Dogs of Alcibiades statue. This is at the intersection of foodstalls running north/south and east/west. If it is raining or the market is closed, we can either go to the Pavillion cafe, or The Crown pub on Grove Road instead. WE WILL WAIT ONLY ABOUT 10 MINUTES AFTER THE START TIME. If you are running late, please catch us up along the canal. Please note, I will not be checking for meetup or whatsapp messages after the walk starts. We are a welcoming group, so feel free to mix around and say hello other people. Join us at **Emergency Exits: The Fight for Independence in Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus at the Imperial War Museum, London.** ***(Fancy the museum, but not this exhibition? Feel free to sign up and just visit the museum sections you want to see.)*** *Emergency Exits* focuses on three wars in the 1950s: in Malaya (now Malaysia), Kenya and Cyprus. It explores the motivations of key figures, the responses of the British colonial authorities and how these conflicts affected ordinary people. You’ll hear stories from people on different sides as they share their thoughts on the wars that shaped their lives. The exhibition also explores the British Government’s attempts to prevent documents relating to the conflicts from being published. In 2011, following a long battle by campaigners, the Government revealed that thousands of these files were still held in a secure archive. *Emergency Exits* helps unpick the path towards recognition in the UK. Sunday rehearsal with Castellers of London. Meet us at the OBC Community Centre to help build human towers! This get together is a great opportunity for you to meet new friends, socialise and have a go and explore your abilities as a human tower builder a.k.a Casteller! For newcomers we have a team of trained Castellers who will introduce you to the group, guide you through the activity and help you safely take part in this unique Catalan tradition. When you arrive just approach us as we are really friendly! If in doubt ask for Cuss! Please let us know if you are bringing guests. After the rehearsal we go to a nearby pub for social drinks where everyone is welcome :) What do you need? 1. Ideally a cotton shirt: to protect your neck and shoulders, the more durable the shirt/top the better. We do not recommend any thin items of clothing! 2. Jeans: allowing you to move freely without breaking. 3. Mask: We still require the use of a mask as you will be very close to your fellow Castellers - basically you will be hugging people! The rest of the equipment is on us! We take health and safety very seriously, both in relation to COVID-19 and also the activity- please be assured that the safety of all participants is of the utmost importance to us and we take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk, ensuring we all have a great time! Our regular members won't be filling in the Meet Up to say they are going 🙂 So don't be put off if you see only a handful have said they are going. A minimum of 25 on the day is normal. What the Meet Up may show is how many new people like yourself are going.

If your coming from outside London its a 5 minute walk from Blackfriars station routes from Kent Hertfordshire Sussex etc go there and you go straight up the road to Southwark station. The mochas here are the upmost quality meet addictive. I have an eclectic mixture of people attending my events all ages nationalities are most welcome. I prefer a smaller group so its more personal intimate and relaxed and less noisy I aim for no more than 20 people maximum but don't be worried put your name down. **Beginner friendly mixed football** A friendly mixed gender football game in Regents Park. Equipment such as balls, goals and bibs will be provided. You will have the choice of playing in a beginner friendly or intermediate level game. **About Social Sports Mix** Social Sports Mix is for anyone interested in playing mixed gender sports and meeting new people in London. This event happens every Sunday throughout the Summer. You can join our events as an individual or with friends. There is no commitment to come weekly required and we welcome beginners. **How it works** We meet at the venue to organise teams and for everyone to get to know each other.
