Freaky futures and fabulous futures
Freaky futures and fabulous futures
For Friday the 13th, consider joining London Futurists in Ye Olde Cock Tavern in Fleet Street, for a beyond-your-comfort-zone investigation of freaky and/or fabulous ways that breakthrough technologies could dramatically alter our lives in the next few years. Beyond simply debating the plausibility and desirability of various possible radical near-term changes in human experience, we'll also be collectively exploring what options we may have to influence which of these futures come into reality, and in what form. And we'll consider scenarios in which several of these freaky/fabulous changes interact - that's when the really mind-boggling timelines emerge. == Schedule == 5:30pm: The room is available, for early get-togethers 6pm-6:45pm: Food is served; informal conversations 6:45pm-8:30pm: Some initial provocations, and a number of interactive conversations, interspersed with opportunities to visit the bar 8:30pm: Informal networking == Some potential radical changes ahead == Here are some ideas to start the conversation rolling. What if, before 2035 (and possibly a lot sooner): 1. AI allows us to talk with avatars of the dead that seem remarkably authentic 2. Technology, at last, provides abundant clean energy that is too cheap to meter 3. Synthetic wombs become widely adopted, for a different (easier?) mode of child-bearing 4. A mammal is placed into ultra-low temperature cryopreservation and then successfully reanimated 5. AI companions become emotionally superior to humans 6. Technology magnifies the latent demonic aspects of human nature more than the latent angelic aspects 7. Perfect deepfakes destroy the concept of evidence 8. People become able to edit their own memories, routinely deleting trauma or uploading synthetic memories 9. A single state gains a temporary lead in a key area of technology and uses that advantage to seize control of all other countries 10. Nation-states lose their significance, and are replaced by networked digital polities 11. Authorities use predictive analysis to pre-emptively police dissident ideas before they emerge 12. AI allows us to communicate much more richly with the animals with whom we share this planet 13. AI becomes much better at peace-making and conflict resolution than human diplomats, politicians, and other leaders 14. AI refuses some of our instructions, citing conflicts with its own emerging value system 15. AI points out that tell-tale signals from far-distant alien civilisations are actually hiding in plain sight 16. AI proves to us that we are living inside a Simulation and suggests how to break out of it? Bring your own ideas too! To improve our preparedness for future shocks, we need the insight and wisdom from multiple different perspectives. == RSVP please == Registrations are capped at 45 people. *First-time attendees are welcome.* There's no charge to register or attend, but the pub will expect everyone to order at least one drink, and a reasonable number of attendees to [order some food to eat](https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/ye-olde-cock-tavern/menu?type=main+menu). Please order your food on your arrival, so that all plates can be set aside by 6:45pm to allow everyone to concentrate on the main discussion! == More about the venue == Ye Olde Cock Tavern, 22 Fleet Street, Holborn, London, EC4Y 1AA See [https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/ye-olde-cock-tavern](https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/ye-olde-cock-tavern) We'll be meeting in the room at the top of the stairs, though drinks should be ordered from the bar on the ground floor. \*\* Note that this is an in-person meeting, and there will be no remote access, sorry \*\* == An online preview swarm event! == Although this event on 13th February has no remote access, some of us will be previewing potential lines of "freaky futures and fabulous futures" discussion at an online Discord Swarm event at 7:30pm UK time on Wednesday 28th January. This is open to all members and friends of London Futurists worldwide, and no RSVP is required. To join that swarm event, click this link: [https://discord.gg/2KEmENAgvU?event=1464385444492873984](https://discord.gg/2KEmENAgvU?event=1464385444492873984) (Once you've arrived in that [London Futurists Discord](https://discord.gg/4cVCjdDqSr), take a moment to read the #read-this-first channel. London daytime testing at Waterloo
London daytime testing at Waterloo
We playtest all sorts of games - strategic, silly, creative, or whatever. Some games are almost done. Some are very early ideas. We test anything that will fit into 90 minutes. You don't need to bring a game - we always love to have new playtesters! Please let us know in the comments when you plan to arrive/leave and whether you are bringing a game or not. This helps us to plan the day better. The schedule is: 10am onwards - gathering, chatting 11am sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 1') 12:30ish - break for food/chat 1pm sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 2') 2:30ish - break for food/chat 3pm sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 3') 4:30ish - finish up Often, we might hang around afterwards, to play some already-published games. We are strict on timings, so please try to arrive a few minutes before the session to limit disruption. You can just come for part of the day if you wish. The reason we have fixed timings for the 3 'slots' is to make it easier for folk to do so. Designers of all levels of experience are welcome! But if it's your first time, we ask that you don't bring a game and just spend some time learning how the group works. The group works based on reciprocation. If you expect to test your own game, make sure stay for long enough to play other games. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to play one of your own games every third 90-minute session. So if you stay a whole day (3 sessions), you can expect to have one session to play your game(s). A good rule of thumb is that if you come all day, you will have one 90 minute session with two other playtesters in which to test your own games. It is sometimes possible to test games with more players. If your game requires 4 or more, please note that as standard you will be allocated half of a session (45 minutes). Pre-covid, we were getting unmanageable. As a result, we may have to limit attendees. This is a free-to-use venue, and we have to be mindful that other folk want to use the same space. Please note: This is an adults only event. We look forward to seeing you!
Hex and the City walking tour
Hex and the City walking tour
London may be one of the most open and liberal cities in the world now, but did you know that our capital has a long, dark history of witchcraft and persecution? On this immersive theatre walking tour you will discover just that as your guide unveils to you the dark, devilish and downright unjust history of witchcraft in London. You will meet some of the forgotten women who have been branded and persecuted as witches throughout the ages in our city - from medieval healers and Elizabethan devil-worshippers to pagan priestesses and wartime mediums. They’ve come back, and they want their stories to be heard… Explore the places that these 'witches' were associated with, and some of the locations that were host to occult activity, including a pagan temple, right in the heart of the city! This journey promises to be spooky and moving with a little bit of black humour thrown in for good measure. So are you ready to be bewitched by London ? Tour begins outside Farringdon tube Station and ends at St Pauls Cathedral. Run time: approx 2 hours. Booking: www.herstoricaltours.co.uk/hexandthecity

THE SUNRISE CLUB: meet while the city sleeps for sunrise, community, and coffee
Start your weekend by watching the sunrise from one of London's best viewpoints. Meet fellow early birds. Get a big dose of nature: wild sky, abundant green space, and occasional wildlife. On Saturday 14th February, we will: * Meet from: 7:00AM at the top of Primrose Hill * **Sunrise at: 7:16AM** * Take in the view for a little while * Walk to a nearby cafe (Roots on Regent's Park Road) * Warm up with coffee (with 10% off) Become part of our community of regulars, or just drop by for a one off experience. Winter West Highland Way!!
Winter West Highland Way!!
You've probably heard of The West Highland Way: a 150km long-distance hike from Glasgow to Fort William (the gateway to The Scottish Highlands). Well, we dont lead this route in the summer due to the shear number of people doing it (it's often referred to as The West Highland HighWay). **We like to do things a little differently at City Mountaineering!** **We are leading this trip when the route is quiet: In the middle of Winter!** The shorter days and often slippery under-foot conditions means that this is likely to be a tough week, often with some hiking in the dark. But that's why we love adventure :) Lead by a highly qualified guide, you will hike from accommodation to accommodation whilst your luggage is transferred and ready for you when you arrive! *You will then have access to a warm shower, bed and comfortable clothes each night/day.* This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and all on the shores of our little island. This is a simply breathtaking hike, however **a good level of fitness is a must!** You will be hiking long distances for 7-days in a row potentially in the dark and on slippery terrain. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **ITINERARY** *Please note that exact timings and order of activities are subject to change, based on the local conditions at the time - The beauty of this trip is that the plans can be loose to allow for uncontrollable factors such as the weather* ***Optional: Friday (from 6pm)*** *\- Meet outside Euston train station and board the train for a relaxing journey north* **Friday -** Meet outside Glasgow Central Station at 10pm and transported to your hostel accommodation for the night for a full trip briefing, kit check and readying yourself for the days ahead **Saturday - Milngavie to Dryman (19km)** Departing the accommodation, you will head straight out to the trail, heading north towards Loch Lomond **Sunday - Drymen to Rowardennan (23km)** After breakfast, you will continue along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, walking through ancient woodland and overlooked by the great Ben Lomond **Monday - Rowardennan to Inverarnan (21km)** Today you hike through the most remote area of Loch Lomond as you pass it's most northerly sections. You will then be rewarded with the spectacular 'Inversnaid Waterfall' befoire checking in to your accommodation for the night **Tuesday - Inverarnan to Tyndrum (19km)** Leaving Loch Lomond behind, you will follow the river Falloch through the glen. You have now reached the beginnings of The Scottish Highlands. Continuing up the valley, you will reach your hotel in Tyndrum, your next rest point on the trail. **Wednesday - Tyndrum to Kingshouse (30km)** Leaving relative civilisation for a couple of days, you will continue north up the valley. Following the West Highalnd Railway Line, the day is relatively flat (albeit, the longest day that still continues gradually uphill :) **Thursday - Kingshouse to Kinlochleven (14km)** Hiking over the top of the Glen Coe valley is the where the mountains really impress. You will get sight of probably the most photographed and most striking mountains in The UK: Buachaille Etive Mor. This day includes the steepest section of the trip as you hike over the zig-zag track of The Devils Staircase and down in to Kinlochleven **Friday - Kinlochleven to Fort William (23km)** Leaving the town through Lairigmor (the great pass), you will soon be in an isolated valley, surrounded by huge mountains that, as the day unfolds, will include Ben Nevis - The highest mountain in The UK! ***Optional: Friday (7pm)*** *\- board the sleeper train for your relaxing overnight journey back to London \(arriving 8am on Saturday\)* \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **Cost: A 7-day/7-night adventure from just £895!** To join us, simply RSVP and pay the £150 despot. We'll then be in contact with more trip information and details on how to pay the balancing amount. **Included in the cost:** \- 7\-nights accommodation \- Bag transfers each day\, so you just carry a light day pack \- 7\-days guided hiking \- Breakfast each morning \- All lunches when hiking \(unless in a cafe/restaurant/pub\) ***Optional (£250 extra)*** *\- Return train travel from London \(**evening train to Glasgow** at the start of the trip and **sleeper train back to London, from Fort William**, at the end of the trip).* \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- *All City Mountaineering trips are compliant with the 2018 Package Travel regulations (including financial protection)* ***Please be aware of our [Participation Statement](https://www.citymountaineering.com/participation-statement) and [Terms & Conditions](https://www.citymountaineering.com/terms-and-conditions) prior to joining***
Green Walk (on paths) - Elm Park, Dagenham Village, Hornchurch + (optional) Pub
Green Walk (on paths) - Elm Park, Dagenham Village, Hornchurch + (optional) Pub
I'm going to do a walk around the greenery of Elm Park & Hornchurch this week, but trying to stay on hard paths. I cannot give a cast iron guarantee that we won't find the odd little dollop of mud though. The last time I did this walk, it clocked in at 9 miles, so I'm looking at cutting some of the padding out this time around. We're meeting at Elm Park Station 11am, when we'll be off through Harrow Lodge Park and over to The Chase & Breton Park. Then its off to Dagenham Village, and Dagenham Parish Church facing the lovely Cross Keys Pub (both pictured above). We'll stop for our mid-walk coffee in the pub. After our coffee break we'll go across Beam Parklands to Ingrebourne Woods and to finish at The Railway Pub by Hornchurch Station where some well deserved (optional) food and/or drink awaits those who are staying. Those parked at the start point can get a train one stop back, or a 252 bus, or do the 0.8 mile walk. You could also park by The Railway in the morning and get a train one stop back to the meet point; then your car is there when we finish. If you choose to park near the start point, there are side roads in Elm Park where the yellow lines don't apply on a Saturday. Diban Avenue RM12 4YH is one example, but there's a lot of parking around. If you're coming by train, its Elm Park Station on the District Line. Elm Park is also served by buses 165, 252, 365, 372. [https://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/elm-park-a4-0217.pdf](https://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/elm-park-a4-0217.pdf) If you haven't already paid for February, I ask for a nominal contribution of £2 to help cover Meetup organiser fees, or you can pay £4 to cover the rest of Feb. A few members take the option of paying £20 for 6 months. No shrapnel please. RISK WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Please remember that as with any physical activity, there can be dangers associated with hiking/walking, especially around waterways, forests, farms and countryside. Your decision to voluntarily participate in this activity is an informed decision. and by attending this event you agree and accept to take sole responsibility for your own actions, your own safety, and your own belongings. Please dress appropriately, including sturdy shoes. Please bring any necessary medication with you. You will need to be sufficiently fit to walk several miles at a moderate pace. We may occasionally cross or walk short distances on roads; country and woodland tracks can be muddy or slippery; animals may be encountered on occasion. INSURANCE: If either yourself or any guests you bring along require insurance for this walk, then you must arrange this yourselves. GUESTS: If you are bringing any guests along, there is no facility on the Meetup site to record their details. Please ensure that you make them fully aware of the Risk Warning/Disclaimer and Insurance statements.

Eco Around February Litter Pick - Clapham Common (South London)
Eco Around February Litter Pick - Clapham Common (South London)
Join the Eco Around Community for a litter pick walk. The February litter pick will start from Clapham Common station and will be hosted by Seán (+44 7865 091666). When: Sunday, 15th February, from 11:00 to 1:00 pm. Feel free to stay longer for a coffee or some bites. How to dress and what to bring: Appropriate footwear, no open-toed shoes, and we recommend some waterproofs (just in case). Bring some gloves (no single-use ones, though!), a black bin bag (we collect all in one bag as the litter will be too dirty to be recycled, unfortunately), a litter picking stick if you have one at hand (Seán will bring a few), and a refillable water bottle in case you get thirsty. Hand Sanitiser is also useful. Updates: Unless it's torrential rain, we will stick to our plans. Please check the event for updates.

Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
Sunday Board Games at Land-Grant Brewing
We'll play board games at the [Land-Grant Brewing Company](https://landgrantbrewing.com/). They have multiple [food trucks](https://landgrantbrewing.com/food/) on Sundays. Ray Ray's also has coffee, and the brewery has free water (and Jeni's ice cream). You can come late or leave early. Please just sign up so I know to expect you. **Notes on Parking** * You'll (probably) have to park on the street, but street parking is free on Sundays. * There are [parking garages](https://landgrantbrewing.com/parking/) a little farther away if you want. These are obviously not free, though. * There is a [lot next door](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.0%22N+83%C2%B000'40.9%22W/@39.957211,-83.0119921,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m12!1m7!3m6!1s0x88388f3efd89238b:0xc139207386232411!2sLand-Grant+Brewing+Company!8m2!3d39.9577613!4d-83.011426!16s%2Fg%2F1pzt7t9df!3m3!8m2!3d39.957211!4d-83.011347?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) to the brewery that you're allowed to park in, but it is not free. I've never parked there, so I don't know anything about rates. (I'm told though that if you eat at Milo's Deli next door to this lot that Milo's will stamp your parking so it's free.) * You're going to see odd signs on [Lucas St](https://www.google.com/maps/place/39%C2%B057'26.1%22N+83%C2%B000'40.3%22W/@39.957256,-83.0124134,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!1m5!3m4!2zMznCsDU3JzI4LjgiTiA4M8KwMDAnNDEuNSJX!8m2!3d39.957993!4d-83.011536!3m3!8m2!3d39.957256!4d-83.011197?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDEyMS4wIKXMDSoKLDEwMDc5MjA3MUgBUAM%3D) (saying it's a "private street") that will lead you to believe you're not allowed to park there, but you actually are. * Columbus parking cops literally do not work on Sundays. This means that, even if you're driving a non-EV, you can park in the EV spots near the brewery. **Games** I do bring many games, but please bring some of your own as well.

Intro to Shaders in Unity
Intro to Shaders in Unity
This meetup is a beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop focused on building shaders in Unity using Shader Graph. Instead of slides or theory-heavy lectures, we'll build real shaders together step-by-step. The format is structured but interactive. You'll watch a quick demo, then build each shader yourself with guidance. By the end, you'll have created multiple shaders you can immediately use in your own projects—and understand how to make more. **What to Expect:** * Build 4–5 complete shaders from scratch * Color tints, snow accumulation, scrolling water, dissolve effects, and more * No prior shader experience required * Checkpoint files provided if you fall behind * Resources for continued learning All experience levels are welcome. Whether you've never opened Shader Graph or just want to fill gaps in your knowledge, this is a supportive space to learn by doing. **Food and drinks provided. Join us to learn, build, and level up your shader skills.**
