Paul's Friday Walk Turnham Green to Kew Bridge, via leafy Chiswick
If you have never come along to this meetup, you should, as it is becoming one of my most popular ones, and is certainly worth doing.
Join me for a lovely walk starting at Turnham Green station (on the District line) exploring one of London’s greenest suburbs.
We will meet at The Post Room Cafe at 10.45 am, leaving at 11.15 am {come out of Turnham Green station, turn right and walk just a few 100 yards and cross over Zebra Crossing.}
We will walk along a Common, a Green, and go to the Mosaic House, and also walk around the Gunnerbury Nature Reserve before we go to Chiswick House & Gardens {as image above}.
Lunch will be at the Cafe in Chiswick House & Gardens or bring your own.
After we come out of the Gardens we will go through a cemetery before reaching charming Old Chiswick by the Thames.
We embark on a long loop of the river familiar to fans of the Oxbridge Boat Race. Looking across to Barnes, Mortlake and Kew on the opposite bank, we find our way past meadows, sports fields and boathouses, a world away from the bustling streets earlier.
After a total walk of about 6 miles, our finishing point is an excellent multi-roomed pub by Kew Bridge, which has a spacious attractive garden if the weather is kind to us.
Next-door are Kew Bridge station and bus routes heading back to Turnham Green and beyond.
Please wear the correct footwear, as some of the paths can get muddy, but the walk is flat without no hills to climb.
£7 meet up fee required, {please have the right change}

Day trip by coach - a church, a battlefield & two towns in Northants! (only £27)
Come along on Saturday 4th July to visit a 9th century church, a 17th century battlefield and two pretty towns in the county of Northamptonshire!
**About the day**
Northamptonshire is a landlocked county in the east Midlands. Its quite rural, with lots of farmland and market towns. It also has lots of pretty little villages with stone cottages and thatched roofs. The county has enough local stone buildings to rival the Cotswolds.
**All Saints' Church, Brixworth**
Brixworth is a historic village, primarily famous for housing All Saints' Church, one of the oldest and largest surviving Anglo-Saxon buildings in the UK. The church dates from the 9th century and is built of local stone and Roman stone, taken from nearby abandoned Roman buildings.
**Naseby Battlefield**
On the 14th June 1645, one of the pivotal battles of the English Civil War took place here. The Battle of Naseby was where a relatively unknown cavalry commander in the Parliamentary Army, a man named Oliver Cromwell, changed the course of history and routed the Royalist armies under Prince Rupert.
**Oundle**
Oundle is a quintessential English market town that sits at a bridging point on the River Nene and amidst the rolling countryside. The town has a medieval street layout lined with 17th-century Jacobean and Georgian stone buildings. Today it has many cafes, pubs and independent shops.
**Uppingham**
Uppingham is a market town with lots of honey coloured buildings and with its art galleries it has become a popular destination for art lovers. It also has lots of independent shops, including lots of antique shops. A little over 1 mile from the town are the earthwork remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle.

STREATHAM....Guided walking tour
STREATHAM.......THE WEST END OF THE SUBURBS
What on earth can be interesting in what, in 2002, was voted the dullest and most congested high street in London. A straight line with lots of typical high street shops of today, fast foods, betting shops, a bingo hall and specialist shops for Caribbean’s, Asians, African and polish immigrants.
But peel away the Streatham of today and the Streatham of my youth, unfolds before you . The 1950’s and 60’s when Streatham was a very different place and a great area to live and grow up in. Streatham had more entertainment venues and luxury flats than any other area of London. My mission today is to bring alive those days and give you just a flavour of Streatham’s golden era.
I spent the first 22 years of my life in Streatham so I have first hand knowledge of what was a great place to have grown up in. Come and share with me memories of those great days. Streatham today is on the up but can it ever get back the glory days that once were ???
cost of walk is £15 cash on the day. phone or text me with any queries

Breathtaking Bloomsbury ... tour with Blue Badge guide Laurence
Photo above by emma.buckley (Creative Commons)
Join me for a walking tour of one of London's most eclectic areas. One of my favourite areas for walking around, it's got a truly peaceful aura to it and is crammed full of history and interesting characters.
Meet Goodge Street Underground Station @ 11am - 11.10
Fee £15
It may be American Independence Day but we're keeping it British this year!
This is a beautiful area, full of stories of household names - underrated and not to be missed!
Known not only for its literary connections, Bloomsbury also has links to the aristocracy, medicine and politics. Throw in glorious architecture and gorgeous garden squares and it makes for a feast for the senses. Where else would you find the Bloomsbury Group, Pre - Raphaelites, the inventor of Pfizer, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath , Mad George 3rd, not so mad George Orwell and TS Eliot and the story of the chocolate sauce and you have a mixed array of stories ...... And, oh yes, there's also the missing queen and a star of the Carry On films - arguably the most popular star of that series......................
We finish by Russell Square, close to a great pub and lots of cafes, where I, for one , will be partaking. Feel free to join me!
It is imperative that you let me know if you cant come as I will wait till 11.15 for anyone whose name is on the list and if they do not turn up it isn't fair on the group for them to hang around if those attending are all there and ready to go.
Please note that at traffic lights i will always wait for the green man signal- if there is one -and that at other crossings and on the streets generally attendees need to be vigilant.
Guided walk £15 - payable on the day

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for July is "Shoes"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Saturday Mornings @ East Market
Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating.
Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator.
Per what this group is about:
"Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who enjoy talking to people from other countries, and those who would like to discuss international travel and culture, and who enjoy getting together for good conversations."
