Coffee Club Special Edition: Morning Hike with *The Human Board*
This isn't your usual coffee club. Inspired by how great it is to grab a coffee with a cool... *mentor,* you will:
**WAIT WHAAAAATTTT?!?!!?**
Welcome to a **very special — and second! —** edition of Coffee Club Barcelona where we host members of [The Human Board](https://www.humanboard.org/) in person for meaningful and free conversations about *your* career growth.
**INVITATION: Saturday 28 March, 8:30am - 10:30am @ Plaça del Nen de la Rutlla, Parc del Guinardó, meet at the statue.**
The Human Board is a very different kind of "board of advisors" where wonderful, talented people get the professional mentorship-driven guidance that they need about their careers. Accomplished, cool, and kind board members, who are at the height of their varied industries, listen well and give free guidance to those who apply for meetings. The Human Board is a global initiative that is almost two years old and has inspired career growth, pivots, exits, changes, applications, affirmations, and more.
This special coffee club event coincides with a board member summit where we have core board members flying in from around the world to convene in Barcelona, so this is a very rare opportunity to enjoy a morning stroll and have a casual chat with truly the best people in business (leaders of some of the most renowned companies around the world) about your own career and what you'd like to do next - for free.
*Those who joined us for the first Human Board edition back in October know just how special this is — and we're so excited to do it again.*
Similar to the usual [Coffee Club Barcelona ](https://www.meetup.com/coffee-club-walk-talk-coffee-with-us-throughout-barcelona/)format we will:
* Meet up with high-quality, high-vibe people, *THIS TIME AT **Plaça del Nen de la Rutlla, Parc del Guinardó***
* Bring a coffee to go (bring your own tumbler/thermos if you'd like) or grab one at the end with us — we will end our hike at a cafe.
* Go for a long walk/hike with these people *OUR CONVERSATION STARTER FOR THIS EVENT IS "Tell me about your career?"* :) in nature
* Chat about life for a couple hours while on the move and enjoying the sights and sounds of Barcelona
* Experience that happy, buoyant feeling that comes from an engaging, pleasant chat
* Enjoy some of the best views of Barcelona and nature
* Continue on with the rest of your day
If you'd like, please provide a reason / intention for attending so that Jenna and The Human Board can make this great for you.
**INVITATION: Saturday 28 March, 8:30am - 10:30am @ Plaça del Nen de la Rutlla, Parc del Guinardó, meet at the statue.**
We will leave the statue for our walk together at 8:40am. Please be prompt and on time, we will not wait and don't want to miss you. x
Disclaimers:
This meetup is free, but logically you must purchase your own coffee or beverage of your choice directly with the coffee shop that we're heading to after. The primary language of this meetup will be English, the organizer Jenna also speaks Spanish for any questions or needs. For accessibility please note that we will be hiking up and down steep inclines and uneven terrain to arrive at the mirador del nen de la rutlla. In the event of rain we will message to establish a new indoors location. If you have a well-behaved dog and would like to walk your dog at the same time you are encouraged to bring them. Note that there will be no presentations, we will not be doing any 'talking at,' we'll all be talking with each other, in separate 1:1, 2-3:1 conversations, while hiking around the mountain. Note that while this meetup is in English, this is \*not an English language learning group - this is a way for incredible strangers (both locals and expat locals, we're about 50/50) to get together, chat, and connect about real topics - this time, about your career. If you'd like, please provide a reason / intention for attending so that Jenna can make this great for you. Jenna will be actively hosting this space so don't be surprised if she sends you out for a walk with a new stranger, or changes it up a bit to encourage connection. Note that Jenna is intentionally keeping this group free. Be sure to join our **The Club** Whatsapp group after attending one of our Coffee Clubs to be connected with all of our people in Barcelona - in a no-spam, no-sales, genuinely just cool people meeting up - kind of way. If you'd like to support and/or team up with Jenna, buy her a coffee, check out her work at [holajenna.com,](http://holajenna.com,/) or find her at the next coffee club and say the code word: kaleidoscope.
Who is shaping the experience of this group?
Jenna is a people person, and the founder of AMARIMA - a hot experience design consultancy crafting deeply resonant and immersive experiences that fuse multi-sensorial design, narrative-based hospitality, and behavioral design. She and her team work with some of the world's top hotel brands, experience-driven companies, and individuals to "turn up the dial on life." Among the many things she's done, she's traveled the world living out of a backpack, interviewed famous environmentalists in viral YouTube videos, written a book of travel stories that’s in bookstores across the US, hosted multiple podcasts, guest lectured in media and storytelling at top universities, and coached and mentored thousands of people who want to live deep and fulfilling lives. Jenna also founded and chairs the mentorship organization The Human Board. With her home in Barcelona and work happening in cities around the world, Jenna hosts Coffee Club Barcelona to bring together high-quality, high-vibe people, and foster real community. Coffee Connections
A casual (but coordinated) coffee break to meet new friends, take a Zoom break, and get your AM caffeine fix.
Stop by for a few minutes or stay the whole time. Bring a friend or wander in solo. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop!
Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs. Find more info on our Instagram (@backstorybookshop) or website (www.backstorybookshop.com).
The Hour of the Star by Clarice Linspector
Our first reading will be The Hour of the Star (1977), a short novel by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. With just 96 pages, it is an intense and powerful book by one of Brazil’s most beloved authors.
The novel follows Macabéa, a young woman living on the margins of society in Rio de Janeiro. Through an unusual and sometimes meta narrative voice, Lispector reflects on language, authorship, poverty, invisibility, and what it means to tell someone else’s story.
The discussion will be held in English, but you’re welcome to read the book in any language.
We’ll meet at Backstory Bookshop (downstairs), and after the discussion we’ll continue the evening with a casual get-together over coffee or drinks nearby, for anyone who feels like staying.
**[Please RSVP for the meeting here](https://www.backstorybookshop.com/event-details-registration/reading-women-book-club)!**

Book summary:
In 2006 Julia Lerner is living in Moscow, a recent university graduate in computer science, when she's recruited by Russia's largest intelligence agency. By 2018 she's in Silicon Valley as COO of Tangerine, one of America's most famous technology companies. In between her executive management (make offers to promising startups, crush them and copy their features if they refuse); self promotion (check out her latest op-ed in the WSJ, on Work/Life Balance 2.0); and work in gender equality (transfer the most annoying females from her team), she funnels intelligence back to the motherland. But now Russia's asking for more, and Julia's getting nervous. Alice Lu is a first generation Chinese American whose parents are delighted she's working at Tangerine (such a successful company!). Too bad she's slogging away in the lower echelons, recently dumped, and now sharing her expensive two-bedroom apartment with her cousin Cheri, a perennial "founder's girlfriend". One afternoon, while performing a server check, Alice discovers some unusual activity, and now she's burdened with two powerful but distressing suspicions: Tangerine's privacy settings aren't as rigorous as the company claims they are, and the person abusing this loophole might be Julia Lerner herself. The closer Alice gets to Julia, the more Julia questions her own loyalties. Russia may have placed her in the Valley, but she's the one who built her career; isn't she entitled to protect the lifestyle she's earned?

March Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our March read is **_The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver._**
The story follows Taylor Greer, a young woman from rural Kentucky who leaves home for the West, only to find herself unexpectedly becoming the guardian of an abused Native American toddler named Turtle. In Tucson, Arizona, they form a makeshift family with a diverse group of people, including Guatemalan refugees and a single mother, exploring themes of motherhood, community, belonging, and finding hope in hardship. The story blends humor with serious issues, creating a story about finding family in unexpected places.
Looking forward to discussing with everyone!
We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.**
Happy reading! 📖
