Scenic MTB Ride: Pfaffenthal → Wasserbillig + Train Return
We'll start from Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg train station (downstairs next to the bus stop "Pfaffenthal, Halte CFL Quai 1") and ride around 38 km on a mix of cycle paths, forest trails, and unpaved sections. Expect a group-friendly pace with regular breaks to enjoy the surroundings — no one gets left behind. 🚴 **Who’s it for?** Beginner & intermediate riders with basic off-road experience. You should be comfortable riding for \~3–4 hours on mixed terrain (including forest trails). 🚲 **Bike requirement (important)** This ride includes off-road and uneven terrain. Flesh by David Szalay
Flesh by David Szalay
**Attention**: Based on past no-shows, everyone will start on a waiting list by default. Once you confirm (in a comment or by PMing me) that you’ve actually read the book, I’ll move you to the “going” list. Thanks for understanding! I still remember quite vividly how, on November 11th, I opened the culture section of The Economist and read the following: «“Flesh” is a deceptively complex work which finds original ways to explore masculinity, intimacy, class divides and power struggles. When asked to sum up his book, Mr Szalay declared it was about “being a body in the world”. That body belongs to Istvan, and his world is a place in which he is a passive participant, unable to speak his mind or articulate his desires.» I bought the book immediately and was struck by how intensely I could resonate with it. Let’s see if it resonates with any of you, too!
European Day at Experience Europe
European Day at Experience Europe
Dear All, Let's celebrate Europe on the European Day! Experience Europe has a special event with guided tours etc. AND Food Trucks! So same procedure as last year ! We will be early hoping it will be less busy in the morning and learn more about Europe. Afterwards, we will sample check the quality of the food trucks. For those who have yet to visit the Experience Europe: It is quite well made. There are some "rabbit holes" where you start reading and loose sense of time. My first visit lasted 2h and ended with my stomach reminding me of lunchtime. Here the link: [https://www.europarl.europa.eu/europe-day/assets/pdfs/2026-luxembourg-europe-day-program_en.pdf](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/europe-day/assets/pdfs/2026-luxembourg-europe-day-program_en.pdf) See you on Saturday! Straussefest Contern (13km)
Straussefest Contern (13km)
Hello Friends! Jörg is always hungry, and we all want to go out for a nice walk. This weekend, we can kill 2 birds with one stone! There is an ostrich farm (Straußenfarm, ferme d'autruches) in Contern, and this weekend they are open to the public for the "Straussefest", Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. We're going to start in Contern near the "Hall Sportif" and do the "Guttland Trail Contern" with a little extension into the Dalheim forest. After around 8km we will stop for the lunch break, but don't eat too much, Jörg promised that there will be ostrich available at the finish line. At least some pâté and salami, I heard, and you can buy ostrich meat for your next barbecue. **Meeting Point:** We will meet at the "Hall Sportif" in Contern. There's a huge parking lot behind the building. https://maps.app.goo.gl/GQw9vQbzVfkBNHti6 **Public Transport:** You can take train RB 4810 towards "Wasserbillig", leaving "Gare Centrale" at 10.42, arriving in Sandweiler-Contern at 10:50. 5 minutes later you take Bus 324 towards "Kirchberg, Luxexpo" and exit in Contern at the stop "Kraizgaass" at 11:02. From there it is just 10 minutes walk towards "Syren", at the end of the town, on the right-hand side. **Car Pool:** If you come by car, you might offer a seat to a friendly co-hiker. https://groupcarpool.com/t/jmsd2t Passengers, please get into the cars of your favorite driver or place of departure, or on the waiting list if there's no free seat at the moment. Don't forget to remove yourself from the waiting list when you find a seat in a car! Disclaimer: The hike is at your own risk, and please make sure to wear proper shoes and bring some water for yourself! Looking forward to hiking with you! Jens. PS: We will not kill 2 birds; one stone would not be enough anyway. Do you have an idea about the size of these things?

Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you knew Del Close on a personal level, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup** for some fun and games! The idea behind improv is to create entire scenes from scratch based on a suggestion from the audience. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway*, *ComedySportz*, or *Wild 'n Out*; it could also be done to tell stories, like *Middleditch and Schwartz*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and free!) weekly comedy event, brings the games (and occasionally different forms) for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and make friendships that'll last a lifetime! Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "Yes, And" that you'll have fun!

Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches. * **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain acts—like lying—are wrong regardless of the consequences; you can’t do a wrong thing for a right reason. * **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are “higher” than others, and that good intentions don’t redeem harmful outcomes. ## Discussion Questions 1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie. 2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?** 3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome? 4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend? 5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles? 6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way? 7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time? 8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
