Tottenham Court Road Picture Hunt
**Meet at Warren Street tube outside exit.**
**"Tottenham Court Road**, a market road, or street, leading from Oxford Street to the prebendal manor of Tothill, Totenhall, or Totenham Court, described in Domesday, and originally appertaining to the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's. In 1560 the manor was demised to Queen Elizabeth for ninety-nine years, in the name of Sir Robert Dudley."
In 1639, twenty years before the expiration of Queen Elizabeth's term, a lease was granted to Charles I., in the name of Sir Henry Vane. In 1649, being seized as Crown land, the manor was sold to Ralph Harrison, Esq., of London, for the sum of £3318 : 3: 11. At the Restoration it reverted to the Crown; and in 1661 was granted by Charles II., for the term of forty-one years, in payment of a debt, to Sir Henry Wood.
The lease was next possessed by Isabella, Countess of Arlington, in the reign of Charles II., from whom it descended to her daughter, the Duchess of Grafton; and in this way was inherited by the family of the Fitzroys, Dukes of Grafton, descended from Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, the notorious mistress of Charles II."
This is another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. If any issues with weather, we’ll switch to our 50-50 Trivia in a nearby pub, so turn up as something will be on regardless.
If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check the previous weeks for winners and clue sheets.
This time, the event will be centred around different buildings, shops and features on a different side of Tottenham Court Rd to the previous one, so there’s no crossing of busy roads. This road is not touristy like Charing Cross Rd opposite.
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please.
As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them.
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point. To be confirmed.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers.
This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
**There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event. Pay on the day.**

FRENCH CONVERSATION (Rusty Intermediate) with a native tutor
***WARNING***

You want to improve your fluency, your pronunciation and your French skills? You want to get more vocabulary, knowledge and understanding of French, the French and France? You want to speak on various topics with the support of a French native tutor?
Each week, we come up to a different theme. It pushes your conversation skills up. It helps you to speak about many topics and to interact in French in multiple contexts.
Regular attendees learn a lot, make improvements and are able to have a chat about numerous topic!
The bonus, you will be able to ask questions to an authentic French native!
**THE CLASS:**
This is a face-to-face conversation class lasting 60 minutes run by a French native & professional tutor (in London since 2016).
This is a Conversation Class dedicated to French learners who struggle to have a spontaneous conversation. If you think your French is rusty, if you feel not really comfortable to interact among a group of other French speakers, this class is for you (if not sure, send a message in French to the organiser).
The class goes on an adapted pace with a first part dedicated to a chit-chat and then we'll focus on a short text to learn about French culture and the language.
We approach the theme, read a short text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions.
After the class, you will get an email with a list of vocabulary (some words / expressions seen along the class).
This is a very small group class: maximum of 4 attendees and a minimum of 2. So you will speak directly to the tutor.
During the class, the tutor helps you to structure and improve your phrasing, and to develop your understanding.

Sunday Asian Culture Social: Snacks, Chitchat & Board Games
**Whether you’re from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, or anywhere else across Asia — or you’re simply curious about Asian culture and looking to meet warm, interesting people — you are genuinely welcome here 🙋**
This is our regular Sunday gathering for anyone who enjoys Asian culture, food, languages, games, travel stories, and good company. Think of it as your Sunday ritual: a relaxed, welcoming space to slow down, connect, share a little of your world, and learn something new.
Each week has a light cultural focus, but the atmosphere stays easy and social. Some Sundays we explore Chinese names and Hanzi writing; other Sundays we play board games, practise languages, talk about food culture, share travel stories, or introduce tea, festivals, films, music, and everyday customs from across Asia.
🍱 **Bring your own snacks to share**
Snacks are not provided by the organiser, but you are warmly encouraged to bring a small snack to share — something from your culture, hometown, or simply something you enjoy. It’s one of the easiest ways to start a conversation.
*\*Loong Express also has food and drinks available to buy onsite. Since they kindly host our Sunday socials, we encourage everyone to support the venue by ordering a drink, tea, snack, or meal during the afternoon if you can.*
🗣️ **Language exchange**
Practise Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cantonese, English, or any language you’re learning in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. Native speakers and total beginners are all welcome.
🎲 **Board games & chitchat**
Unwind with tabletop games, party games, Mahjong, or simple social games. You don’t need to know the rules before you come.
💬 **Free-flow conversation**
Mingle, share stories, ask questions, make friends. No agenda, no performance — just a warm Sunday afternoon with curious people.
✍️ **Occasional cultural activities**
Depending on the week, we may also include a light activity such as Chinese names, Hanzi writing, tea culture, travel prep, food stories, or a short culture quiz.
**WhatsApp Community**
Join our WhatsApp group to chat with members, suggest future activities, and get weekly event updates:
[WhatsApp Community link](https://chat.whatsapp.com/KhKITDVOE0A21ytwHMsxfX?s=sh&p=i&ilr=4)

📍 Loong Express
104 Great Portland St

**A note on RSVP**
If your plans change, please cancel your spot in advance so someone else can join. Some weeks include an opening activity, so late arrivals may miss the first part, but you’re still welcome to join when you arrive.
**About the Host**
Hosted by London Chinese Culture Meetup, supported by [Nihao Serica](http://nihaoserica.com/) — building cultural connections between the UK and Asia.
While our meetup is focused on creating a warm local community in London, we’ll occasionally share China culture and travel notes for anyone curious about exploring Chinese cities, food, heritage, and local life.
Come join us this Sunday at Loong Express. We’d love to meet you 🌈🥟🀄🍵

[Pay What You Can for your 18:30 ticket through this link before RSVP](https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2026/event/project-a-black-planet-the-art-and-culture-of-panafrica)
***MEET BY THE EXHIBITION ENTRANCE/TICKET CHECK***
Explore the impact of Pan-Africanism on artistic and cultural production from the 1920s to the present, through over 300 works – from paintings and installations to posters, journals, and film.
The term Pan-Africanism refers to a broad spectrum of political and philosophical movements advocating anti-colonial resistance and transnational solidarity amongst peoples of African descent. While it has long been recognised as a galvanising force in 20th-century global history, Project a Black Planet is the first major exhibition to consider both its influence on visual art and culture, and the critical role of artists in shaping Pan-African visions.
Followed by social at the Barbican Centre.
