Board and card games at the CafĂŠ
WHAT we play. As you know, we have two events, one more for social games on Thursday and another for **strategic games** on **Monday**. Depending on what people bring, we may play brainy games, not limited to chess and classic games. So, feel free to bring other ones.
And this is only indicative. Some games like Decrypto fit both events, **and if people feel like playing a social game on Monday or a more strategic one on Thursday, they are free to do so.**
WHERE. Because we have many strategic players on Monday and these games take longer, we moved to a cafĂŠ closing much later than the previous one.
CHATBOX USE. In the event chatbox, you are invited to discuss the games you bring and want to play for this session. The idea is to gather people around game tables beforehand. Of course, it's also possible to show up and arrange this after the introduction round, which starts at 7h15.
HOST. If you want to become a host and have your board game event for a specific game with a small group of people or in another place, Great! Let me know, and I'll help you set up your event with this group. Hosts don't pay fees.
TIMING: Because strategy games are often longer, we start at 7 pm (instead of 8 pm on Thursdays). So, those who play long games can have 3 hours and 30 minutes for their game. You can come later, but you may have to wait before joining a game.
WHERE. We play upstairs. Ask which room at the bar downstairs.
DRINK. You have to order a drink at the bar, pay for it, and come up with it.
**PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT, UNFORTUNATELY, THE AUTOBUS ACCEPTS CASH ONLY.**
EVENT REGISTRATION.
Please register to allow us adequate venue planning.
IN CASE OF A WAITLIST. Please, out of respect for people on the waiting list, don't cancel later than 7 PM the day before so they can plan their evening correctly. If you are on the waiting list, please cancel your attendance if you change your mind and can no longer come.
Don't hesitate to send me a message to comment or make suggestions!
Take care and see you soon!

NEW TIME-- 6 PM!! Deep Conversation-- Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister CafĂŠ, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you!
After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations.
Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy:
What is a genuine friend?
Is social media turning us into emotional zombies?
Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them?
Are we driven by sex?
Is loneliness a personal failure?
Is morality relative?
**Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.
Trumpâs â3D Chessâ in Geopolitics: Strategy or Improvised Disruption?
**This weekâs session is a structured debate.**
The question is not whether you *like* Donald Trump.
The question is whether his geopolitical actions represent a coherent long-term strategic recalibration â or short-term transactional disruption.
We aim for analytical distance.
No cult energy. No Trump Derangement Syndrome.
We examine the **who**, **what, why, when, and how**:
* What concrete strategic shifts occurred under his policies?
* Why did he use tariffs, sanctions, NATO pressure, and bilateral deals as leverage?
* When does unpredictability strengthen negotiation?
* How did his approach change global alignments?
* Did he accelerate the shift from cooperation to competitive realism?
This debate welcomes different conclusions:
* Was this strategic chess?
* Was it destabilizing improvisation?
* Was it a transitional phase in a multipolar world?
* Did it expose fragilities in the liberal international order?
## **What Makes This Different**
We are not here for partisan tribalism.
**We welcome:**
* **Pro-Trump arguments**
* **Anti-Trump arguments**
* **Structural/system-level critiques**
We reject:
* Moral hysteria
* Slogan repetition
* Performative outrage
* Intellectual laziness
* TDS
This is not a space for ideological defense teams.
It is a space for stress-testing ideas.
No one will be shamed for defending or criticizing Trump.
Ideas will be challenged. Individuals will not.
## **Debate Principles**
* Speak from analysis, not emotion
* Bring facts, context, or comparative examples
* Distinguish personality from policy outcomes
* Argue ideas, not identities
Strong disagreement is expected.
Good faith is required.

What's up Friends! đ
Let's break the ice again! đ ! đ§â¨ This time let's try after work when the rink should be less busyđ¤
đ Time & place: Feel free to join at any time. For the ones who can make it at 18:30 we'll meet inside the Posseidon ice rink in the skate rental room.
âď¸ The idea: Skate as long as you like (rink closes at 10pm). For the ones who get tired (of falling) we can meet at the cafeteria around 19:30 to recharge with some drinks and snacks.
đ¤ Entry fee (cash or card):
13 EUR with skate rental
9 EUR if you bring your own skates
đââď¸ good to know:
Consider arriving 15 mins earlier - getting a ticket takes time when thereâs a line! âł
Bring a 50 cent coin for a locker if you need one (non-refundable)
Picture ID is required for skate rental.
Bring your handglovesđ§¤- you will need 'em!
More info: https://www.skate-poseidon.be/
â ď¸â ď¸â ď¸ Skating is fun, but safety comes first! When the rink is very crowded (Fridays, weekend) stay extra alert! Enjoy responsibly!

Data Pipelines at the Advanced Photon Source
**Abstract:** The Advanced Photon Source (APS) is an X-ray light source at Argonne National Laboratory where researchers perform imaging, diffraction and spectroscopy experiments at 68 specialized beamlines. APS recently completed a major upgrade that made it the brightest synchrotron in the world and upgraded many of the beamlines to take advantage of the dramatically brighter, more coherent beam. These new capabilities are increasing the facilityâs raw data production from <10 PB/year before the upgrade to >100 PB/year once all instruments are back online. To meet this data challenge, the APS Beamline Data Pipeline project team is partnering with beamline staff to develop and deploy science data pipelines that use a common set of open-source software tools (many written in Python) to link instruments with the Polaris supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) for data processing. This talk will describe the APS data systems, our file-based and streaming pipeline templates, and some of the open-source software we use to extract scientific insights from beamline data.
**Audience Takeaway:** Open source Python data acquisition and analysis tools are ubiquitous at the APS. Many of the packages that are mentioned can be found at [https://github.com/AdvancedPhotonSource](https://github.com/AdvancedPhotonSource).
This is a *hybrid* event. To attend online, join us on Zoom here at 6pm:

**Sponsor**: Grainger will provide the meeting site, as well as snacks for the onsite participants.
* **Address:** 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, 18th Floor, Chicago, IL 60654
* **Grainger's Overview:** W.W. Grainger, Inc., is a leading broadline distributor with over $17 billion in revenue. At Grainger, We Keep the World WorkingÂŽ by serving more than 4.5 million customers worldwide with maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) products and services delivered through innovative technology and deep customer relationships. Our machine learning team builds broadly across search, recommendations, product matching, computer vision, and generative AI.
* **Logistics**: To access the Grainger office, we require **first and last names** of those who RSVP'd by **Feb 11**. Please take the main elevators at the center of the Mart. Attendees will then present their **IDs** when they arrive at the front desk on the 18th floor.
Quarterly Community Gathering
Join the Columbus AI community for our quarterly gathering â a casual, community-focused evening where everyone has a chance to share, learn, and connect. These open micâstyle events give anyone in the community up to **5 minutes** to present a project, share a tool, pose a question, or offer a perspective on the evolving AI space.
No slides required â just a welcoming space to exchange ideas and keep the local AI conversation moving.
If youâd like to take the stage, message **Chris (the organizer)** with a **title and short description** of what youâd like to share.
Whether youâre deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
