Whoever Said Tokens Have to Be Characters?
Whoever Said Tokens Have to Be Characters?
Megaparsec is a well known Haskell parsing library, most often used to parse text. But a token stream doesn't have to be characters, it can be anything with the right instances. What if you fed it a stream of Aeson.Value instead? Extracting structured data from real-world formats is often a messy process. Presentation is optimized for human consumption, not for automated processing: What looks like a table is really a sequence of heterogeneous rows with little shared structure. JSON can serve as a useful interchange format in those cases, but parsing becomes much more complicated than matching keys to fields. Treating decoded JSON as a token stream and running Megaparsec over it gives you composability, meaningful errors, backtracking, and the full combinator toolkit. The talk is based on an hledger personal finance automation use-case, turning PDF invoice statements into hledger journal entries. This talk follows the [Zurich Friends of Haskell General Assembly](https://www.meetup.com/haskellerz/events/313322610/) that starts at 6pm in the same room, which all members are welcome to attend.

Workshop: Cycles of Care
Hi everyone, I would love to invite you to join us for the first workshop organized by my colleagues and me. It is supported by the University of Zurich and the Digital Society Initiative Community. **Cycles of Care** is a workshop series exploring how technology, health, and care intersect in women's lives. Digital women's health is growing fast, but many tools still don't fully consider how sex and gender shape our experiences. This series is all about opening up that conversation and bringing people together to think about how we can do better across research, design, and everyday practice. ✨ **Our 1st workshop is happening on March 26 at 16:30** **Theme:** *Considering Sex- and Gender-Specific Factors in Research and Practice* What to expect: * 🎤 Two inspiring talks from guest speakers * 💬 A hands-on, interactive activity * 🥂 A relaxed apero to chat, meet others, and exchange ideas This event is open to **everyone interested in digital women’s health** \- whether you're a researcher\, practitioner\, parent\, designer\, or just curious about the topic\. **Join online or in-person** (Please note: in-person spots are limited) 👉 More info and registration are here: [https://www.c4dhi.org/news/cycles-of-care/](https://www.c4dhi.org/news/cycles-of-care/) 💡 The event is free of charge Come by, meet like-minded people, and help shape more thoughtful, inclusive approaches to women's health and care. Swimming in the Limmat
Swimming in the Limmat
Hello dear Challengers, if you wish to join the Limmat swim and strengthen your body, join me to that swim. I will give you a short introduction on the "why" you should do it and then you will tell me if you want to do it. I am a trained lifeguard (SLRG), I did also the Hypothermia Module and I am swimming in the cold since 2015. Take with you all the necessary to swim, flip/flop, safe buoy (something like the orange donut here below, if you have it) and a Thermos. https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/a/7/5/600_466843637.jpeg See you there! Web Zurich March 2026
Web Zurich March 2026
Web Zurich presents inspiring talks all about the web. Join us for the March 2026 meetup! We will have three talks as well as chit-chat and drinks. Whatapp: [https://chat.whatsapp.com/FxOfVTK9nf431xHtVl3eGK](https://chat.whatsapp.com/FxOfVTK9nf431xHtVl3eGK) Website: [https://webzurich.ch](https://webzurich.ch) 18:30 \~ 19:00 Arrival time with drinks, chat and introduction 19:00 \~ 19:40 *Christian Heitzmann* **Why Documentation Won’t Write Itself—and AI Won’t Save You** For the last 15+ years, I’ve joined and consulted software teams that all struggled with the same problem: nobody likes writing documentation, and everybody pays the price for it. New developers spend weeks reverse-engineering codebases, architecture lives in people’s heads, and wikis quietly decay into noise. With AI now entering the picture, many hope it will fill the gaps. It won’t. I’ll show the simple ideas that change everything: how to think about documentation in the right levels, how to keep it close to the code, and how to avoid the decay we all know too well. These are the decisions that have to be made before any tool or process can work. The documentation won’t write itself. But there are ways to make it far easier and far more reliable. 19:40 \~ 19:50 **Short Break** 19:50 \~ 20:10 *Marco Gähler* **How to write good code** There is an infinite amount of solutions how you can solve a programming problem. Some are better, others are worse. The best solutions are easy to understand, maintain and errors are not able to hide. I wrote a book "Software Engineering Made Easy" about this topic and I'm more than happy to explain some principles that make your code better. Most of them are quite simple to understand, once you understand the mechanics, why your code always breaks. 20:10 \~ 20:30 *Marius Ishida* **AI: The Lightsaber Problem** My talk will challenge the popular narrative that AI fundamentally democratizes power by showing that, which I believe is not true at all. While generative AI lowers entry barriers for basic tasks, it disproportionately amplifies the productivity and leverage of already computer literate users. Empirical research shows that AI acts as a skill multiplier rather than a true equalizer, with outcomes strongly dependent on users’ ability to frame problems, verify outputs, and integrate tools into complex workflows. As a result, AI risks reinforcing a new AI driven digital divide, where technical literacy—not access alone—determines who truly benefits. 20:30 onward More drinks & chat We look forward to see you there! Filmbesprechung: "Man lernt nie aus" (The Intern)
Filmbesprechung: "Man lernt nie aus" (The Intern)
Join us for a live (private) session of **Mäng (offline in Zürich or online worldwide)**, a powerful self-exploration game that helps uncover hidden mental scripts and rewire the way you think, feel and act. Mäng is a modernized version of an ancient contemplative practice — reimagined as a transformational tool based on psychological insight, symbolic logic, and inner strategy. It is not therapy or coaching in the traditional sense. Instead, it’s an immersive deep-dive into the unconscious mind through metaphor and archetype with a game spirit. 💡 **How it works:** Mäng is built on four stages of real, lasting change: 1. **Discovery** – Identify limiting beliefs and internal programs 2. **Uninstallation** – Let go of outdated patterns 3. **Design** – Create new mental strategies 4. **Integration** – Embed them into your deeper awareness You’ll be guided through this process by the **Master of Mäng**, who offers structure, questions, and insight — while you remain the one making all decisions and discoveries. 🌿 **Who is this for?** * People feeling stuck or unsure of their next steps * Those tired of repeating the same emotional patterns and looking for inspiration and clarity * Anyone curious about deeper transformation without spending years on it 🧭 No prior experience needed — just bring your question or theme. 🕒 **Important:** This is a deep game. A full session lasts **4 hours**. Time slots are defined individually. Contact me directly to get an appointment. Price for newbies: 250 CHF

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively. This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way. **YouTube Link** TBA

CBusData: The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI
CBusData: The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI
The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI One does not simply build reports on OLTP data. Join us on an epic journey from the depths of raw, normalized tables to the shining halls of a well-modeled star schema fit for Power BI greatness. We will demystify the differences between OLTP and OLAP, walk through star schema vs snowflake (and why Power BI has a clear favorite), and show you the compression differences between normalized and columnar storage that will make you never look at an OLTP model the same way again. We will cover the different types of dimensions, when to use them, and how to handle Slowly Changing Dimensions without losing your mind. You will leave knowing exactly how to identify a bad model, how to convert OLTP data into a clean star schema, and how to forge relationships that rule them all. Whether you are a data wizard, a curious hobbit, or somewhere in between, your models will never be the same.
