Jonathan Watson, Bosun AI Strategies *\- A Thoughtful Perspective on the AI Boom: Misallocation Rather Than Bubble*
A recent macro analysis offers a measured view on the massive investments flowing into artificial intelligence. While acknowledging the genuine progress—strong revenues, rapid growth, and real demand—it suggests we may be witnessing not a classic speculative bubble, but a significant misallocation of capital that could limit AI's full potential.
Drawing from economics, physics, and observations of enterprise adoption, the piece highlights four structural challenges in the current approach to building AI infrastructure. These issues, if unaddressed, might temper some of the current optimism.
For those following AI's development, this perspective is shared in the spirit of constructive discussion. It may prompt useful questions about the path ahead and encourage a balanced view of the opportunities emerging in this fast-evolving field.
**Talk #2,**
John Wilder, Assistant Teaching Professor and Academic Lead of Applied AI MPS Assistant Teaching Professor at Northeastern University - *Comparing human and artificial neural networks*
In machine learning, a common way to measure differences is to find the difference between two vectors (L1 or L2 distance) or the angle between two vectors (cosine similarity). How can we compare systems that represent the same information in a different way? For example, when there is no feature correspondence between two vectors or even with the vectors are vastly different sizes, can we determine if they are representing information in a functionally similar way? I will present how I compared the human visual system to an artificial vision system, specifically a convolutional neural network (CNN).
Both the human visual system and CNN process visual input in stages. The goal of this work is to compare the stages of the different systems to one another, but there is no correspondence in the representations of the different stages or the different systems. For example, there are 125 million neurons in the retina alone, while VGG16 has 138 million neurons total. I will demonstrate how to use representational similarity analysis to allow for a comparison of these different representations. While I use this technique to compare the human brain to an artificial neural network, they are broadly applicable to comparing representations from any systems, such as different architectures of artificial neural networks.
**About the Speakers**
[Jonathan M. Watson](https://www.linkedin.com/in/watsonjon/) is a strategist and futurist focused on macro-economics, distributed systems, and infrastructure investment. His work examines how physical constraints—especially latency, energy, and scale—shape which technologies succeed and which capital cycles misfire.
Drawing on a background in global media systems and technology strategy, Watson studies the growing mismatch between hyperscaler investment models and the real requirements of edge and real-time compute. He writes and researches independently, sharing frameworks and lessons learned rather than predictions, with a perspective shaped as much by setbacks as by success.
[Dr. John Wilder](https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-wilder-309809207/) is the faculty lead for the applied AI program and an assistant teaching professor for the analytics program at College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University. He previously served as a lecturer for Northeastern’s Khoury College of Computer Science. John has a history of working on interdisciplinary research in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Computer Vision. His previous positions include a research associate at the University of Toronto and a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Vision Research at York University. John earned a PhD in Cognitive Psychology and an MS in Computer Science from Rutgers University. Outside of academia, he has worked as an independent developer of virtual reality software for optometrists. Other interests include board games, canoeing, camping, and reading.

**Event Details:**
* Location: CSI Spadina - 192 Spadina Ave., Toronto, ON M5T 2C2. Viola Desmond room on the 3rd floor
* Date and Time: January 21, 2026, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
* Topic: Lessons from Implementing MCP in Formulize.
**Location Note:** This meeting will be held in the Viola Desmond room on the 3rd floor. Access will be via the door to the stairs, not the usual main entrance to the basement area. We will send the building access code on the morning of the meetup, via email and chat.
**Session Topic:**
This session will be a retrospective and demo of how a full MCP server was added to Formulize ([https://formulize.org](https://formulize.org)). Formulize is 20+ year old open source project, and a web-based data management platform that both technical and non-technical people can use to rapidly create data-driven applications, and rapidly change them as requirements and needs evolve. Formulize is uniquely suited to AI, since all the business logic of every application is exposed through configuration which the AI can read via MCP tools.
*In this session we’ll look at:*
* The architectural requirements that MCP imposed
* The lessons learned in getting it working
* How to play nice with the AI for best results
* Future ideas for how MCP and AI could be even more integrated into people’s workflows
**Your Voice Matters:**

The Ethics of A.I. Companions
AI companions have become increasingly popular. A recent study estimates that around 70% of teens in the US has tried an AI companions in the past year. But is their impact on our lives overall positive? Can they provide true friendship or fulfill any of our social needs? With their popularity on the rise, what are the social and political implications they carry?
Come discuss these and other questions with us at the Centre for Ethics. Registration is free and everyone is welcome! Speakers Yiran Hua, Michael Inzlicht and Paul Bloom will discuss ethical questions surrounding AI companions.

**Abstract**
GitHub Copilot is rapidly changing how developers write, understand, and maintain code. Powered by generative AI and deeply integrated into modern development environments, Copilot acts as an intelligent coding assistant, helping developers move faster while maintaining quality and focus.
In this session, we’ll explore what GitHub Copilot is, how it works, and where it fits into a real-world developer workflow. We’ll break down what Copilot can (and cannot) do, where it can be used, and how licensing differs for individuals and organizations. Most importantly, this talk goes beyond theory with a live, hands-on demo showcasing Copilot inside the IDE and on GitHub, demonstrating how it can assist with code generation, refactoring, learning new APIs, and accelerating day-to-day development tasks.
Designed for developers, technical leads, and engineering managers, this session provides a practical introduction to AI-assisted development, highlights best practices for getting value from Copilot, and closes with guidance on how to continue learning and evolving alongside this rapidly advancing tool.
Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how GitHub Copilot can enhance productivity, improve developer experience, and fit into modern software teams today, not someday.

Software ate the world, Agents are eating Software Engineering
2026 may be the last year many developers write code by hand. We need coding agents to solve complex problems in production codebases, but vibe coding alone won’t get us there. Vibe coding is all gas, no brakes. It burns up the context window until the agent slips on its own slop. You can go fast at first, but the more you stuff into the context window, the more tangled its outputs get. While the industry is rapidly increasing code generation speed, we still have to understand, review, merge, and maintain what gets shipped.
This talk featuring Michael Geiger will outline how coding agents (Claude Code + Gas Town) work and a framework for orchestrating them to solve complicated problems in complex codebases. It’s about steering the model: doing the research to align intent, planning the approach up front, implementing in parallel steps, and breaking early. Human judgment still matters, but it should be spent on high-leverage decisions: what to build, what to forbid, and “what is quality?”, not cleaning up slop. Attendees will leave with a checklist to identify workflow and environment gaps that hold agents back, so you and your team can ship higher-quality software starting tomorrow.
