Join me on a new NVHC **GUIDED NATURE WALK** with Heidi Allen, a dedicated volunteer with Fairfax County Park Authority's Invasive Management program for the past 11 years. She has spent a decade caring for Fred Crabree, Deerlick, and Waples Mill Parks, helping to restore the health of our native habitats. She co-founded the NOVA Tree Rescuer program and spent several years coordinating volunteers to protect our tree canopy. We'll learn interesting facts from Heidi as we look for vernal pools, bellwort, wild azaleas, Christmas ferns, Virginia spring beauties, trout lilies, skunk cabbage and different varieties of club moss while walking along Little Difficult Run. Thanks to NVHC member/Crabtree volunteer Margaret Coffey for helping with this event. **DETAILS**: We'll do a 2 mile slow-paced guided loop with Heidi in Fred Crabree Park from 9:00-10:30. It is mostly flat, with a small hill. Trails are natural surface. Option for an additional 2.5-3 miles at a moderate pace on other trails within Crabtree Park. There is one stream crossing over large rocks in this second section. **LIMITED PARKING**: Please note that due to limited parking at Fred Crabtree Park and the preference of our nature guide for a smaller group, this hike will be limited in size. We will have open shop hours for anyone to bring their bikes to work on or need help fixing your own bike. We will also have bikes that need to be fixed so you can learn if you like. We will need everyone to sign in when arriving and sign out when leaving so we can keep track of volunteer hours and shop times. Suggested donation of $15 per hour for use of tools and space would be appreciated. Thank you!

This is an approximately 10 mile circuit hike with an elevation gain of about 2300 feet on Massanutten Mountain in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests. The hike is predominantly on the Massanutten (orange blazed) and Tuscarora (blue blazed) trails, and includes good views from Buzzard Rock Overlook, Fort Valley Overlook, and Signal Knob. We hike at an average pace of 2.8 mph while moving, slower on the uphill and faster on flat or downhill terrain. Join the RunDMV crew every Thursday night at **6:30pm** outside **Caboose Brewing Co.** in Vienna (520 Mill St. NE). We hit the W&OD Trail right behind the brewery for a **40-minute out-and-back run/walk**—go at your own pace, and when you hit 20 minutes, just turn around so we all finish together. No matter if you’re walking, jogging, or pushing the pace, you’ll have company out there. Each week we switch directions (east one week, west the next) to keep things fresh. After the run, we stick around for food and drinks at Caboose—because half the fun of run club is hanging out afterward. 🍻

This is NOT an official **Bike Rockville with RBAC** ride but a joint effort with our local Trek shop. Join the **Trek Rockville store** for a spring group ride in Poolesville and explore the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. You must be able to ride an average of 10 mph for 20-30 miles on moderate terrain. We will make an effort to stick together and regroup, but there is no sweep. This ride is a variation on the classic and well-traveled Arlington Loop, starting at Bluemont Park and riding clockwise. We will ride first on the W&OD trail and then make our way to the the Custis and Mount Vernon Trails along the Potomac River and past Reagan National Airport. We'll stop at Gravelly Point to watch a few take offs and landings, then lunch at Washington Sailing Marina. We get on the Four Mile Run Trail (not previously included in E-Bike Lovers rides) and then back to the W&OD trail and the start. We will pass Theodore Roosevelt Island (feel free to park your bike and walk the causeway; no bikes allowed.) There will also be ample DC skyline views. A highlight will be a stop at Gravelly Point, which affords a close-up view of planes landing at National Airport. We lunch at the Washington Sailing Marina, which features a marine convenience store with snacks and soft drinks and pizza. We'll also pass by the Weenie Beanie half smoke/hot dog stand -- an Arlington institution. The meeting place is Bluemont Park. There are multiple parking areas, so do not be fooled. We will meet at the parking area at 325 N Manchester St Arlington, VA 22203. (This is actually the address of the house directly next to the entrance to this parking lot.) Use the pin in the Location Map. Bring plenty of water and snacks or lunch. Don’t forget your bike lock if you plan to stop along the way! We will hike the famous Fairfax County Cross County Trail (CCT). We’ll depart from the Lake Audubon pool area and follow the CCT trail north for three miles and back three miles for a total of 6 miles. The route features a pleasant mix of dirt, gravel, and paved surfaces, with a few gentle hills—none exceeding 200 feet. Along the way, we’ll also enjoy a one-mile stretch of the W&OD Trail. After the hike, we’ll head to Lake Anne Brew House, an award-winning spot known for its small-batch beers and beautiful views overlooking Lake Anne. From Sycamore Landing, we e-bike on the C&O towpath to White's Ferry, where the group stops at the Potomac River for a picnic. The ferry has a restaurant known for its pickle burger. From the ferry, we return via River Road in Montgomery county's rustic farmland. The scenery is particularly fine everywhere along this 23-mile round trip. We will be biking in hilly terrain at the end of the trail. Most of the trail is flat. Whites Ferry is out of commission, but this doesn't affect the ride as we will not cross the Potomac. We meet at 10:00 a.m. at Sycamore Landing. We leave at 10:15 AM. See the map above for the ride route and directions to reach the parking lot at Sycamore landing. The Meetup map guides you to the Sycamore Landing parking lot as well. **Nota Bene: By car, the turn from River Road is 16 miles from the I 495 Beltway, and the parking lot is all the way down this dirt road next to the canal towpath.** The scenery is particularly fine everywhere along this 23-mile round trip. The riding surface beside the C&O canal is typically packed clay/gravel except near Whites Ferry, where it has been reworked into a smoother path. The route through the Montgomery Agricultural Preserve is a seldom-traveled road of packed gravel similar to the towpath's surfaces. Lunch: Brown bag at picnic tables overlooking the Jubal Early car ferry. Snacks and sandwiches are available at the adjacent store. The group stops a few times for slower riders to catch up. About the C&O Canal: The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated from 1831 until 1924 along the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. The canal's principal cargo was coal from the Allegheny Mountains. The canal’s roots begin with George Washington’s dream of a waterway trade route. 74 locks were built. About White's Ferry: Historic White's Ferry is the last of 100 ferries that used to operate on the Potomac River. This ferry, named after the confederate Civil War General Jubal A. Early, connects Whites Ferry Road in Montgomery County, Maryland with a road by the same name in Loudoun County, Virginia. The cars line up on what looks like a boat ramp and drive down onto the ferry. Once loaded, the ferry follows a wire cable to the other side of the Potomac.
