Ditch The Small Talk
Ditch The Small Talk
**Tired of surface-level conversations?** Join us for *Ditch the Small Talk*—an evening of deep, real connection with strangers who are down to go there. We’ll meet in the grass in front of the cathedral, break into small groups, and draw questions from a deck of cards designed to spark vulnerable, honest conversations. How it works: Draw a card and ask a question. Listen. Don't coach or give advice without permission. Try to ask follow-up questions when people share. You can spend 1 minute on a question or 1 hour, just go with the flow. **If you show up late, please don't interrupt the speaker. Just sit down in a group of your choice and they'll bring you up to speed when whoever is talking finishes. Bring a blanket or chair if you don't want to sit in the grass. *** Rules*** 1. Don't debate politics 2. Keep what is shared in the group within the group 3. If you need to use your phone, step away from your group first
⚡️ Side Projects and Networking: DSDC Meetup
⚡️ Side Projects and Networking: DSDC Meetup
RVSP on Luma!: https://luma.com/thq3hut1 Join us for an evening of data science side projects and networking! Come hear lightning talks about what people are building, meet other people working on cool stuff, and hang out. Whether you're deep into a side project, just getting started on one, or curious about what other people are working on, this is a good place to be. Side projects are how a lot of us learn new tools, explore ideas, and connect with people—and they're a lot more fun when you have other people to talk to about them. The speakers tonight are folks who have been participating in our side project mentorship program since March. They submitted side projects they wanted to work on, got matched with mentors, and spent 12 weeks working on them. They'll be talking to you about some aspect of what they did or learned. **Schedule** * 6:00 - 6:30PM: Mingling & food & drinks * Lightning Talks! * **Bryan Johns** — "Floodlines: The Geography of Institutional Memory" **Karen Zhu** — "Historic Recipe Explorer: Bringing Historic Cookbooks to Life with AI" **Aaron Schumacher** — "Pave the Planet: A new data visualization technique" * We'll add more as they come in. Speakers! TBA, but I'll add them as they come in!

\-\-\-\-\-\- [REGISTER FOR THE EVENT HERE (ON LUMA)!](https://luma.com/h4938tvr) \-\-\-\-\-\- Join us for an evening of collaborative problem-solving as we work on a variety of civic tech projects together. Project needs vary but often include brainstorming, researching, writing, coding, or analyzing data. Check out [our website](https://www.civictechdc.org/projects) for a list of projects which may make an appearance! Meet other civic tech enthusiasts. Learn new skills. Contribute to a project to improve a local civic issue. **All are welcome and collaboration is encouraged.** Laptops are recommended but not required. **Where do I register?** To better serve our growing community, we’re transitioning our event registrations to [Luma](https://luma.com/civic-tech-dc)! **We still love Meetup** Meetup has been an incredible platform for us to build and connect with our community. We’ll continue sharing upcoming events there so that new people can find us, but [Luma](https://luma.com/civic-tech-dc) will be our primary registration platform moving forward. **Why we're making the switch** Meetup’s registration system has some limitations, and we need more flexibility to manage sign-ups and engagement. \-\-\-\-\-\- [REGISTER FOR THE EVENT HERE (ON LUMA)!](https://luma.com/h4938tvr) \-\-\-\-\-\-
VSDC LGBTQ+ Film & Fun
VSDC LGBTQ+ Film & Fun
Summer is outdoor film season in DC, so let's take advantage of a free flick while having some fun near the water hanging with fellow LGBTQ+ vegan or veg-curious folks. The Wharf's [Sunset Cinema ](https://www.wharfdc.com/sunsetcinema/)will be showing the 2007 film *Hairspray*, which was directed/choreographed by Adam Shankman, who identifies as LGBTQ+. It also features John Travolta in drag. While it's a fun musical, the spirit of the film is centered around acceptance of all people, and that's definitely something we need more of in our country! Folding chairs and blankets are allowed (and encouraged, as other seating is very limited). In the event of rain, the Wharf may cancel the showing. In that instance this event will be also cancelled and the host will post an important comment to alert people that it won't proceed. **When:** Wed. June 10 at 7pm, to provide some time to chat (film starts at 7:30). **Location:** The film will be shown at the Wharf's Transit Pier ([970 Wharf Street SW](https://maps.app.goo.gl/RsMaFth9br8LDN8FA)). The event host will get there early and try to hold as much space as possible and will update the group with a comment regarding her specific location so it will be easier to find her. **Transportation:** The Wharf is near both the [Waterfront ](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/waterfront.cfm)and [L'Enfant Plaza](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/lenfant-plaza.cfm) metro stops. (See the [Wharf website ](https://www.wharfdc.com/getting-here/)for more details on getting to the venue.) **Cost:** Free ***About the Group*** *Unless noted otherwise, VSDC's LGBTQ+ events are intended for queer/questioning folks who self-identify as LGBTQ+. The events are meant to serve as a safe space to share community with other self-identified queer or questioning LGBTQ+ vegan or vegan-curious people. However, we appreciate our allies and we plan to host "LGBTQ+ & ALLIES" events approximately quarterly - to welcome non-queer allies into our events in order to share community with our fellow vegans/veg curious VSDC participants. If the event is an "& ALLIES" event, it will be clearly identified as such in the name of the event. Any person who participates in an "& ALLIES" event must be supportive of LGBTQ+ persons, their lifestyle, and their gender expression; unsupportive or combative individuals will be removed from events and banned from future VSDC LGBTQ+ events. Please note that any and all questions related to gender/LGBTQ+ issues that may arise during either LGBTQ+ or LGBTQ+ & ALLIES events must be posed ONLY to event host, Susan, and not be asked of any other meetup participants in order to respect their privacy and promote their personal safety.* **Update Your RSVP** Please change your RSVP if you can no longer make it. **VSDC: More Than A Meetup** We are delighted to have you as part of The Veg Society of DC Vegan Meetup group, and we look forward to seeing you at our events. Did you know that [VSDC](https://vsdc.org/%20) is a nonprofit organization with membership benefits? DIY Hours at Del Ray Shop
DIY Hours at Del Ray Shop
This is an opportunity for volunteers to support a professional mechanic as he guides customers working on their own bikes. If you know how to do some basic repairs, that's a plus, but even if you don't, you can greet customers and manage who gets helped next. Feel free to attend for only a portion of the time if you can't be there the whole three hours. Please note that this event is not usually an opportunity to learn about bicycle repair, since the mechanic tends to be very busy helping customers, especially during the warmer months. But it's a great way to contribute to Velocity, since almost all the funding for the volunteer program comes from the work done at the shops.

Find a Cofounder, Help or Join a Startup
**Welcome to Startup Oasis!** If you are a startup founder, investor, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, or anyone else in the tech ecosystem looking to start, join, or help a tech startup, this event is for you! Startup founders pitch their business to the audience, then they will join their own breakout group to get feedback from the attendees (similar to a hackathon). The official registration page is [here](https://luma.com/8f94woli). Schedule: * 6:00 PM - Doors open for networking * 6:45 - Founders pitch * 7:00 onward - founders break off into break-out groups and attendees can move around and help one for the remainder of the time, similar to a hackathon. Startup Oasis was created to pierce the illusion of accessibility of startups and tech by creating a grassroots forum for early-stage founders to pitch to those in the tech ecosystem to get real-time feedback for their idea or business. Use this [link](https://lnk.bio/startup.oasis) to: * Follow us on LinkedIn * Join our community * Donate to our cause * Visit our website * Sign up for our events newsletter **FAQ:** **Is this event free to attend?** Yes - Startup Oasis will always be free for anyone to attend. If you would like to donate, you can buy a VIP ticket here and it will be appreciated! You can also talk to us about volunteer opportunities. **Am I eligible to pitch?** You must be the founder or on the leadership team of a technology-based startup to be eligible to pitch. You can be early stage (pre-funding, pre-revenue, or pre-MVP) up to series A. Consultants, firms, and agencies cannot pitch their services - please join a breakout to speak with the founders. **What happens after the pitches?** The breakout groups form for the remainder of the event. Each founder gets a breakout room and you can talk with them more there about their business and needs. **Can I take photos or videos?** Yes, please be respectful when doing so. You can tag Startup Oasis on LinkedIn. If you have a video or YouTube show, you are welcome to interview founders and attendees.

Very few books are absolute must-reads. This is one.”―Siddhartha Mukherjee, assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and author of The Gene: An Intimate History "During the 25 years I have known Jamie Metzl, he has always been ahead of the curve. There is no one better to help us understand and prepare for the fast-approaching technological revolutions. Superconvergence is brilliant. I can't recommend it more strongly."―Sanjay Gupta MD, bestseller author, neurosurgeon, and Emmy-award winning chief medical correspondent (CNN) "Our world is defined by our science and technology—whether we like it or not. The question now is not whether to use these powers, but how best to use them. In Superconvergence, Jamie Metzl takes us on a journey through the new capabilities that are radically transforming ecosystems inside us and around us, challenging each of us to get personally involved with building the future we want."―Beth Shapiro, University of California Santa Cruz evolutionary biologist and author of Life as We Made It: How 50,000 Years of Human Innovation Refined―and Redefined―Nature "In a fine counter-blast to the pessimism of today, Jamie Metzl lays out just how spectacular the future of humanity and planet can be if we harness innovation responsibly and imaginatively to create what he calls the 'spiral of progress.'"―Matt Ridley, author of How Innovation Works, and co-author of Viral: The search for the Origin of Covid-19 “A page-turning journey through space and time that shows us how our lives will be changed by imminent technological advances we once only dreamed of.”―David Sinclair, Professor of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, and author of Lifespan: Why We Age―and Why We Don't Have To “The superconvergence of the genetics, biotechnology, and AI revolutions provides spectacular opportunities for building a better world. It also represents an almost limitless investment opportunity. We were excited to collaborate with Jamie Metzl, one of the world's great experts on how these aspirations can best be realized, including in capital markets. Superconvergence is a master class for imagining, investing in, and building a future we'd like to inhabit."―Jeremy Schwartz, Global Chief Investment Officer, WisdomTree “A clear examination of a transitional moment in the story of life on Earth…. Metzl capably describes recent developments in genetics and biotech and looks at how AI is providing an analytical engine of unprecedented power…. An important book in which the author sets out a path for the future based on his experience and expertise.”―Kirkus “Erudite, optimistic, and timely.”―Science Magazine "[In Superconvergence] Mr. Metzl has identified an important truth: that the convergence of new technologies is galvanizing us to reimagine how to meet urgent challenges in medicine and the environment. It’s a compelling opportunity—provided we manage to sidestep self-induced catastrophes along the way."―The Wall Street Journal ### About the Author Jamie Metzl is a leading technology and healthcare futurist and the founder and chair of OneShared.World. He is the author of Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity and four other books and was a member of the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on human genome editing. We Built an AI Platform Using AI — Here's What We Learned
A small team of AWS Solutions Architects not traditional software engineers, built AIRE Traffic Control (ATC), a production agentic AI platform now serving thousands of builders. We used AI at every stage: spec-driven development, AI-generated code, automated testing, and agentic workflows. In this talk, we'll share the real story, the architecture, the failures, the breakthroughs, and what we learned about driving adoption from 32% to 92% in 10 weeks. You'll walk away with practical patterns for building multi-agent systems, using AI-DLC methodology, and empowering non-traditional dev teams to ship production-grade applications.

Meet us for an Egyptian lunch at Fava Pot Falls Church
Let's enjoy a delicious Egyptian lunch! From the beginning, Fava Pot kept their eyes on the prize: serving the best of healthy, home-style Egyptian cuisine in an atmosphere that would make their customers feel like they were amongst a family. They do this by sourcing high-quality ingredients to cook their authentic meals. That means serving locally sourced foods such as chicken and game hens that are antibiotic-free and succulent meats that are grass-fed. And they also offer what more and more of our customers were asking for: delicious vegetarian and gluten-free options. Their motto has always been Eat Healthy for a Good Cause -through every purchase you make, they give back to Egyptian orphans in need. There is lots of free parking!

The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge. **Abstract** *Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code* Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs. In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling. The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options. **YouTube Link** TBD

No pressure and no experience required—just an interest in learning and building.
