Profs & Pints DC: Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âPsychedelic-Assisted Therapy,â** on findings, debates and trends in the use of psychedelic substances to treat trauma and other conditions, with Whitney Marris, instructor at the University of Buffaloâs School of Social Work, certified psychedelic-assisted therapy facilitator, and consultant to clinical trials.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-psychedelic-assisted-therapy](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-psychedelic-assisted-therapy) .]
Psychedelics are rapidly moving from the margins into the mainstream, and questions abound as the sociocultural and legal landscapes surrounding them shift. President Trumpâs recent executive order expanding access to psychedelic drugs for certain conditions and accelerating research on them has both heightened interest and added to confusion.
Learn more about the so-called âPsychedelic Renaissance,â and get help separating the hope from the hype surrounding it, with Whitney Marris, a leading trainer and facilitator of psychedelic therapy who has used it to treat trauma survivors, military veterans, and people with cancer.
Sheâll present foundational information on what we know about how psychedelics work. Youâll learn how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs from âtrip sittingâ and about what we know about the effects of âmicrodosingâ versus âmacrodosing.â Weâll examine what has been demonstrated to be helpful versus harmful before, during, and after a dosing session intended to support significant, sustainable change.
Marris also will discuss the historical and cultural context of the use of psychedelic medicines for healing, and sheâll describe the ethical challenges that arise as such practices move from counterculture to clinic. Weâll look at emerging and evolving findings in the field, as well as at the roles being played by various financial interests and ideologies in determining the direction of psychedelic-assisted therapy and research on its outcomes.
Attendees will gain an awareness of the need for new professional standards and regulatory guardrails related to such work, and theyâll leave knowing key questions to ask potential providers of psychedelic-assisted therapy. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

2-Day Backpack - Caledon State Park (13.5 Miles) + Pancho Villa
Caledon State Park is a 2,500-acre property in King George County that has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. The park includes 16 miles of hiking trails and is home to old growth forests and American bald eagles. Given the low mileage and modest elevation gain, this backpacking trip is a great choice for those who are new to the sport or who are trying to get back into it.
We will meet on the sidewalk between the parking garage and the bus lane at the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station at 9:00 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Please post a comment below if you are willing to drive. Carpooling saves the environment and makes friends.
## Trail Facts
* **Difficulty Level:** Easy
* **Length:** 13.5 Miles
* **Duration:** 2 Days
* **Elevation Gain:** 702 Feet
* **Bear Canisters:** Not Required
* **Permits:** Not required, although I ask that each person chips in $10 to help cover the cost of the camping reservation. You can give me cash or send me money via PayPal or Venmo.
* **Dogs:** Allowed on leash at the park, but not at the post-trip meal location.
* **Parking:** Franconia-Springfield Metro Station (Free garage parking is available if you aren't driving to the trailhead.)
* **Trailhead Coordinates:** 38.33376579936516, -77.14297900500688
* **AllTrails Maps:** [Day 1, Part 1](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/caledon-state-park-nova-tb-sat-1-f2fb9d7?u=i&sh=kucj8c) / [Day 1, Part 2](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/caledon-state-park-nova-tb-sat-2-8f2f470?u=i&sh=kucj8c) / [Day 2](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/caledon-state-park-nova-tb-sun-b016935?u=i&sh=kucj8c)
**Trail Details:**
**Day 1, Part 1:** After arriving at the park we will put on our packs and hike about 7 miles with 456 feet of elevation gain. During this leg of our journey we will stop by a few overlooks of the Potomac River and, if we're lucky, we may see some bald eagles. This loop will take us back to the Visitor Center, where you'll have the opportunity to top off your water supplies and check out the exhibits while JuanatĂĄn checks in on behalf of the group. You should be prepared to carry enough water to last you until we get back to our cars on Sunday, as there is no potable water near our campsite.
**Day 1, Part 2:** Once the group is ready we'll hike another 3.5 miles with 75 feet of elevation gain to our camping location near the Potomac River and Jones Pond. I have reserved six camping sites, with two tents allowed per site. We will set up camp, eat dinner, and relax around the fire as we wind down for the day. There will likely be a lot of free time, so consider bringing games or some other form of entertainment.
**Day 2**: While during many backpacking trips it is helpful to start early the second day, on this trip we can take our time in the morning as we wake up, eat breakfast, and pack. I still anticipate that we'll be able to depart our camping spot by 10:00 a.m. and hike a slightly different route of 3 miles with 171 feet of elevation gain back to our cars.
I plan to stop at Pancho Villa in Stafford on the way home -- the address is 155 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford, VA 22554.

Ditch The Small Talk
**Tired of surface-level conversations?**
Join us for *Ditch the Small Talk*âan evening of deep, real connection with strangers who are down to go there.
Weâll meet in the grass in front of the cathedral, break into small groups, and draw questions from a deck of cards designed to spark vulnerable, honest conversations.
How it works:
Draw a card and ask a question.
Listen. Don't coach or give advice without permission.
Try to ask follow-up questions when people share.
You can spend 1 minute on a question or 1 hour, just go with the flow.
**If you show up late, please don't interrupt the speaker. Just sit down in a group of your choice and they'll bring you up to speed when whoever is talking finishes.
Bring a blanket or chair if you don't want to sit in the grass.
*** Rules***
1. Don't debate politics
2. Keep what is shared in the group within the group
3. If you need to use your phone, step away from your group first
The Election of Barack Obama: Black Misleadership & DCâS Political Future
Barack Obama's election was celebrated as a historic milestone for Black political representation, but it also helped create the illusion that symbolic inclusion within existing institutions would lead to meaningful change and even liberation for Black communities. The elevation of Black political leaders often obscures the continued realities of economic inequality, displacement, state violence, and political powerlessness facing Black people.
This [Assata Shakur Popular Education (ASPE)](https://pacapower.org/our-work/programs/assg/ "https://pacapower.org/our-work/programs/assg/") session will reflect on the promises and legacy of the Obama presidency, examining its contradictions while considering its impact on political consciousness, Black leadership, and popular understandings of progress. Together, we will discuss why genuine democracy requires more than representation and how community control can serve as the foundation for DC's political future.
*Food will be provided!*
The ASPE are hybrid sessions with the option to participate via Zoom. **To join via Zoom use this link [https://tinyurl.com/africansstudy](https://tinyurl.com/africansstudy "https://tinyurl.com/africansstudy")**

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Finding Product Insights
**The Behavior Gap: Where Products Win or Lose**
Teams today have more data than ever, and yet many still struggle to understand why customers adopt, engage with, or abandon their products. Teams sprint, ship faster, and chase more signals⌠all while metrics stall and confidence drops. The missing piece isnât more data. Itâs often the behavioral insight between the metrics, explaining why the numbers move in the first place. Dashboards can tell you what customers did, but understanding why they did it (and how to influence what they do next) requires a deeper blend of insights. This session is about closing that gap.
Drawing from real-world experience designing and scaling products as [ZoCo Design](https://zocodesign.com/)âs CEO, [Lacey](https://www.linkedin.com/in/laceypicazo/) will share how to cut through the noise and identify the insights that actually change behaviorâmoving people, and moving metrics. Youâll learn:
* Why understanding customer behavior is a quant and qual challenge
* How to spot the signals that actually predict behavior change
* Where AI accelerates insight, and where it creates distraction
* How to get meaningfully closer to customers, without adding more tools
This talk reframes how to evaluate performance and identify what levers actually improve it, helping your team to make smarter bets with greater confidence. Every meaningful outcome is driven by behavior change. And when you know how to design for behavior, you stop guessing, and start building things that work.
**About Our Speaker**
[Lacey Picazo](https://www.linkedin.com/in/laceypicazo/) is the Founder and CEO of ZoCo, a healthcare product studio that turns complex, high-stakes ideas into products that drive real-world adoption. She partners with healthcare organizations to uncover critical care delivery insights, focus product strategy through behavior design, and build solutions that patients and providers actually use.

Battle of the personal agents
Join the Columbus AI community for a special event.
**Battle of the Personal Agents** is your chance to see what people are actually building with AI agents and personal automation systems. Whether youâre running OpenClaw, Hermes, or a completely custom solution, bring your agent and show the community how it works.
Weâre interested in real-world implementations: the problems your agent solves, how you use it day-to-day, how itâs hosted and managed, how you built it, and why youâve chosen to keep using it. Live demonstrations are encouraged, so be prepared to show your code, architecture, workflows, and your agent performing real tasks.
This is less about polished presentations and more about sharing practical experience, comparing approaches, and learning from one another. If youâd like to present, please contact Chris Slee (via meetup) before the event so we can allocate enough time for everyoneâs demonstrations.
Come ready to show what youâve built, discover what others are doing, and maybe find a few ideas worth taking home.
Whether youâre deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
