Come and join us for a 7.5 km hike along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in Utrecht on Saturday 10th of January! Starting and ending at Utrecht Leidsche Rijn train station, we will be walking a pretty straightforward route along the water, passing points of interest like the Douwe Egberts coffee factory, Sportpark Marco van Basten, the Daphne Schippers bridge and a mini Dom Tower. After the walk there's the option to go for a lunch together. Do you think about joining, but you're not sure if it's something for you? Let us explain. Utrecht Hiking Community aims to organise one hike per month in or around Utrecht. If you're in for a hike with a bunch of friendly other hiking enthusiasts, you're very welcome to join, no matter whether you're an expat, local, nomad, student, professional, beginner, alone or with friends. There is no public toilet at Utrecht Leidsche Rijn train station, so please visit a restroom before arriving. For those coming by car we recommend to either use the parking garage at Brusselplein (first two hours are free, after that it's €2.50 per hour), or park the car at the Laurierweg (free parking at about 5 minutes walking distance). Parking on the street closer to the train station costs €5.34 per hour. Participation in the hike is free of charge. **Hi Everyone!** **Details:** This is the only Shrinky Dink workshop experience in Amsterdam! Shrinky dinks is an art form that uses sheets of special plastic that shrink and contract when they are heated. The sheets can be drawn on and coloured with marker pens and cut with scissors. When they are heated they shrink into cute little charms that can be made into key chains, earings, lapel pin badges and fridge magnet. These were really popularity in the 1980s but they are currently making a come back! Draw you favourite cartoon character or picture on the plastic and then shrink it. Cover it in UV resin to dry and then attaché them to earring badges pins and keychains! Make beautiful and unique gifts for your loved ones. (Click on this Meetup's Photo Gallery to see more pictures). **Date:** The workshops are on the second Sunday of every month at 1:15pm. **Workshop Description:** The workshop is 2-3 hours All equipment, materials and instructions is included. It is a good idea to have an idea about what character you would like to draw and make into a shrinky dink. Maybe Hello Kitty? Cinnamoroll? Buzz Lightyear? Pikachu? Lilo & Stitch? Once you have decided what you want to draw, print it out or save a picture to your smartphone or tablet and bring it to the workshop. If you can’t decide, we have a mini library of books teaching you how to draw cute / kawaii animals and popular cartoon characters that you can use for inspiration. We also have a selection of pre-printed templates of popular characters you can use to trace. The workshop will start with an introduction and will cover the following topic. 1\. **History** The Columbus Museum of Art traces its roots to 1878, when it was founded as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, becoming the first art museum chartered in Ohio. A group of civic leaders established it to bring touring exhibitions and build a public collection. In 1887, it merged with the Columbus Art School (now CCAD) fostering a long partnership in arts education. This parking has normally been $7, unless you buy something either in the Museum's gift shop or café, in which case it's $5 (you have to bring your receipt to the Museum's front desk to get this discount). However, the Museum is currently in the process of upgrading their parking lot's intercom (or some such), and until such time as this is completed, parking in this lot is free. Once this upgrade is complete, though, the charge is likely to increase from $7 to $10. This upgrade is supposed to be done by the time we run this event, but given how these things work, I wouldn't be totally surprised if it's not complete by then. You'll know the lot is free if the gate arms to both the entrance and exit are fixed in a raised position when you arrive. However, there's a large parking lot for Safe Auto on the other side of N Washington Ave, between Boone St and Hutton Pl. The bigger issue may be the weather. The brewery has a good-sized outdoor patio that is covered and heated in the winter. However, that doesn't mean this patio will be warm. The inside of the brewery is "okay-sized," but again, the brewery is popular and by the time we get there, we may have no choice but to sit outside. If it's cold, I can and will ask them to fire up some of their additional outdoor heaters, which I think should be enough, but please bring something to keep you warm just in case we end up outside. Finally, while food at the Biergarten can be a little overpriced, in my experience it is excellent, and you are likely to enjoy whatever you get. We should be there by 1:00 if you can't make the Museum and just want to meet us for drinks.

The topic for January is "Chemistry" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human.
